- The Sociological Imagination: Who We Are and How We Got Here - Part 1--This course provides a sampling of problems and methods used by sociologists, with
concrete examples from everyday life, history, and contemporary events.
I'm a retired sociology professor, having taught at a community college for 27 years. I'm so grateful for these talks. This man is absolutely wonderful, not only in what he discusses, but how he delivers the material. He's so right: Sociology is a unique breed of discipline. I may be biased, but I imagine sociology as the center of a flower and the other disciplines he mentioned are the petals. They are all part of the flower, but sociology is at the center. What can you do with a degree in sociology? You'll find sociology majors in business, journalism, law, government, healthcare, education, and many other areas. Studying sociology will open your mind and make you a more informed, well-rounded and engaged citizen. Thank you, NYU!!
You're so right and you know what? I know people who've studied pure law and graduated in the top 2% of their class but have the worst people skills you could imagine. No firm would dream of hiring them....but someone with a sociology degree who can critically think, write and form arguments would breeze past them when going up for a job.....I'm a neuroscientist by profession but have always been fascinated by the humanities....it's that crucial intersection between creativity and science.....without it we'd be finished as a society....
Just passed my Sociology CLEP Exam. Thank you NYU & Prof Molotoch for making this lecture available to the masses!
Bro I am prepping for that same test. Is there any chance I can text you for some advice?
@@oscar.fantasia Did you succeed or fail?
Thanks Monica. I was wondering about the name of the Prof you have mentioned. I find this lecture and planning to play this professors lecture as background sound of my sociology study.
@@uwaisalqarni4431 Prof. Harvey Molotch
Six year later but congrats, Monica. Probably, Dr Quinn now...
I've been reading The Sociological Imagination by C. Wright Mills and I must say I've been trying to discuss this matter with other people who are enlightened by the topic. The professor is genuine and light which lifts the burden of a complex topic into one that many may understand. It is truly a gift of teachers to evaluate and interpret their understandings of readings into comprehensible and coherent concepts. Late in the game but thank you!
I'm so excited to have found this professor! He makes learning so much fun, and honestly I kept stopping the video to go research things/people he was mentioning. That's how you know you've spurred someone to learn. Thank you for posting. Looking forward to your other videos. Near the beginning of the lecture, you speak of how we got here. This reminded me of a quote: "How did I get here? Somebody pushed me. Somebody must have set me off in this direction and clusters of other hands must have touched themselves to the controls at various times, for I would not have picked this way for the world." -Joseph Heller
i took out my notebook to re-learn it cause I felt he could give me more insight. lol
This has really helped me! I'm going to be going to college soon and want to study Sociology- This has certainly erased my doubts on whether I'd like it or not.
Hannah, I have just come across your comment 7 years after you submitted it! How did it go for you at college? Did you go into a related sort of work? I have only recently taken up the subject at 71 years of age. I really hope it went well for you, and that you have a happy life. God bless you!
@@williambunter3311 Wow kudos to you for going back to college at 71 years of age, how is it going for you going into your second year?
@@MrDsk777 Thank you, D K for your kind message. I have not actually returned to college, but I purchased a good-level distance learning/online course, and several textbooks. I enjoy learning about a number of subjects. Since my previous comment I became very interested in Geopolitics, and was astounded to learn how strongly geographical features influence political decisions by the world's governments. Tim Marshall has written two amazing books on the subject; 'Prisoners of Geography', and 'The Power of Geography'. He can be found discussing this subject on You Tube.
The most important area of study for me is the study of the bible, which I have studied for forty years plus. So many prophetic and eschatological teachings in the bible can be seen to have occurred exactly as predicted, and are unfolding unmistakably today. For example, one has only to look at the build up of arms factories in Syria and the Persian Gulf area over the past decade, by Russia and Iran, to see how these countries, together with Lebanon, Sudan and Libya and a number of other countries in the region surrounding the Holy land, are planning and preparing to invade Israel. Turn to Ezekiel chapters thirty eight and thirty nine to see this foretold in detail. Read also what the outcome is going to be! You will be well ahead of all the current political journalists and commentators!
Note also how the world of the cashless society is being promoted as international banks deal in Bitcoin and virtual currencies, and see also how the one world government is being formed, as foretold by the apostle John in Revelation chapter thirteen, where the coming world dictator is referred to as the beast from the sea, and his right hand man as the beast from the land. The new world order, being enticingly advertised as 'building again better', is coming soon. And it won't be pretty! Safety is only to be found for any individual in the Lord Jesus Christ (Rev. 3 v10). For the world as a whole the day of grace is very soon to give way to the day of judgement. But it is not yet too late for any individual to find safety in Christ.
I wish you well D K. Thank you again.
@@williambunter3311 100% agree! And it's the only real exam that you've got to pass!!🙂
@@MrDsk777 I've given you a thumbs up brother. You've really made my day! God bless you. See you in the glory!
As a senior applying to Universities in the US with major of sociology and media studies, this OPENED course is amazing. Professor Harvey Molotch's teaching is more than intriguing! Definitely finishing this course in the coming weeks.
UA-cam is educating me
hooray
I went to college. It was expensive. I was a sociology major. *I am only now learning about the existence of C Wright Mills.* I want my money back.

True story
Same. Watching lectures on topics that I have classes for coming up!
Love the teaching style of the professor. Open education for everyone!
I love this lecture. I’m taking sociology online class I couldn’t get the motivation
me too!
me three!
Yeah me too! I am doing a assignment.
I'm writing an essay and have total mind block
Interesting introduction into a broad and fascinating field of study. As a multiracial individual finally striving for higher education, it was incredible to hear how such blatant racism and classism dictated much, if not all, admissions into such prestigious schools in the past. These are definitely situations I've been aware of for a while but to hear it put so poignantly just reaffirms my understanding that even the prime educational institutions and intelligence arenas undergo the same evolutionary tribalism as any other in-group/out-group dynamic. Thank Logos for affirmative action and the internet! 😂
at least youre interested in stoicism... too bad you dont actually adopt its philosophy.
@@neuxellI hope you've grown in the 4years since you posted this comment
I've studied sociology for 20 years and I'm 36. I can tell you this....the social racial operation of oppression is all invasive. It is absolutely one of the worst (if not the very worst) social issues you could find in the scope of sociology as a social phenomena, or social problem. The fact there are many white sociologists who do not highlight this as their findings, means they are complicit, an ally to the social force, knowing how invasive the problem is and not highlighting it enables covert operation. Like this man said, sociology involves all aspects and every area of human activity...including psychology. I am content with the fact that sociology is my life's study and I study everyday, and sometimes all day. Sociology is such an important field of study and pertains to the very essence of our lives that sociologists are doing a disservice to society by letting the study appear as 'just another course at university'. As it was said, "sociology is in a league of it's own, but is connected to everything else".
I am a engineering grad but keenly interested in sociology. This lecture is really informative and interesting
wow
im on the same path as you, what do you do now
“I'm not anti-social. I'm just not social.”
the word for u is asocial.
easy
I am just beginning to study sociology, and I found this lecture to be very engaging. :)
+Eveliano Evelian it was probably the first video I watched on the subject and did give me a jumping off point. Over a year ago. I take everything with a grain of salt. *shrug*
Richard Jimenez Guaman Brilliant! May sit in on your lecture series? If NYU has him then He has proven he is what they are looking for otherwise he would have been fired or not hired in the first place. Maybe you should apply to replace him or to possibly teach a section.
any updaties on you my friend ?
This is one of my favourite course series on UA-cam.
Thank you for the lecture. I silently listened to the whole hour lecture, and I have to say...that your right on many things, You have good points like sociology deals with relationships and how it effects social behavior. It's like Psychology, but instead of working on one mind, your working on the societal mindset on how we think. And how society functions. I can't wait to hear more on Sociology.
What happens when a discriminated Minority becomes the Majority? Do they behave any differently from the Majority? Shockingly the answer is NO!
The Minority will now embrace the same hate as the Majority and continue the abuse!
What is disturbing is that Sociologists refuse to study this facet of humanity
This is definitely helping me with my sociology class, especially with online classes. This is helping me so much!!!
@@Thedreamer20015 Can I ask you a question about Sociology? Why is the Dichotomy between the Minority & Majority not being studied?
We know that people behave differently when they are in a mob vs when alone & here we see the diff between being part of the majority(mob) vs the minority(single)
But other areas do not seem to be studied
For eg I was told by a black colleague that I was going to hell - works don't matter, all that matters is belief!
Change the word belief to skin color & suddenly the black man would be lecturing me on how we should judge people based on who they are as people, not for the color of their skin
And yet the religion he belongs to says, "God" doesn't care for who we are as people, only our beliefs, our religion
That was the fate of Jews under Nazi Germany - who they were as people did not matter, only their religion mattered & that got them dumped into gas chambers in hell
And we see my colleague - a black man - openly siding with Nazis and Racists when it came to religion - well, now he was with the Majority religion! And his views changed accordingly
I have written to so many publications, academia, but so far none have replied to me - what is going on?
@@ramaraksha01 I don’t actually know. That’s actually a rather good question ahahaha. I might bring that up in my next class. I can definitely see that being a very relevant question especially right now where race is a massive focus of the public.
@@Thedreamer20015 Thank you so much - I would be curious to know what the Teacher and your fellow students say
This dichotomy is no secret
We see this with Muslims - here in the west they are a minority and tell us that we should not judge them based on religion
They are people just like us, they want the same things as us, we should treat all people equally
Wonderful words - no one disagrees with those views
And then we go to any Muslim-majority country say Pakistan and now we see the same people throwing religion in our faces - all the laws changed to favor Muslims, non-Muslims abused as 2nd class people and no where to be found - whether it is in govt, business, entertainment - it is religious discrimination in your face!
The change happens so quick & amazingly they are not even aware of it!
How is this possible?
Where is the education? the intelligence?
Are we this easily brainwashed by religion?
Please think for yourself. And as you read through the comments either before you view this lecture, while viewing or after viewing formulate your own opinion and not allow others to force you to love or hate it. This applies to my comments as well.
it inspires me. Sociological imagination. our perspective depends on where we are, that. we need imagination to look at social facts widely.
OMG thank you for making that clear
so interesting, am so blessed to meet this professor and now sociology is becoming easier for me. just scoring high in my exams
This man has a beautiful way of lecturing. This is perfect….. such an amazing lecture.
Sociology is fucking BEAUTIFUL!
A nice narrative and made easy for the fresh students.
These are some bomb lectures. Professor keeping it real.
THANK GOD if there is ONE! Finally someone can explain it in such a way that most people in MY EVERYDAY LIFE could not explain. The concept of Humans and Organizations! I just need some structure. Finally! Someone has the GUIDELINE! Are there Cliff Notes as well!
You should also take the 41 video playlist from IIT KANPUR it shows the religion parts they block out from the USA. God is not real! It's Marxism theory of religion
This is my last year before I get my bachelors in Sociology and he has done a better job explaining/teaching the subject than my past professors. I'm learning even more! lol, not but seriously watch the videos if you need to comprehend sociology! 10/10 Recommend.
I love this lecture very much. I am very new for this field but I would love to learn more as I want to see a positive change in the community.
His way of speaking is fantastic
Thanks for this! I'm going to university in September and wanted to know what a lecture might be like... very interesting too!
this is great. It amazes me that the SI is being used as a focus for a class. When it first appeared we read it under the covers and discussed it in the coffee shops. The "academic" sociologists just didn't know where to place Mills. And of course he took some of them to task for being somewhat irrelevant to actual society.
I have really bad ADHD so trying to pay attention to this entire hour-long video and retain all the information he is giving throughout it is near impossible for me. I literally have to rewind every 5-20 seconds and I'm still confused and overwhelmed and I don't understand what a triangle/ knowing contexts for things have to do with sociological imagination. This is literally only the first week of class too I'm so screwed.
Hello. I too have ADHD. How do you deal with yours? I myself take some vitamins and tranqulizers. It helps a little.
I think I have it too but I was never diagnosed with it, it kinda scares me to find out if I'm right or not, Lol. Though I noticed I can concentrate better if the topic really interests me and if I take some breaks after a while
This is an amazing video. If I win the lottery I'm going back to uni to study sociology. Fingers crossed!
He DOES sound like Woody Allen, and he's really funny in that dry way.
I am currently taking Intro to Sociology at Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmar Ca. I find this professor very interesting.
+bellamimi . Hi, am a freelancer and I can be of help to you more especially in handling your assignments. If you could be interested, kindly link up.
I’m loving to learn this way!! Thank you!
What happens when a Discriminated Minority becomes the Majority? Do they behave any differently from the Majority? Shockingly, the answer is NO!
The Minority will continue the abuse of the Majority
What is even more disturbing is that no Sociologist will study this facet of humanity
Yup, I'm here again, love watching and rewatching your lectures professor.
I’m a ME major I completely agree about sociology being the center piece of many disciplines. We have to share ideas with different people absorb different ideas from others. And the industry I wanna work in involves a lot of communication and designing
I'm going back to college I'm an ex-felon spent most of my years behind bars been through the wringer and I am going to smash it when it's my time it will be major in sociology I have credits from when I was 21 years old
For a very long time, I majored in Sociology, but there was no major for it in the college of Education. There was a major in History so I was able to use that for a major.
I have a sociology exam this Friday (it's sunday) and I know literally nothing. I'm crying and trying to cram 5 chapters into my head
@Elegant Oprah I did. Turns out he used the same questions from past quizzes. I got all the questions together and went over them until I memorized them all.
So I got a really good grade and got an A in the class.
Awesome job!!! You were interisting, funny, and very easy to not only watch but also listen to.
The study of society is becoming more and more up to date.
Man this professor keeps roasting everyone, and leaving the earth scorched with their ashes. Its funny hell.
I love this lecture and the way he teaches!
Although he does not begin each of his points with a literature review, his insights about college admissions, IQ, and social class were very nicely contextualized and quite interesting.
Thank you NYU. this is helping me with my assignment a lot. God bless!
love these free lectures! Democratization of education!!
I love watching his lectures.
The most complicated and very useful Science
Way better than my Sociology Professor. Way more articulate and informative. Maybe I should attend a REAL college.
Uh uh uh uh this guy needs to take a public speaking class wtf I can't listen to this for free I can't imagine having to pay for it
This is a goldmine! I'm taking on-line classes, it's always nice to be able to have some things explained. Sadly some of these cats are just wackos, smart wackos but wackos none the less!
Thanks for sharing this interesting lecture with us.
That awesome I learn a lot form the video. Thank you sir
he reminds me of Ross from friends lol
tf how on earth did you figure out that
Woody Allen
OMG I WAS ABOUT TO COMMENT THE SAME THING
Now I can’t unsee this and I’m pissed. Fuck you...!!
Yea, but he didn't mention Ross' profession: Evolution. hhhhhh
My teacher teaches this great subject in Hindi , I am glad I found this lecture otherwise would have been lost
a fabulous Woody Allen doppleganger professor
Lacks some jew, ha ha.
Wow, moving straight into activism. I came here to learn science, man!
CW Mills was a hero of the new left and since this is about one of his top books, it would be only natural for the professor to give Mills' viewpoints which would be with a left wing intent. Unless of course, the professor should have taken a neocon stance on Mills and trashed him. The professor did a good job in explaining what the sociological imagination is from the viewpoint of Mills and how Mills looked at the world.
whyme760 Exactly.
Suggest alternative reading plz.
Is there a syllabus available for this course? Can someone add a link to the video?
I want this guy as my sociology lecturer
very interesting lecture.
I heard nothing on the "States of Revenge," in that there appear to be States of rage and hate. Periods of malice on the way to healing or not? The danger I see is folks at any given time and in critical spots going through these more critical states of revenge and hate naturally on the way to healing or not. Most don't act but when we/I do,it can be catastrophic and we are honesty not having a conversation about it, when necessary. During the negative state of the mind. I hope that makes sense?
Fuco will cry? Good job. You're obviously are the savior of sociology..
I didn't understand why technique of geographic distribution didn't work. He said that they were getting the wrong kind of people. Why? Can someone explain?
Because they then accept people who wouldn't have met their criteria beforehand or it wasn't impacting their numbers enough.
This guy, is not boring at all! haha unlike my other professor.
very good lecture on the basics of sociology.
Perhaps biography and history interplay is exact way to understand the subjectivity and laws of the motion of history. For it intersects power, time and space. It is what sociological imagination is all about.
Excellent lecture. The lecturer looks very similar to Dr Melphi's psychologist on the Sopranos.
Confused and I disagreed about the hierarchy did Booker T. Washington put the science program on his back at Tuskegee
great lecture
aa
if this dude is still teaching he probably felt ready for online classes
great lecture... please post more if possible from this professor in particular!
Great alliteration, bud.

He's Richard Belzer from law and order

This is an awesome lecture!
Very interesting indeed .
I like this teacher better. My teacher uses a lot of big words.. just because he learned those words, he gotta use them ? He's from Puerto Rico and likes using big words , even the ones I have never heard.
I am watching because of sociology is my optional subject

Revisiting this course
Thanks for this lecture.
definition: "sociology is a discipline that expands our awareness and analysis of the human social relationships, cultures, and institutions that profoundly shape both our lives and human history."
So imagine my surprise when I took this course and found several times more content in the realm of gay sex, it's history, power dynamics, etc. etc. than there was on the role of men within society, male culture, heirarchies, etc. In fact, the male half of the species, or at least the straight portion, is largely ignored in the course so far (I'm on #16 so far, which is mostly about homosexuality) except in so much as they oppress and otherwise mess with females and people that don't fit societal norms.
I think it's much more accurate to call the course "Introduction to the Progressive Mindset", as you'll find all the favorite progressive subjects.
And I don't say that as a bad thing. I highly recommend the course for the vast majority of the population that aren't progressive but find themselves forced to conform to their social norms under threat of sanction or unemployment. Mine fields are much easier to navigate with a map.
The Jewish migration and quotas for Jews in those East Coast schools were in the 19th century, not the 20th. That is why Chicago attracted a large contingent of Jews in its earliest years because Chicago had no quotas for Jews.
My favourite sociological study is Eurocentrism
i love this guy he seems awesome
beautifully delivered!
I got this introduction many things that I have interested
Thank you sir Excellent lecturer
Falling asleep halfway through..... Moving on
