  • The time has come to try out the original Canon EOS 5D from 2005! Over the years it has become a legendary camera and is also known as the "5D Classic", because it is the first in a long line of 5D cameras. In this video I will go through why it is still a fantastic camera in the year 2024!

My favorite Canon EF lens for the 5D is the EF 85mm F1.8 USM. The size / weight of that lens on the 5D body is absolutely perfect, feels incredibly natural. Focuses super fast, sharp images, and a beautiful rendering that makes the shots look as if they were sketched by an artist. (Versus the hyper-real rendering of the L lenses, or the Leica-look of the Sigma ART). My absolute favorite (non-Canon) EF lens is the Sigma ART 35mm F1.4. Razor sharp, and not just the center point is sharp but all focus points work with this lens, even at F1.4! It practically gives the 5D night vision (compared to F1.8 lenses). It's not just that it can capture more light, but has a fraction of the high ISO noise, its ISO 3200 shots are way cleaner, sharper and significantly lower noise than the ISO1600 shots with the Canon F1.8 EF lenses. Also, it focuses super fast even in low light, provided you want it to focus on something that has some contrast to it. (It will take its time to focus on a blurry hazy near black gray spot.) The Sigma lens makes the 5D feel as if it was a 5-10 years newer camera, with way, way upgraded autofocus and a sensor with much lower noise floor.

I would think lightroom would have an automatic distortion correction available for that lens. I know it has it for the lenses I use on my Canon and it corrects distortion and vignetting.

I think the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 is my favorite pairing, still top quality but far lighter than the 1.2

The 24-105 F4 L lens is a nice lens. It's good for all kinds of general work, from people to landscapes. Stop it down as needed for sharpness and DOF.

I have the 5D Classic with the EF 20-35mm F/3.5-4.5, the EF 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5 and the EF 70-210mm F/3.5-4.5mm. A great trio for the camera. I'm also looking for an EF 28-105mm F/3.5-4.5.

I've been thinking about getting the 20-35mm, seems like a good weight/size ratio for a wide angle lens.

I've been using the 50mm 1.8 II and it is very good,I also have the 28mm but have not tried it yet, also a couple of old cheap kit lenses from cheap film cameras which are almost ok but I think I need to try them using manual focus.....................................................

I had the 50mm for my 400D. The image quality is great and I was using it a lot, then I dropped it and it was in many pieces... I would get one again if I could find one for 20 euros or so. The weird thing is that they cost more used now than what I payed for a new one in 2006.
