I have not been through such an emotionally and mentally grueling relationship in my life. My ex is very calculated, charming, and cruel. Every time he talked that let's be friends stuff I already knew he was using it as a way to orbit around me. She is 100% accurate every bit of what she said is My Aquarius man. He always tells me "You think you know everything" I get so sick of hearing this, he's super detached gets mad when i call him weird & lacks empathy. Add to that mental health issues. As much as I agree on pretty much everything you've touched on in terms of how Aquarians' dark side will express itself, I want to come to their defense a little bit in terms of where they come from. The one thing Aquarians cherish above everything (and everyone) is freedom (could explain their love of nakedness, too ;)), and they have a visceral need to be allowed to be their own authentic selves at all times and in all areas of their lives. So right off the bat they have an issue with authority type relationships.. but pretty much ANY relationship (family, friendships, love) can potentially become ''suffocating'' for an Aquarian if the other person is too different from them, because inevitably that calls for compromise, and to Aquarius compromise is a cage to their bird, and they can't suffer it. As you said, it's ''their way or the highway'', but not in a vain, narcissistic or capricious way. It is simply that for an Aquarius, not to be able to be 100% themselves equates to death. So if they are in a relationship in which they and their partner are seeing less and less eye to eye, and they have the option to either compromise (i.e.:supress/negate parts of themselves for the good of the relationship) or get the hell out (i.e.: be free), they will never let the bell glass of compromise (self-neglect/self-betrayal) snuff their candle. It's not manipulation, it's a question of life and death to them.
Also Aquarians aren't alpha types. They themselves cannot suffer authority, and they don't care about other people following them. They are omegas. They do their thing, period. They don't care for leading (being a leader is a responsibility in itself, and responsibility takes away freedom), but they'll die before they let themselves be led by someone else. If the only other option is to take the lead to avoid being led, they migth try to take it, but I do believe that in most cases they will just walk away from any relationship, situation, etc that is restricting to them and taking away their freedom.

Thank you. :) I do have an Aquarian moon, and am Gemini sun and rising.. so I do have good first hand knowledge of air signs in general I guess. I used to be with a Libra and am now with an Aquarian, who gave me a lot of insight into the sign as it fully expresses itself as somebody's sun.. Me, I feel it as an underlying energy, more abstract in a way, but he has this array of Aquarius antics that I of course find absolutely lovable.. It takes courage to be our true, authentic selves in a world where judgement comes easy and ''free spirits'' and ''independant thinkers'' are often frowned upon by the abiding majority. He's inspiring me to let my own inner Aquarius out more.. AND he was all for my idea of having separate bedrooms when I presented it.. I mean, how awesome is that, not having to explain and debate your need for privacy even within your relationship!.. ;) So refreshing..
