      Here's a weird question for you: If you were to listen to a beginner speaking Swedish etc, would it be possible to recognise which learning method / app / whatever that person is using, just by how it sounds and what words they use? and is there a relationship between language learning and being a singer / musician? I should probably ask someone with some kind of "ology" but don't know anyone. 🙃 Sorry if I broke your brain / this isn't relevant or whatever.

    Hej då Joakim! Gog morgon från Grekland. For me, the "secret" in learning and speaking a foreign language, is to think only to the language you're trying to speak, to "forget" your native one and not to translate, for example Greek to Swedish and vice versa. Tack so mycket. Yiota...

    This is what sucks about duolingo. As a German speaker, skipping english would make it so much easier, because the word order is closer.

    Beginner here. My greatest difficulty so far has been with pronunciation. For example, "gratis" and "grattis" get me confused all the time. The thing is, in my mother language (Brazilian Portuguese) the word for "gratis" is pronounced exactly (or almost, depending on the accent) like "grattis".
    Another compounding factor is that Brazilian Portuguese is relatively forgiving of how it's vowels and some consonants are pronounced, so we generally have a harder time hearing the subtle differences in the more stringent languages like the Germanic ones. On the upside, we can pick up Spanish and, to a lesser degree, Italian relatively easily.

    • @sayitinswedish
      @sayitinswedish  3 роки тому +2

      That's super interesting. I'd say that, the double consonant isn't as important as trying to at least get the vowel length right. The vowel qualities are different there, meaning the a in grattis and gratis are two different vowels.

    I struggle with the Swedish word order a lot. Not because I default to English word order, but because I just can't remember all the rules for Swedish word order (like in bisats, for example), so I sometimes just guess, and usually get it wrong.

    The theory that even native speakers of another Germanic language make these latin word order mistakes makes a lot of sense to me if I think about it. I had Latin as my first foreign language in school and a few years later English and French. So my brain is conditioned to use that word order when learning a new language. Even though I just need to make myself clear, hey just use the order like your used to in your native tongue. Thanks to the lifelong plasticity of our brains we can still form new habits though. We just need to keep repeating it the right way.

    Very off-topic topic question. The word for the number 6 can also be used to mean intimate relations. How can I avoid the ambiguity when, for example, trying to explain that my car is so spacious that I could easily have 6 people in it?

    • @sayitinswedish
      @sayitinswedish  3 роки тому +1

      There is never any ambiguity. We don't say "man kan ha sex i bilen" (you can have sex in the car) when we're talking about how many people are in it. We say "det får rum 6 personer i bilen" (six people fit into the car) or something.

    Inconceivably good video, thank you Joakim!
    Btw, how many words that have got various meanings despite of emphasis (like *anden* or *biten*) does Swedish have?
    If we are talking about Finland Swedish that's almost without harmoning emphasis (akut 'n' gravis), how can you define certain meanings for those words mentioned above? Please, let me know.

    • @sayitinswedish
      @sayitinswedish  Рік тому +1

      There aren't that many pairs and they don't matter much. In Finland there isn't this distinction and dialects realize these accents in different ways. The grave accent in one dialect might sound like the accute one in another. So it does not interfere with understanding. However, if your pronunciation is very, very good it will come off as very strange when you use the wrong word accent.

      Weird that you take it as criticism when i don't critize anyone in the video. I'm making people aware of the errors basically everyone makes. Nowhere do I say that anyone is stupid for it. The mistakes are common for a reason. So what I say in the video is useful stuff. Just listen and learn instead of taking the video as personal criticism.

      @@sayitinswedish I had been in Sweden for about two months. My gf had been back six months (I came later because I had to renew my Irish passport). We were going back and forth between Swedish and English. She had not spoken English to the degree she did when she lived here before coming to the States. We were babysitting her infant cousin (we lived in the apartment above her parents). Her mother asked what she was doing. Gunnel said, with Swedish words but English grammar, "I'm giving the baby a bath." It sounded okay to my ears, considering my level of Swedish. But it sounded odd to her mother.
