Burgess must've made at least 20 solid clearing headers prior to the mistake, and some after. Still cost us 2 points. Shrewsbury were a good team, they kept Hawkins out of the game and their keeper had a blinder.

Hawkins? Umm. When you're the front man, just saying that (Shrewsbury) 'kept Hawkins out of the game' says nothing about his abilities. He's been either, 'kept out of the game' all season or, he's not up to the mark. Kenny obviously sees something worthwhile, fair enough, the stats tell a different story. He is in League One now, less than 1 goal per 5 games (and no league goals this season) is begging the question. He's done well elsewhere, but is this where he belongs?

@@manfarangb There's no denying he had a quiet game, however I personally think that was due to the quality of Shrewsbury's defence. Pittman who scored 20+ goals in league 1 last season was also denied possession after coming on, he just scored the pen.

Burgess is prone to those kind of errors, it’s not the first time it’s happened and it won’t be the last. It’s a shame because other than that he’s a solid CB

Daniel Gillard well other than not being able to kick a ball to another player

I wasn't even there, It is just how he has always been :) Whatmough can pass decently. When is he back!!?

Fair point ungface. I've had a minor pop in my post, but yes - it noticed that Ronan Curtis was out, as Green didn't move, and Evans had to come for a throw-ins (etc) - and up front, not enough movement, and the wingers were a bit more 'staid' yesterday (?) - so not a lot of 'out ball' to be fair to him.

Dalsina, 2-3 weeks for Jack & Walkes (Ham and Groin). We've done 2 weeks? I think one of them will be fit by next weekend - with the other not far behind. KJ keeps his cards a little close to his chest on injuries (or is superstitioius) - or just plain sensible! I think Jack will be champing at the bit anyway. WIth Burgess' error, he's got a good chance of going straight back in?

Good point (all round) Daniel. He is a good 'allround' CB, but those errors, tend to be 'big' and/or result in a goal. A moment of indecision or a soft header, just seems to happen 3/4 times a season - and can get caught with a little forward whipping round him (he doesn't know he's there) - and 'nicks' the ball which was going back to GK.
BUT - He has all the tools, can bring it, pass, be sensible, tackle, I think for his height he could be better in the air though. But a good back-up for Jack & Clarkey. (Not to mention our Championship winning defensive pairing - AND the only bit of the team - the only partnership, that KJ hasn't needed to replace). Not that he had much choice with many of the other departures (most were too old, to step up another division, a couple had agreed deals elsewhere, and a couple we didn't have - e.g: a right-back since Ben Davies, or a centre-forward...!

Is it just me, or is anyone else surprised, that they haven't seen teams (including us) doing the "love train" that England put to such good use for corners at the World Cup?? (Shrewsbury *sort* of did it, but not the same shape, a couple of times - there's was more 'horizontal'! :o)

    • @davidpotter6564

I think the main advantage of the love train was that it nullified the crazy amount of holding during set pieces at the WC. You won't get away with that in league football so it's not really worthwhile.

Seems like a good point David. The amount of holding (& wrestling), *was* ridiculous.

Burge is a decent "all-round" centre-back. Think this is his level. Whatmough, Clarke & then Burgess (in that order) in terms of 'aerial dominance'. He's whole hearted, and can bring the ball out (more often than he has), but maybe lacks a bit of confidence in his own ability? We know Clarkey can bring it out, and is a 'baller - but so's Jack.
Burge will more often go for the 30-yard pass to the big striker. Still glad to have him though. But sometimes, want to shut my eyes, when a ball is played into the 'valley of confusion' (there's 2) - 1) Between 6-yard box and penalty spot horizontals. Then the 2nd (when we're pushed up - and one of there's plays a ball 'over the top') between (say) penalty area line and maybe 5 yards in, as to whether keeper's or defenders ball. We need to work on that with him I think. Slightly weird. as I think he's the tallest at 6ft 5"?

I was expecting a battering and we still got a point . Will be interesting when our team finally settles as we have lost all the good players from last season apart from Whalley . Good luck for the season . Didn't go this time ✌

A bit harsh on Burgess, yeah he was to fault for that clearance and there is no doubt about that but the main concern was how badly we played in the centre of the park the whole game. Sloppy passes, over run, no urgency to close down and at times no way of breaking them down. We can't afford to play like that against a better side (no disrespect to shrewsbury). I can fogive an error as it happens to even the best of players but in truth, we played shocking in midfield.

    • @10Duser
      @10Duser 6 років тому

Understood. I thinn under Jackett's 'tweaked' 4-2-3-1, the 'wingers' have to 'tuck in' more - whereas under Cook, the full-backs were overlapping despite being in a 4. So we can get overrun in midfield. Thompson off (but it was going to happen, he'd impressed so much in the games prior), and to be fair to Evans, not his natural position (?). Naylor is decent, but sometimes, as the 'screen' for the back 4, he is on his own too much.
If I were an opposing manager, I'd have 2 strikers closing him down at first chance - then we're down to either Burge launching it a bit, or Clarkey bringing it out. There is no all-round winner I suppose, or we'd all be playing it!
