    I was reading a masters thesis about graffiti and she had a quote that said, "if you put a pen in any child's hand, naturally, he will go to the wall" I love that because it seems that there is something in human nature that wants a bigger canvas, aka the wall

    I love graffiti- even just quotes and tags. However, I think it is wrong to deface historic buildings and people's homes and businesses. Otherwise, I always think that a graffitied wall will always look better than a blank one. It's like going through an art gallery that is less refined.

      @djdedan 8 років тому +101

      Big Gus yep, it's a form of personal deliberate expression which can be evaluated by the level of technique, creativity and skill involved, thus making it an art form... just because you don't like it, or don't get it, doesn't make it non-art, it just makes it art you don't get or like...
      of course if you mean "fine"art or "accepted" art then sure you can argue that a tag on the wall is not that...
      But lets look at why i think it's art: not only is it obvious an expression (which is all i need for something to be consider art) but there is also technique, skill and talent involved... the writer spends many hours/months/years honing their letter forms and dexterous control... they study other writers, they try different mediums, it's basically akin to calligraphy but done under intense situations (even life threatening) and yes there are some writers that are better than others, but bad art doesn't make it non-art...

      this is dumb. UA-cam comments cannot be vandalism. even if something harsh or unpleasant is said, it is not the same as destroying a company's trains or a piece of architecture. I am an artist myself, but the level of entitlement it takes to willingly deface property that is not your own is unreal. vandalism is a crime. I have no problem with graffiti, because it does not have to be on someone else's property. it can be done on your own or on cardboard or something. defacers should not be given a public platform like this.

      Sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree with you. You see, Ted-Ed covered up not mentioning the history of modern-day graffiti as we know it and reduced it to only including the name of "Taki 183" on the visuals only for a couple of seconds, who is basically its inventor by a seemingly "Thought out" debate about the concept of graffiti without talking about its proper history. This is a serious shortcoming here, it does not teach you anything about hip-hop culture, of which it is an element, not to even mention Banksy. It's pathetic that such valuable knowledge is undermined, only because it comes from the streets it is made less valid.

      i dont know if art is necessary based on its perception by outsiders. sure thats one reason to make art, but pieces of work can also be labelled art if the artist has, like you said, put their personal feelings into it or makes the artist feel something.
      music for example, may sound horrible to someone but was created under a specific circumstance that expresses the creators emotions.
      same thing with graffiti, seen as destruction and arbitrary scribble to some but could be an expression a feelings towards/of politics, humor, anger etc etc. in a unique way.

    It's funny how people are like "Uh, graffiti is not art, they just scribble shit" but pictures that are just plain grey are sold for thousands of dollars to museums. Like, graffiti is art. You don't have to like it for it to be art. I could draw a simple line and declare it art because "art" just means something that is done on purpose but doesn't necessarily serve a purpose. Therefore graffiti is art. It's still vandalism if done on public or not self-owned objects/properties though.

      3) Breakdancing
      4) Emceeing
      To say that Graffiti doesn't need to be related to hip hop is like asking if math is related to science.
      Obviously today, people that do graffiti might associate it with different forms of music, but this is not how everything begun and also we need to clarify here, that we are talking about Graffiti in particular and not for some other form or street art. My town, I feel, embodies this struggle between the accepted and immoral nature of graffiti. Whereas we do experience a lot of senseless 'tagging' done by younger wannabe vandals we also have arrangements that range from something a small as a homeowner to as large as city hall organizing a city wide project where graffiti is used to decorate public and private property alike. Although I personally don't like graffiti my former classmates would argue that graffiti has a different reputation here, even to the extent that my school had an entire class devoted to graffiti art.

    Easy answer. Vandalism. If its not yours you cannot deface it. Only artists seem to have a problem understanding property ownership until one of their designs gets defaced or ripped off.

      Thank you. The entire debate about it being art or vandalism is stupid. It's certainly a form of art but it's also vandalism if you do it on someones else property. You're completely in your rights to do graffiti if you own the wall or have got permission from the owner. Otherwise it's destruction of someone else property no matter how beautiful it is.

    From Sega's Jet Set Radio/Jet Grind Radio (2000)
    Graffiti is art. However, graffiti as an act of vandalism is a crime. Every state/province has vandalism laws that apply to graffiti, and local entities such as cities and counties have anti-graffiti ordinances. Violation of these laws can result in a fine, probation, or a jail sentence.

    Graffiti is both, I see no contradiction, for example, certain Graffiti while made illegally, could be considered "historic" and thus could be given protection even if it was made illegally, something that has been done and has precedent, of course I prefer the civil rights approach and saying well the owners can get rid of it and those who did it probably should be deterred from doing it.

    I think most the people that do these sort of things don't own property. Because if it was their property that was getting drawn all over they would be upset. But because they own nothing, it's considered high art apparently. It's obviously both art and vandalism. Not only that, but a way to signal to other gangs and criminals that they are in the area and thus make that area more dangerous. As much as people want to make this mainstream, it shows how much those people don't care about other people around them and only focus on themselves and their "rebellion" not realizing that just because something is in public doesn't mean that it's just for them.

    *Is it art? Is it vandalism? No. It's both.*
    *Graffiti is, the art of vandalism*
    *Graffiti is street art, but street art, is not necessarily Graffiti*
    That means, that there are other kinds of street arts that are not Graffiti.
    Graffiti is: To get your name up and make it stay there. Simple as that.
    Everything that doesn't contain your name, is not Graffiti.
    Graffiti is something more than street art. *It's a way of life*.
    Its philosophy.
    If this was a real wall. This comment would not be a Graffiti.
    But it could very well look allot like it. But it could be something else,
    Maybe another form of street art.

    I honestly feel like the should have more public art opportunities and public walls for garaffiti. A lot of kids graffiti illegal cause they naturaly want to do something like they should but can't find and legal oppurtunities. And honestly graffiti is better than thongs like drugs and gangbanging. People complain about deliquentry youths, but honestly, we are often just looking for something to do and the legal stuff is too exclusive or expensive.

    • @supercomputer5607
      @supercomputer5607 7 років тому +1

      "too expensive"? A quick google search shows that a 20-count box of sidewalk chalk is $2 and a *single can of spray paint* is worth $7 (of course the prices may vary from place to place, but I doubt the price difference makes the chalk more expensive). And don't tell me that chalk is a bad medium, people can do amazing stuff with chalk and the best part is *_it eventually washes away_* so any tacky "art" they make won't be anyone's problem for more than about a week.

    I remember back when I was 16, the owner of this building hired a company to paint its wall. Big job, brand spanking new paint. Later that night the neighborhood kids spent hours drawing and writing their names on the wall. I was absolutely horrified. The thing that I noticed is that these kids, 13 to 16 years old, didn't make any mental connections that someone just spent a lot of money painting their property, their mind was more like, "Oh cool, this perfect to draw graffiti. Ever since then I associate graffiti with low IQs.

    • @DV15TooStronk
      @DV15TooStronk 7 років тому +2

    • @inlovewithi
      @inlovewithi 7 років тому

      That's your respond? Close minded because I was horrified over some guy instantly losing thousands of dollars after hiring a bunch of guys to paint his building? I would call you low IQ, and narrow minded, and closed minded. Perhaps a criminal record since you can't associate that ruining something that belongs to someone else for your own person pleasure at that moment is very selfish.

    • @DV15TooStronk
      @DV15TooStronk 7 років тому +2

      I feel sad for you; thinking everyone that does graffiti is automatically has low IQ. Graffiti is only for those who are open minded, to explain it to someone who doesn't understand something and therefore hates it, is a waste of my time.

    • @inlovewithi
      @inlovewithi 7 років тому +5

      And you don't see the other point of view. Somebody has property, someone else comes and defaces it? To me that's close minded, and unable to see the point of view of others. Self focused. An artist is someone who can do things like drawing, make music, but you also have to separate those abilities with an act against somebody else property, especially after seeing that someone just wasted thousands of dollars specifically renovating that property. And most these people are not artist, they're just writing their name, or doing drawings that they could have done on a piece of paper, and looks just as bad as people who don't draw.

    • @DV15TooStronk
      @DV15TooStronk 7 років тому

      Writers do not write on peoples' personal belongings, cars and houses. Writing on a building for example, is ''ok'' in writers' eyes because not ONE direct person is paying for the damage. It is different, however, when ''writers'' paint small businesses. Then, ONE person would pay for the damage unlike painting a building that is run by a cooperation. Side note: Cooperations run the world and will contribute to the end humanity. Many writers hate the system and cooperations and ''rebel'' against them. Writers realize that what they do is vandalism and art. Some writers think everything is temporary and there is no need to be materialistic and want to live life their way because you only have one opportunity. Again, it is very hard to try to explain to someone who doesn't agree with graffiti, explain how some writers think. I agree it is selfish and it is vandalism. But to me, there's an art in that selfishness and vandalism that is called graffiti.
