Sorry for coming off as offensive, that was not my intention. They did not have spray paint, that was not invented yet. They likely used markers of sorts and paint.
Graffiti writers don’t write on their own property apart from to practice. Writers who know what their doing sometimes also don’t go tagging in their own neighborhood so that they keep their home address anonymous.
Easy answer. Vandalism. If its not yours you cannot deface it. Only artists seem to have a problem understanding property ownership until one of their designs gets defaced or ripped off.

Thank you. The entire debate about it being art or vandalism is stupid. It's certainly a form of art but it's also vandalism if you do it on someones else property. You're completely in your rights to do graffiti if you own the wall or have got permission from the owner. Otherwise it's destruction of someone else property no matter how beautiful it is.
whitepiano23 That's like telling someone that got stabed. Just recover from the wound and don't prosecute the offender. Or telling the vicitm of an arson to just buy a new house. From Sega's Jet Set Radio/Jet Grind Radio (2000) Graffiti is art. However, graffiti as an act of vandalism is a crime. Every state/province has vandalism laws that apply to graffiti, and local entities such as cities and counties have anti-graffiti ordinances. Violation of these laws can result in a fine, probation, or a jail sentence.
Maybe if it's on your own wall, it's art. If it's on my wall, it's vandalism. If I catch the vandal in the act of doing it, they have to answer to my security guards, Smith and Wesson.
Graffiti is both, I see no contradiction, for example, certain Graffiti while made illegally, could be considered "historic" and thus could be given protection even if it was made illegally, something that has been done and has precedent, of course I prefer the civil rights approach and saying well the owners can get rid of it and those who did it probably should be deterred from doing it.
Painting on other people's property is vandalism. Would want someone spraying paint on your house, car, book bag, coat, your door? People don't think about it until its their property. Solution? Buy a canvas.
I think most the people that do these sort of things don't own property. Because if it was their property that was getting drawn all over they would be upset. But because they own nothing, it's considered high art apparently. It's obviously both art and vandalism. Not only that, but a way to signal to other gangs and criminals that they are in the area and thus make that area more dangerous. As much as people want to make this mainstream, it shows how much those people don't care about other people around them and only focus on themselves and their "rebellion" not realizing that just because something is in public doesn't mean that it's just for them.
*Is it art? Is it vandalism? No. It's both.* *Graffiti is, the art of vandalism* *Graffiti is street art, but street art, is not necessarily Graffiti* That means, that there are other kinds of street arts that are not Graffiti. Graffiti is: To get your name up and make it stay there. Simple as that. Everything that doesn't contain your name, is not Graffiti. Graffiti is something more than street art. *It's a way of life*. Its philosophy. If this was a real wall. This comment would not be a Graffiti. But it could very well look allot like it. But it could be something else, Maybe another form of street art.
My personal take is that no matter where it is done, or what form it takes it is art , weather it be poltical messaging street art or a tag , the only thing i dont agree with is writting something explicity hateful such as insulting minorities a swastiki or using unessicarly insluting language
respect to the ancient greek and romans and other cats of antiquity who wrote their name, respect to cornbread and the philly style, respect to new york writers representing their street and getting up on trains, respect to blek le rat & invader for their characters, respect to mastiff dog for pichacao and those crazy freeclimbers, respect to computer nerds cranking out textmode styles on BBS, love and respect to all that get up, even if you utilize your acquired skills for 'non-insider' street art. for something that is not appreciated by the world, all we have is mutual love and respect and a hierarchy of rules to follow. keep it real. scribo ergo sum.
If the owner approves then it is not vandalism. I don't care how artistic you want to be, have the decency to just ask the owner of the store/house permission. Also, lets not pretend most graffiti is art. The vast majority is just juvenile attempts at being funny or representing some pathetic gang.
Graffiti and street art are not at all the same, sure they both use paint and do it on walls and stuff, but thats like saying a chef is the same as a knife killer, they both use knives right so they are the same thing.
I honestly feel like the should have more public art opportunities and public walls for garaffiti. A lot of kids graffiti illegal cause they naturaly want to do something like they should but can't find and legal oppurtunities. And honestly graffiti is better than thongs like drugs and gangbanging. People complain about deliquentry youths, but honestly, we are often just looking for something to do and the legal stuff is too exclusive or expensive.
"too expensive"? A quick google search shows that a 20-count box of sidewalk chalk is $2 and a *single can of spray paint* is worth $7 (of course the prices may vary from place to place, but I doubt the price difference makes the chalk more expensive). And don't tell me that chalk is a bad medium, people can do amazing stuff with chalk and the best part is *_it eventually washes away_* so any tacky "art" they make won't be anyone's problem for more than about a week.
Granted graffiti done right can be art with respected permission. But if you look at my downtown buildings, well, It just paints the picture your living in the slums. Fly a plane and spend some time looking at downtown Jacksonville. You would think we were living in the purge. There is no moderation at all. It's everywhere and it makes me scared to go there. O - O it's horrifying.
If it's in a gallery it's not graffiti. If it's not letters it's not graffiti. FUCK STREET ART FUCK THE BUFF BIG UPS TO ALL THE WRITERS OUT THERE(Even you flarp) I'M OUT YA'LL
An anonymous person, vadalizing private property, to force others into proximity with their opinion that they are not intelligent enough to disceminat legally. It could be a strong possibility that what a graffiti writer writes is in all likelihood useless, why else would a person have to resort to such a method.
I remember back when I was 16, the owner of this building hired a company to paint its wall. Big job, brand spanking new paint. Later that night the neighborhood kids spent hours drawing and writing their names on the wall. I was absolutely horrified. The thing that I noticed is that these kids, 13 to 16 years old, didn't make any mental connections that someone just spent a lot of money painting their property, their mind was more like, "Oh cool, this perfect to draw graffiti. Ever since then I associate graffiti with low IQs.
That's your respond? Close minded because I was horrified over some guy instantly losing thousands of dollars after hiring a bunch of guys to paint his building? I would call you low IQ, and narrow minded, and closed minded. Perhaps a criminal record since you can't associate that ruining something that belongs to someone else for your own person pleasure at that moment is very selfish.
I feel sad for you; thinking everyone that does graffiti is automatically has low IQ. Graffiti is only for those who are open minded, to explain it to someone who doesn't understand something and therefore hates it, is a waste of my time.
And you don't see the other point of view. Somebody has property, someone else comes and defaces it? To me that's close minded, and unable to see the point of view of others. Self focused. An artist is someone who can do things like drawing, make music, but you also have to separate those abilities with an act against somebody else property, especially after seeing that someone just wasted thousands of dollars specifically renovating that property. And most these people are not artist, they're just writing their name, or doing drawings that they could have done on a piece of paper, and looks just as bad as people who don't draw.
Writers do not write on peoples' personal belongings, cars and houses. Writing on a building for example, is ''ok'' in writers' eyes because not ONE direct person is paying for the damage. It is different, however, when ''writers'' paint small businesses. Then, ONE person would pay for the damage unlike painting a building that is run by a cooperation. Side note: Cooperations run the world and will contribute to the end humanity. Many writers hate the system and cooperations and ''rebel'' against them. Writers realize that what they do is vandalism and art. Some writers think everything is temporary and there is no need to be materialistic and want to live life their way because you only have one opportunity. Again, it is very hard to try to explain to someone who doesn't agree with graffiti, explain how some writers think. I agree it is selfish and it is vandalism. But to me, there's an art in that selfishness and vandalism that is called graffiti.
ART. I have rules no small or private houses and I don't involve politics racism etc. Only names or people and it must look decent if it doesn't then practice at home
3:19 Can someone tell me who made this piece or who it's inspired off of. I've seen that style everywhere and am thinking of getting something like as a tattoo.
It can be both. If you're painting or drawing on property that you don't own then that is graffiti. However some graffiti is artistic, such as the stuff Banksy does or the large murals that get painted. The stupid tags that you see on walls it just plain graffiti.

If you get consent to graffiti from the owner of the property, then it's art, otherwise it is immoral. At least in modern times.
+Burhan the Somali immoral or illegal. there are illegal things that most would consider moral.
Putting your name in some else`s truck just because you have nothing better to do is not art.
Equestrian Republican dude graffiti is art you express your self in one word it’s amazing

Love graffiti...to see it grow from the 70/80s to the present day and what the grafitti artist can do now.... AMAZING!
I miss when the New York subway was colorful instead of being a metal cage with no color.
when I first read the title, I thought that Kelly "Wall" was some kind of joke.
I know that there are some really nice graffiti out there, but the ones I'm used to is nothing but straight up vandalism. It's not art when what's tagged on the wall is hate, profanity, and the names of local street gangs. Don't do that shit on my wall or any public and private property. Do it where it can be better appreciate or where no one cares like a skate park or a flood control channel like the L.A. River.
Some people care about the skate park...
I really love graffiti art I think it’s a very important way of making your mark in the world
If you paint on your own property, it is Art but if you paint on someone else’s property, it is vandalism, pure and simple.
To be honest alot of graffiti is very pretty and they truly are wonderful artists
A lot? Maybe you shouldn't exaggerate.
Writers *. Don't mix them together.
the music and her voice made it feel like a 90s school documentary
0:11 what's that?.. I'm scared
So the Vandals were the first to commit vandalism?
What a coincidence.
Where did they get the spray paint??
Your joking, right? There was no spray paint.
Sorry for coming off as offensive, that was not my intention. They did not have spray paint, that was not invented yet. They likely used markers of sorts and paint.
+Josh Marshall The Vandals weren't graffiti artists. They burned and looted Rome.
I must have missed that in the video, sorry. Just ignore all I said then lol
the local store
As long as you are drawing on you’re own property it’s not vandalism.
Oh don't worry, it's cool if you deface my property, it's not like I own it or whatever. Or that I liked the current paint job. They are assholes.

+yüng Tohav You seem to be extremely upset as you post a ton of '''''''rude'''''''' comments as responses
what's the matter little guy? need ur blanket?
+Edward Karlsson just rub it off. its art
whitepiano23 That's like telling someone that got stabed. Just recover from the wound and don't prosecute the offender. Or telling the vicitm of an arson to just buy a new house. Also grafiti can be hard to rub off and you might have to do it every day. If you really liike grafiti that much. Let people do it on your walls.
I have just started filming some of the best street art walks in Europe on our youtube channel - there's no ad's or agenda - like this TED talk, just an appreciation. So thanks I really enjoyed the video and have subscribed.
From Sega's Jet Set Radio/Jet Grind Radio (2000)
Graffiti is art. However, graffiti as an act of vandalism is a crime. Every state/province has vandalism laws that apply to graffiti, and local entities such as cities and counties have anti-graffiti ordinances. Violation of these laws can result in a fine, probation, or a jail sentence.
This is really good got it for my homework to write comprehension questions!!
The difference between defacing and beautifying is permission, much like Underwear vs Bikini.
It depends what they draw or how they draw it for me.
grafiti is art its were you put it that makes it vandalism
Maybe if it's on your own wall, it's art. If it's on my wall, it's vandalism. If I catch the vandal in the act of doing it, they have to answer to my security guards, Smith and Wesson.
People should get permission from the city to draw anything on the walls otheewise its just vandalism
It feels really great to see the mention of taki 183, they have done some great research. And also the artwork of Banksy at the end . 🙌🙌🙌
Painting on other people's property is vandalism. Would want someone spraying paint on your house, car, book bag, coat, your door? People don't think about it until its their property. Solution? Buy a canvas.
日本語字幕本当ありがたい

I think most the people that do these sort of things don't own property. Because if it was their property that was getting drawn all over they would be upset. But because they own nothing, it's considered high art apparently. It's obviously both art and vandalism. Not only that, but a way to signal to other gangs and criminals that they are in the area and thus make that area more dangerous. As much as people want to make this mainstream, it shows how much those people don't care about other people around them and only focus on themselves and their "rebellion" not realizing that just because something is in public doesn't mean that it's just for them.
*Is it art? Is it vandalism? No. It's both.*
*Graffiti is, the art of vandalism*
*Graffiti is street art, but street art, is not necessarily Graffiti*
That means, that there are other kinds of street arts that are not Graffiti.
But it could be something else,
Maybe another form of street art.
In Alaska sailors did graffiti to let other sailors know that they're here.
as long as it isn't some where disruptive like on a business or house i think it is pretty cool
The vast majority is just juvenile attempts at being funny or representing some pathetic gang.
graffiti can be vandalism and art but they are not the same thing
facts
I expected kelly wall to be like some place where graffiti art got it's start
Graffiti and street art are not at all the same, sure they both use paint and do it on walls and stuff, but thats like saying a chef is the same as a knife killer, they both use knives right so they are the same thing.
I absolutely love this, more so because I watched the Get Down on Netflix. Books is so romantic😍😍
I did a 10 page research paper on this exact history haha but I added Spokane's Growing visual scene!
Do u still have it?can i read it?thank u
Granted graffiti done right can be art with respected permission. But if you look at my downtown buildings, well, It just paints the picture your living in the slums. Fly a plane and spend some time looking at downtown Jacksonville. You would think we were living in the purge. There is no moderation at all. It's everywhere and it makes me scared to go there. O - O it's horrifying.
If it's in a gallery it's not graffiti.
If it's not letters it's not graffiti.

An anonymous person, vadalizing private property, to force others into proximity with their opinion that they are not intelligent enough to disceminat legally. It could be a strong possibility that what a graffiti writer writes is in all likelihood useless, why else would a person have to resort to such a method.
no mention of hip hop? Not accurate anymore.
DO MORE RIDDLES PLEASE!!!!
We did a persuasive text about this!
Ever since then I associate graffiti with low IQs.
closed minded.
Well if the person has permission then it's not a problem, but if the person doesn't have permission then it's problem.
Why was the Alexamenos graffito shown at 1:01 as graffiti about magic spells?
I love TED-Ed graphics, but this one actually hurt my eyes some how. I hope they don't do anymore in this style
All cities should have public spaces for graffiti. Artists should be required to use water-soluble paint.
these guys should reaalllly consider a collab with HISHE
It's interesting to watch this without audio.
ART. I have rules no small or private houses and I don't involve politics racism etc. Only names or people and it must look decent if it doesn't then practice at home
Commercialism will almost always destroy the meaning art.

Thank you Ted ed
It can be both. If you're painting or drawing on property that you don't own then that is graffiti. However some graffiti is artistic, such as the stuff Banksy does or the large murals that get painted. The stupid tags that you see on walls it just plain graffiti.
This video still leaves me wondering.
Why didn't the Sehawks run the ball?
Of course it's art. Don't tag churches, cemeteries, playgrounds, or homes. Abide by those and you're fine
"What's this, then? "Romanes eunt domus"? People called Romanes, they go, the house?"
*Vandalism*........shoot on site.
AMEN !!!
Even knowing the answer, we must watch
As SEEN godfather of Graffiti said, graffiti writing has nothing to do with hip hop, same is my thinking cause in Greece i started graffiti writing back at 1984 when hip hop did not exist in my country!
Graffiti is something stupid that poor people do to demonstrate their stupidity.
"Poor"... if you want to do a piece it's going to cost you over 30 bucks and knowing it'll be crossed in a week
Clearly vandalism.
Graffiti isn't just done by gangs to mark their neighborhoods anyone can become a tagger
is music noise? or disturbance? is architecture art ? or optical pollution? are humans good? or bad?
psst some typographers are graffiti writers... (and so are some graphic designers...)... shhhhh
