If you see the yellow exclamation icon above the Settings cog in the Status Bar
That means you have an update to Steam OS waiting for you.
But did you know that you can also manually check for these updates?
This process may sound simple to those who have had the Steam Deck for quite some time.
However, more and more people are getting the handheld console these days and they're just beginning to learn how the software works.
So you can either tap it to go directly to the update page.
Or you can press the Steam button on the side here.
Dive into the Settings area.
And then look in the System section
You should see the Updates are right up here at the top.
If you have an update waiting for you, then this is where you will choose to Download or Apply it
But if you're proactively checking to see if there's an update then this button will let you check to see if there's a new one.
These updates will be downloaded over a WiFi connection and you can then choose to reboot the console to complete the installation.
Sometimes these are just minor updates to SteamOS, and the reboot process is quite fast.
Other times, you'll be told that a firmware update is required in order to install the latest version.
That process takes much more time and will have you waiting a few minutes before the Steam Deck will reboot back into Steam OS.
Either way, Valve has made it quite easy to make sure you're using the latest version.
Personally, I like to check for these new updates before I jump into a gaming session for the day.
But I also know some people who wait until they're done playing for the day. . .so they can jump right into a game without having to wait for updates to be completed.
