I never even realized how fitting Wonderwall was for that scene. "You're gonna be the one that saves me." At the time, you don't realize the irony, but on rewatch or review it was so perfectly chosen in the screenplay.
Literally every drama show does the same thing. It's not even subtle. Lost is a lot of fun, and I've seen it through a few times, but I'll never get why people think it's a genuinely amazing show. It's pretty generic/formulaic and is extremely convoluted. Once again, I had so much fun watching the series, much like I did watching ABCs 'Revenge', or shows like Alias back in the day, because of the cheesiness and the camp value. I don't think Lost has strong writing, it isn't revolutionary and most of the 'aha' type moments are incredibly superficial. Loving watching their reactions to it, hope I haven't upset anybody here, or Suraj.
@Paulo Pereira You may not have seen it in other shows before, but flashbacks, flashforwards and flashsideways have all been devices in TV prior to Lost, even going back to sketch or variety shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Sure, there are arcs in Lost, it's not episodic television like the two shows you listed, it's more serialized in it's format, but it's still pretty paint by the numbers and hits its beats like most other drama shows. Exposition, doubt in another character or self, further exposition to the audience why that assumption is wrong, the character not having that exposition further creating tension before a climax. Desmond. Charlie. Locke. Claire. Sawyer. Kate. All characters follow very similar beats, even if their character progression is different. I'm not saying it's bad. I'm not ashamed to admit I liked it, but I don't think it's amazing television that's telling a unique story or in a special way like diehard fans do. Sorry. I just don't get the hype!
This episode is where LOST gets so complex for some people that they either stopped watching (on the road) or they watch it and then not understanding it. But its this complexity that for me just sets LOST apart from all TV Shows. So much food for thought, message, themes, emotions and character moments.
OnyCirja Yeah, I think that people who follow stories linearly start to get a bit fed up here. I think you need to be able to just ‘go’ with it & worry about getting answers later, or possibly not at all.
I'm really tired of blind fans saying that you need to just "go with it". If a narrative cannot accurately explain or provide context to what the hell is going on, it's because of bad writing. LOST is not some special show that gets a free pass to bullshit around because "you need to have faith that the story makes complete sense, don't think about it too hard"
Yup. Throwing al lot of shit at the wall and seeing what sticks isn't 'complexity'. It's simply bullshit. Lost is fun on a first watch. And then at the end you realize it was mostly just a lot of nonsense 'mysteries' thrown together, which fans imagine they can they dig really deep in, untangle, solve... all that food for thought, and it's just hot air. Still, it's certainly fun on a first watch. I'll never forget watching it every week back then. Good times. Good times, shit show.
Spoilers!! I just realised why Eloise says ''Pushing that button it the only, truly great thing you will ever do''. She doesn't know what happens after '07 because that's when a certain journal ends.
I guess it ends in late 2004 or early 2005 (and of course 1974-1977 after that) excluding some random short time-jumps to further years, which doesn't let him inspect enough to note stuff, right? Because Faraday jumped to 70s around 100 days after the plane crash and never came back to 2000s again?
You're right, we last see him in 1977, after spending 3ish years in Ann arbor (2007 off island for Eloise, I think). He came up with the whole 'variable' idea hear which I don't think Eloise ever believed in. He definitely gained notes during those 3 years eg: time travel notes/ H bomb notes/Hatch Des notes But the one I'm thinking of is which Oceanic people were there with Daniel in the 70's. I think that is why it ''has to be all of them for it to work''...I think.
Meh, that seems like such strange statement to say just based on the journal. I don't think the writers were thinking that far ahead. After all, she also knows the man with red shoes would die, but there's no way she got that from the journal. My guess is that they originally wanted her character to be some mysterious time traveler.
Rana is so smart. when Desmond gets told about the guy dying during the flashback, she inmediately thinks Claire is gonna die. she wasn't completely right, but she pretty much figured out the entire point of the episode right there!
So...something I hadn't thought about before...was the bartender originally hit in the head by the cricket bat? That's what Desmond remembered. But this time around, Desmond saved him which means he CAN change things that have happened or are destined to happen. Hmmm...Or maybe, if the universe has a way of course correcting, the bartender slipped and hit his head on the way home that night...
Charlie was going to take drugs before the flight, he almost takes drugs in the cabin but throws it down the toilet, he is tempted by drugs several times on the island, Ethan hangs him. I picture Charlie is on the bad list and has been saved constantly by colliding with the paths of the good ones around him. Charlie is a bad egg who's on a redemption arc to one of the good ones by the influence of those around him on the island.
19:31 Honestly, Hurley kind of pissed me off in this scene - he gets so hurt when people poke fun at him/doesn't believe him when he's acting "crazy", I would have liked to think that he actually would have been on Desmond's side in this moment
Yay Suraj! It's just not the same without you, glad youre back for this one, Butterfly Effect is exactly what comes to mind with this episode. Such a great one. Desmond is one of my faves and his entire story was so fascinating to watch. I love the scene where he sees Charlie singing in England and just freaks out and the subtle "Your gonna be the one that saves me" before the big reveal at the end, but the best moment/most mind boggling moment was when he was talking to Ms Hawking, she really left me shook "The Universe, unfortunately, has a way of course-correcting. That man was supposed to die, that was his path. Just as it's your path to go to the island. You don't do it because you choose to, Desmond; you do it because you're supposed to." So, so good!! Loved when Rana thought it was about Claire XD I thought that too but you never know, Charlie may survive us yet

@@gabrielleroux2333 but the "What happened, happened" laws don't apply to Des. Eloise Hawking seemed shocked, even though she knew from Dan's journal, that Des was special, in some way.
@@notoriousbmc1 my theory is that it does still apply for him too. It’s always what happened. I see lost timeline as the « time is a circle » theory. For Eloise, I’m thinking she simply overestimated his self awareness in this exact moment in his timeline. Des was still unsure of what was happening, thus making the choice of going for the ring. It’s only in later seasons that he realize WHAT is going on exactly, and is able to easily know where he is and why. If you think about it, Eloise probably thought Desmond coming in for the ring was just going trough the motion, and because he’d be expected to know what is to come he wouldn’t buy the ring.
