I have learned so, so much from Gavin Hoey. You can add the names of Mark Wallace and Daniel Norton to that list. Oh, I can't forget Ask David Bergman. Those quick tips are great for when I am in a hurry and need to reference a technique really quickly. Before the pandemic I would travel on the NYC subway from Westchester to Adorama to see and hear Daniel and his team. Boy, things have changed. So happy Adorama can still provide learning tutorials via UA-cam to keep photographers on their toes learning new techniques to keep our skill sets up to date or refresh our memories. Thanks Everyone!
Another great teaching video with Gavin and Chloe, I really appreciate you for putting on these lighting events. Just got my Evolve 200 today to add to my lighting from Adorama.!
Thanks, very helpful, Gavin! I'm trying to separate the background without any success. I've shined a Floodlight at it and still no separation. A second light, which is a Speedlight, will be the next test. This time your suggestions will be used. Great video!!!
Thanks again Gavin for an excellent tutorial. Winter time means more indoor shooting, and it is really great to re-visit your tutorials online - it really boosts the enthusiasm and motivation. I appreciate you shearing your settings with us when showing the pictures you take as you go. However, I wonder if the flash settings you have written for the two first methods are mixed up. You say that the key light is set to f/8 and the separation light is two stops less, i.e. at f/4. When showing the details (at approx 3:20) you write "Key light 1/8" and "2nd Light 1/4". I assume these are in fact f/8 and f/4. What makes is a bit confusing is that for your third option (at approx 5:10) you write that "Key Light 1/16" and "2nd light 1/32" and you measure the 2nd light to f/8. I am guessing that for the two first methods you are on 1/16 power for the key light (assuming you kept this on the same power throughout the shoot), whereas the second light is powered at 1/64. I also have a question; Where can I find the calendar for your live events?
Great as always Gavin - I have progressed from raw beginner to at attempting some quite advanced stuff through watching your videos but I regularly pop back to you for reminders of the go to light set ups that cover nearly all situations - and I always get some creative ideas or useful tips and always enjoy watching . Lately I have been having troubles with my tether connection at the camera end - how do you secure your tether cable and as a totally unrelated point do you have a Patreon account or similar?
Hi Gavin, I knew about the HSS vs ND , was puzzled (momentarily) why you would use HSS in studio setting. Same principal, shallow DOF, but different application. Nice!
Well actually Dee I'm not far off that now! I have a new video every other Thursday and I go live once every four weeks... basically I'm right here three out four Thursdays 😁
Hi Sami. If it helps I was mostly somewhere between 12mm and 40mm when I was using the Olympus 12-40mm lens 😉 Sadly the focal length I used with the Olympus 45mm lens has been lost forever 😁 Usually I'm working at 35mm - 40mm 👍
This is a brilliant tutorial...but that's nothing new with Gavin Hoey!! THANK YOU. So just one question...can one of these lights be a continuous light?
Hello Gavin, Great video. Question: I notice that you are tethering to some kind of table. Can you tell us more about your setup and what software you are using for tethered capture. Thank you.
Another spot on video, can I ask about your monitor screen. Iv been trying to tether my Samsung tablet to my fujis but to no success. The Fuji app is not really useful and I just want a bigger screen. Many thanks.
Hi Gavin, I have a beginner question for you. I saw you take pictures with ambient lights on, but I guess is just for tutorial purpose. I guess you turn ambient light off, while you are shooting the photos that you show up, correct ? thx
I use a TetherTools USB-2 cable to connect my Olympus camera to my Lenovo Miix laptop / tablet. That runs Windows 10 and I use Olympus Capture and Olympus Workspace software to tether and then display my photos. I hope that helps.
Hi Sanu. My flash meter is about as basic as it comes, so it doesn't support anything. It has a button on the side that both zero's the previous reading and prime's it to look for a flash. I then press the Test button on the Flashpoint transmitter and check the meter reading. If the powers not what I want I simply repeat the process 😉
7:00 wait so is that a CTB/blue gel as described? It looks like just a teal gel lol. Why not just say it's a teal gel? Because CTB and teal gels are COMPLETELY different things.
I am a bit confused on the reason you used high speed sync. I understand going to a larger aperture to blur the background, but shouldn't you still get a black frame at the larger aperture with the shutter speed at 1/200th? I thought the shutter speed controls the ambient light.
Hi John. Unfortunately "Shutter speed controls ambient light, aperture controls flash" is one of those unhelpful and misleading things that is in common circulation. If I open the aperture to f/1.4 my camera will record lots of ambient light (flash or no flash). To remove that uncontrolled light I could... Lower my ISO, add an ND filter to the lens, turn the room lights off or increase my shutter speed and use HSS flash. Over the years I've done them all and probably made a video about it 👍
To be honest i was thinking of flash units for on camera use not studio flashes i do a lot of out of studio work and i only use my flash units on slave
I think I might be able to help there Ismael. That's my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 tablet / Laptop. It runs Windows 10, so any tethering software that works on Windows will work. I use Olympus Capture and Olympus Workspace to handle the capture and display.
Hi Judith. I use a Sekonic L-308s flash meter to measure the light and a Flashpoint transmitter to trigger the flash. You'll find links in the video description for more details.
That's not an iPad, it's not an android tablet either. That's my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 laptop / tablet. As it's a Windows 10 device it runs any standard tethering software, in this case Olympus Capture, and connects via a TetherTool USB-2 active extension cable.
That'll be my brilliant Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 tablet / Laptop. It's getting on a bit and not longer made but a Microsoft Surface Pro would be a current alternative.
Switching to HSS to open aperture from F:8 to F:4 using those flashes is really not needed and will harm the flashes in the long run. If you were at 1:2 power, to „lose” 2 stops just go to 1:8 power :-)
@@GavinHoey Right, from F:8.0 to 1.4 are 5 stops and the flashes you were using have 9 stops adjustment from 1:1 to 1:256. If someone is at 1:8 power at F:8 at F:1.4 will be at 1:256 power.
@@RaduGrozescu What you're overlooking is the ambient light. By opening up the aperture by 5 stops I'd no longer be in control of the light and would capture a mix of flash and ambient light. Increasing my shutter speed with HSS flash gives me back control. I could have also used an ND filter or simply turned off the room lights... but that would make for a very dark video 😉
1st comment just to appreciate Gavin, almost 8 years doing this and he still has the same energy as from day 1

2 reasons I love Thursdays, 1) it's almost the end of the working week 2) It's a Gavin Hoey tutorial day. 😊
I couldn’t agree more 👍
Wonderful! Everything becomes easier when there is a great teacher. Thanks Mr. Hoey. From Rome.
Not to take away from any of the other Adorama presenters, but Gavin's videos are always among the best.
Considering the calibre of the Adorama team, that's very kind of your Rick.
Gavin, you are a gift to all of your fans. Great video!
Always wonderful to learn from Gavin's vast experience and his pleasant & friendly voice too.
If you were a show on tv you would be my favorite sitcom! Bringing ideas to me to shoot with!

Thank you Gavin and cheers from Buenos Aires.
Thank you Mr Gavin, almost my best portrait photography tutor!

Man thank goodness for the expertise of Gavin...who I've been watching since he started his own channel....and my future wife Chloe😉
Thanks Rick. I'm don't want to be the bringer of bad news but Chloe and you... it's just not going to work 😉

Nice little hack using HSS as a de facto ND for your flash. 👍
Hi Tim, I'm glad this helped. If ND filters or HSS is a question you're contemplating check out this video ua-cam.com/video/TCb5Yu6p15E/v-deo.html

Great stuff, Gavin - I love coloured shadow fill. I have done a couple of shoots using this now (after seeing you do it!) and they look great!
Thanks Alun. Once you've got the hand of it, toned shadows look amazing.
Thanks Gavin. Somehow the portraits seem soft; I wonder if it is the video compression? Nice tutorial, as always.
