  • The DIRTIEST word in rowing, especially when it comes to teaching and learning the rowing stroke, is “CONTROL.” Your rowing stroke should never be thought of in terms of control, especially when it comes to the recovery portion of the rowing stroke. Instead, the recovery of the rowing stroke should have a certain freedom to it, with long effortless float into the front end. The rowing stroke, specifically the recovery is about timing. I cringe when I hear a coach on UA-cam, Instagram, or even in person refer to ANY portion of the rowing stroke as one that requires control. Control = Effort. So why, on the RECOVERY (it’s called that for a reason) would you want to control your motion. Rowing is a light switch. Turn it on during the drive, turn it off on the recovery. This will lead to greater durability and efficiency in your rowing stroke, over any distance.
