Business plans for original projects include secondary product sales, branding, etc (like toys or Star Wars oranges) as a means to increase the odds of recouping overall investment by the studios. Without copyright any schmuck can sell products based on the film, cutting into revenue.

Not an actual thing created by a big company but there is someone who does really good animations and has a show about SCPs. Good voice acting and everything. Forgot the channel name but the show is about a guy who works for SCP and has to like talk to the SCPs and it's pretty funny. Not so much horror, but still really good. Highly recommend.
