If you are wanting a new bike yes Harley's are reall expensive, but if you just want a Harley Davidson there are some real gems out there older bikes with low miles that look new for a great price.

I heard trash talk about my Harley Davidson. And l really don't care what they like or don't like. All that know is l like what I ride. And that's all that really matters.

I'm 60 years old and have been riding for nearly 50 years on multiple bikes over the years. The last one was a 2001 HONDA interstate VALKYRIE with a bat wing... I rode 12,000 miles through Canada, East Coast USA, and the Gulf Coast, then back to Canada, where I'm from originally. When people see the bike, they ask... is that a Harley?
When I talk about my long trip and say to people, my big bike. Many immediately assumed it was a Harley.
The bottom line is that if you want the Cadillac of cruisers, you buy a HARLEY!!!
    NEXT BIKE HD...

I feel like you’re looking at the moco with rose colored glasses. They are just now getting to the point where their competitors were at 15yrs ago. But they are purposely creating demand and cutting back on manufacturing to maintain “prestige” ie price rigging.
As far as reliability you just have to look at the live wire, the panam, or the the sumping issues with the m8. The forums are full of people discussing issues with them. Harley is STILL unreliable and poorly designed. They just arent leaking oil.

I think that what annoys many is not the bikes, but what many Harley owners do to them, specifically that the fitting of obnoxiously loud slip-ons seems to be considered almost a necessity. Compared to other brands a disproportionate number of Harleys seem to have these loud exhausts, and it doesn't do anything positive for the image of motorcycling in general.

Not gonna lie Hollywood, I had a Honda shadow for 13 years. The reason I bought it initially was because I was told from someone who worked at the Honda dealership “Honda owns Harley the only real Harley-Davidsons are the old school ones” so me being a ignorant punk all those years ago took that as fact. I’ve gotten crap all throughout the years by HD riders about driving a “hardley” so that kinda kept me at bay. My brother bought a iron 883 I hoped on it wasn’t a fan. My friend had a dyna street glide and I rode it and man was I impressed so I went to the dealership and bought a 09 Dyna street bob and I fell in love with it. Night and day compared to the Honda which made me even happier with my purchase it really was a nice upgrade

Up until the early 2000s i wouldn't go anywhere near one. There was such an arrogance about owning one and let's not forget about the waiting lists at the dealerships. From where I stood they seemed overpriced and overrated and overhyped. That wasn't because I couldn't afford one but because I refused to pay it. It seemed like a bad deal.
By the early 2000's the dealership experience had gotten better, the bikes didn't leak anymore, and I was finally ready to take a chance and try one out.
My first Harley was a Sportster and that was a class-A experience. My twin cam was a lesser experience but now that I have all the bugs worked out of it it's a keeper. I'm glad I got a Sportster first because if I had experienced all the extra issues of a big twin right from the get-go I probably would have gone right back to a Japanese bike. I'm at a point now where I like mostly all brands but when it comes to Harley's I generally like the Evo models the best especially the Sportsters.

I love Harley to death and have owned a couple myself. I think the biggest problem right now is that they are way overpriced and that might be what is driving everyone over to the metric brand. I know that you can buy a Kawasaki Vaquero out the door for 18995.00 give or take some. It also looks like a Road Glide.

To me it's not the bike it's the attitude. A lot of Harley owners treat anyone not on a Harley like he/she is beneath them and far as I concerned you can GFY if you're like that. I have a Fatboy and I've noticed a lot of the ones that will chat me up when I'm riding it won't even talk to me if I'm on one of my Japanese bikes. To be fair it's not just Harley folks because I've seen Goldwing riders be snobbish like that as well.

Here’s where the double talking comes in: High maintenance does not equate to being reliable. Any combustion engine vehicle whether it’s 2, 3, or 4 wheels, metric or American will be reliable as long as its up on a lift once or twice a month getting parts adjusted or replaced, adding and replacing top dollar fluids at regular intervals, washed and polished everyday or every other day, ridden gently for a couple thousand miles a year and garage kept the rest of the year.
Let’s go a step further-I’ve had diehard Harley Riders dressed to the nines with HD gear that have admitted to me that they’re tired of having to stop at 2 or 3 HD dealerships to keep their bikes running when they ride across country. And these are late model bikes not old knuckleheads or pan heads or even twin cams.
I’ve had diehard Harley riders whine, bitch and moan about the cost of dealer service intervals, overpriced merchandise, returning 2 and 3 times to fix the same issue but they’ll turn right around and throw another $600 to $3000 into the same things they’ve been complaining about.
You simply do not need to put that much time, effort and money into a metric bike. I’ve had more than my share metric bikes and one Harley and spent a fraction of time and money on maintenance and upkeep in comparison to a Harley. That’s not speculation, that’s not favoritism that’s over 35 years of experience. You can literally neglect a metric bike, especially a Honda for thousands of miles and it will keep on performing. How many guys riding Harleys can say they’ve done that. The point is this: clocking as many endless miles on the road as possible without worrying about service intervals or breaking down on the road.

I own a 180k mile FLHRCI & a like new XL883c. While I Love my Air Cooled EVO Motored Harleys , the hard cold truth is ... Bikes from other companies work better & cost WAY less to own & enjoy. My Honda VXT was MADE IN AMERICA ( LOOK IT UP) rumbles just like my Roadking & has NEVER left me stranded. I can't say that 'bout our beloved HD BIKES. My 07 Vulcan500LTD just "OOZES CRUISER" & out performs my Sportster, same thing when it comes to reliability. The XL1200R / XR1200 & MOST BUELLS Handle Good (4a HARLEY) BUT my Vstrom1000 beats them ALL on the Twisty Canyon Roads while also being more comfortable. The new so called Sportsters got a fast motor but almost No Rear Suspension Travel , just like most of HD's best looking bikes, except the PanAmerican , which has lost its original Vtwin Feel , Sound & (dare I say) SOUL !!! I want the most "Bang 4 My Buck" & more " Go 4 My Dough" So .. HARLEY IF YOUR LISTENING , BRING ME A 100 HP XR800 with a $9000 price tag.
Not trash talkin. Just Being REAL

I remember when I was growing up the man leaving across the alley from me had a Harley Davidson. He often had problems with it. I remember seeing him out there often and his bike would not start. I also saw people with japanese bikes and they would fire right up. They also had much more power and cost much less. When I rode my brother in laws 2007 Heritage Softail I wanted one. Last year he sold his and I bought it. It is a great bike. It is a very refined bike.

I've been around Harleys since ''Made in Japan'' were fighting words. The 70's still had a war in Vietnam, and AMF used more and more imported Asian parts. But what I found burned me just as much were these 'instant biker' jerk-offs on Evo's singing the "Jap Scrap" tune when a greater percentage of their Evo and officially licensed accessories were in fact, Made in Japan, or Taiwan, than any Shovelhead.

I think it largely has to do with principle. It's like paying $7.50 for a domestic draft beer that costs the bar about 35 cents. Understandably, any business that wants to stay open has to make a profit. But Harley's cost more than some cars and trucks. I believe a lot of consumers feel that's unjustified and that they can get more value from buying a metric cruiser. No doubt Harley Davidsons are well-built machines, and I've owned a ridden them for decades. Still do. But, come on Harley Davidson...

My last metric bike was a 2007 Honda VTX 1800 T. I went to Sturgis with it and had a blast. At the time (2014) guys with Harleys gave me a hard time because of the stock exhaust, which I updated later. The VTX in 2014 was kicking new harley Street Glides, (it had 106 Hp). Now I am a harley guy and very happy. I always wanted a Harley, but financially couldn't do it, so I did want I could do until I could afford a Harley. I have been riding since 1970. The bikes are great. I mostly trash talk the dealers and the Motor Co. itself. Every dealer I have gone into recently wants to charge me a couple of grand above MSRP. I don't see why Harley can't include heated grips/seats, and traction control as standard on a 30k bike. My 8k Moto Guzzi and 12K Triumph has traction control standard.
I would love to have a new Road Glide but I feel like I am being bent over as soon as I walk into the Harley Dealer.
As far as maintenance your going to pay 125$ an hour at any brand you go to.

Its strange, but many people thinks that EVOs and newer HD bikes are ok.
And older ones(Harley Davidsons) is always a lot of mechanic jobs, to keep them running?
No, I had 1942 war machine 750cc side valves, the only mechanic work I did on this bike was to strengthen the primary chain, and due to this, I have to strengthen the rear chain. I changed the circuit breaker once, and did some ignition linements, and that's it for 5 years, constantly riding every day from middle of April to 1st November for 5 years, I dont see this as a problem.
My newsiest Harley 1947knuckle, I put 3" belt on and a phase 3 clutch never any strengthen work.
Been riding this bike since 1981, never any stop on the roads, never any big repairs, its was renovated after 20 years riding once, and since then its running perfekt, so all the wrenching ? I dont understand ??????
I would say that the old bikes are more reliable then the new ones, and its not any electronically problem, no electric problems, and its easy like hell to find out if any problems should occur, is there any gasoline coming, are there a spark on the spark plugs, if both is ok, yes then it will start.
Try this simple issues on a new bike?, you dont even know what to look for, or where to look, among all the cables, plastic covers etc etc
Some people thinks that an old Harley is only problems, and you need to be a trained mechanic, but all that its just a myth
Ok a newer bike is more comfortable to go on longer runs, no doubts about that, rigid frames are hard for the asses.
But Im not in a hurry, I go 250km a day( 155 miles), Im 69 years old, so this year I will start to use my small AirHawk pillow, to be more friendly to my ass, but I take it easy, and enjoy the ride, have a joint and a beer from time to time.

We can't tune them. ALL the work being done is mostly coming out of Thailand. It is also locked at 113mph. It rides wildly different than other Harleys. I think you are still overlooking the obvious when it comes to this topic. There seems to be a humanistic tendency to exert the belief that the group, product, religion, etc etc is better than the others; almost like an egotistical point of view so people feel better about themselves and their choices. It seems that this behavior is pervasive in most all societies. The other point is that, while maintenance is important regarding all machines, most of the Japanese motorcycles require much less maintenance than the Harley's. I do not believe this is conjecture.
