- HMCS Calgary is a helicopter carrying, guided-missile patrol frigate. She’s equipped with anti-submarine, anti-surface and anti-air warfare weapons, sensors and defences. Combined with state of the art damage control and machinery control systems, this frigate is one of the most advanced warship designs in the world.
A powerful naval task group has sailed east from ports in Canada to one of the most lawless maritime regions in the world: the Persian Gulf. As a part of a six-part HD documentary series, we follow the daily events and real-life stories of the brave men and women living and working to keep these warships running at a 100%.

The continuous music over powers the commentary from military personnel.. Killed the video..
The XO seems like he is a class act. Enjoyable ship series.
Im from Calgary and proud to see our own ship
Yeah but you have to park it out here in B.C.
Came back after remembering this ship from its large drug bust.
Thank You for your incredible service and sacrifice crew!
Watched her leave for that deployment, you made us proud Calgary, well done
i dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot my account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Zayn Archer instablaster ;)
@Leonidas Preston thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and im trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Leonidas Preston It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my ass :D
@Zayn Archer happy to help :)
One absolutely essential shipboard activity is cleaning. While not exciting, that never-ending task should be shown, especially since it takes up much off-watch time.
Loved Tim Hortons Day!! :)
Wow,great power ship,fast too
10:40 ish The guy getting corrected between north west and north east. Nice navigation skills there.
probably just nervous being on camera tbh, he sounded kinda nervous
Can't become a Commander, let alone the CO of a warship, without being alert of your surroundings at all times.
I enjoyed the men talking about their new born children and the photos are sweet. You are in my prayers. Stay safe...I hope you got your covid vaccinations. I get my second one next week.
Can't wait for the AQUAHOLIC review!
what would a Canadian warship be without a can of Tims :)
Oh my god… AB cook… is that the same guy who’s now a PO1 on the same ship? Cool dude
41:00 hands to breakfast, now that's something I can get behind!
It's a real shame this video is atleast 7 years old, Iroquois and protecteur are both decommed...
It was getting old and the fire in the engine rom which spread, wasn't worth the cost. Glad the new MV asterix is in service.
It's hard to take them seriously with those hats on. Fully kitted up or not.
In the US Marines we call them Boonie hats, we wear them every chance we get. Very comfortable.
@@NavyMax I get it. It's just they look like the hats Primary School kids in Australia have to wear. So it's humorous, at least to us. I was surprised they didn't wear baseball caps.
There's no life like it..
you SHOULD BE IN THE GULF OF MWEXICO TO STOP DRUGGGS
Maybe his new 40 million yacht needs new engines? Anyone waiting for an invite lol
Me too, hire the boys from NE Calgary from 30 years ago, we’ll smash any aggression
Except it’s Marlboro Park vs Dover lol, back in the day it was a good scrap on both sides, send those boys
Is this documentary from 2000, or does it seem very dated...I hope the Canadian Navy is a little more up to date now...
Boy thats an intimidating looking boarding crew 🤣🤦♂️
Alot of ships in the RCN have NTOG members assigned for boardings, the ones that don't rely on the crew of the ship. Plus this was filmed quite a while ago I believe (I don't remember the specific date but it was like 10yrs ago) so the NTOG wasn't really a thing back then either
WTF is a NTOG?
@@jeremyperala839 Naval Tactical Operation Group, used to be called Maritime Tactical Operation Group (MTOG) they're the usual boarding party of the RCN they are much MUCH better trained and equipped then the ones in this vid, they're training is said to be special forces like but they aren't regarded as special forces because they only work in the navy/ they only work on/under the water
@@aidanbegovic9584 does Canada have a Marine Corps?
@@jeremyperala839 no as there is no need for it,our army has units which train to do amphibious landings etc and they have tanks (like the usmc had),our airforce has planes and helicopters (like the usmc has),if there is a need soldiers can and have been deployed on RCN ships alongside sailors
I kind of find it odd that these huge ships don't have extremely high powered optics for scoping out stuff in the distance like how aircraft do. It looks like they are always relying on radar, radio, spotting scopes and binoculars.
it would be like mounting an astronomical telescope on a rollercoaster.
The ops rooms usually have cameras, but binoculars are more convenient.
Lose the background music - it adds nothing but difficulty to the video. geez
No mention of Harpoon missiles or Phalanx.
Because they don't have them. Calgary didn't have a CIWS, it was never really designed for solo operation, dispite that's what it did.
@@cgi2002 calgary has both a CIWS and harpoon missiles
@@joemeatballs3694 I forgot it had the rear mounted phalanx that's often as not useless as its fire arch covers just over half the ship, you really need 2 on a ship that size, one above the bridge and the existing one on the helicopter hangar.
As for the harpoons, honestly I suspected it had a similar system but not harpoons themselves, but then I keep forgetting that basically everyone uses harpoons or Brahmos systems.
What about the pollution from the shells ?
well done CANADA
Like the other similar programs, damned annoying background music.😵
Warning shots, figuratively make ‘em spit chiclets
Too many ads 😩😖😞😏
This video content is at least 10 years old.
I honestly don't feel good about giving out the names of crew, I don't think it's necessary and possibly puts them or their families in harms way. Just my opinion.
They should try English then switch to main gun.
In the US military the warrant officers eat with the commission officers.
Calgary is the only one left. :(
There still are other frigates, but hopefully the new Type 26 frigates will get built.
Interesting but the distracting and irritating rock music is also most inappropriate.
i serve aboard the uss voyager
Oh hell no
I really like this series but this background music is so f irritating...thumbs down for that!
Background music was annoying and did nothing for the program. Could not watch to the end.
Older docs are just as bad too
Unless someone had COVID a 150 Kim’s away and then he has to work from home lol, convenient ehh Justin lol
Most interesting but unfortunately spoiled by this terrible loud and unnerving music!
the music is complete cringe.
👍💙
Watching them handle and load their firearms was cringe worthy.
just get rid of that horrible background music
Maybe the environment minister since he let her buy him some Tesla’s, he couldn’t be seen in Yaris even lol, he’s better than all of us
As someone who’s from Canada, I can confidently say our military is shit.. our army is pretty decent, though few in numbers, but our navy is an absolute joke compared to what they were in ww2.. we kicked ass in ww2, but once the Cold War kicked off with Russia and the US lobbing nukes over our head, our government stopped building their own warships, and got really cozy with the Americans, relying on them to protect our borders .. the politicians of the time put their entire faith on the US and its ability to protect us .. our warships don’t even use AEGIS radar systems, even though we’re practically butt buddies when it comes to politics and the military tech, because they have the ability to track and lock on to ballistic missile threats.. the government doesn’t think it’s needed and won’t invest the money to equip our ships with these systems because we already have big brother US watching our skies, and the US doesn’t want Canada in that theatre of war
just started watching.....whats with the cowboy hats????
They are Tilley has and were adopted in the 90s
They show the map layout of the ship isnt that a breach? Now people know where to hit the ship. Fk up big time canada navy
At this point warship floor plans, weapons etc from almost all countries have been shown to anyone. Not to mention the in-person tours that took place before COVID, so I guess it's not too much of a breach in that sense.
So if I'm sailing in International waters, some organization decided that I can be boarded by Nations that they deem worthy, under the guise of preventing terrorism or some other excuse... Frankly, it's BS. I'm a US Marine veteran and the second someone decided they are going to stop me in international waters, I"ll treat them no differently than Somali pirates trying to board my vessel. Because in truth, it's not any different. They want to exert authority of someone else through force. It's sad that freedom can't even exist outside of national boundaries.
Thank your own government for suspending the Geneva Convention to create the grey area of detainees. Freedom is not free of law.
Like you'd win that fight. If you were truly a marine vet you'd respect the mission.
Would you treat the organisation the same if it were a US naval vessel?? They are out in these waters conducting similar operations. Being a Marine vet I'm sure you can appreciate the missions they are conducting is to maintain safe international waters, especially in a region with somewhat questionable countries aiding and abetting the pirates and other criminals of the seas??
Great folks but they seemed poorly funded, several are totally over weight and not very well trained so the firearms. Many appeared awkward handling the guns.
A ship like this can be destroyed in seconds by a single incoming missle. Most countries use ships like these for coast guard duties. A good job for these sailors is pizza delivery.
Pretty much any ship out there will get fucked up by a direct missile or torpedo hit, thats why there's countermeasures
LOL . NUTHING SAYS "CASTLEDOCTRINE" LIKE A FRONT LOBBY WITH MOUNTED TWIN .50's.
Call before Ya get to the front gate. DO NOT ENTER OTHERWISE.
His Father must be rolling over in his grave, embarrassing Justin but he’s WE rich
"one of the most advanced warship designs in the world" - um, nope. not anymore.
@Flames Fan no, because it's nearly 30 years old and is due for retirement.
@@raverdeath100 You ever hear of the term "refit"?
@@raverdeath100 Idk if it's TRUE but I heard somewhere that they're gonna start building new ships for the navy in 2023 to replace the halifax class ships
@@aidanbegovic9584 it wouldn't surprise me. the Halifax is the same generation as a Type 23 - they are now slowly being retired and replaced by the Type 26 and 31. the Halifax is long in the tooth and even the Indonesians have more advanced warships.
@@NovaScotiaKevin they have been..ever hear of the term"hull life"
if they have a radio, and I think they are required to have one, English would be the very minimum on international waters. but they don't respond in their language, either. Because "F* da west", I guess. And because "What have the Romans ever done for us?" A shame, really.
There is no legal requirement for you have a radio, or to respond to any vessel in international waters. Also no country has a legal right to board any other vessel (without the permission of the crew/owners) in international waters, it is an act of piracy. No ship in international waters can be boarded with the aim of preventing smuggling either without a specific UN embargo in place, as at that point they have not commited a crime.
Their actions here were highly borderline, they can request contact, they can approach and request to board, they can't force a boarding (even if they other vessel is armed). They can't risk setting this prescient as the Iranians would respond by boarding and searching any and every ship in the area saying "you did it first".
Basically it's a big show of force, but really has no legal power outside of a countries territorial waters, which every time there are arrests, that's were they are made. You can gather the evidence, but you can't actually legally arrest anyone until they cross into a countries borders and only then with that countries permission.
Lame. Should have never gone there in that ancient rust bucket. Canadian Forces stay home and stop embarrassing Canadians.
The music is absolutely irritating. Junk
