When You're Right on the Edge

Chris: My name is Chris Gorthy, and I’ve had the pleasure of doing the Gauley almost 30 times.
Dave: My name’s Dave Kingshott, and I knew I wanted to do whitewater rafting again and again after an amazing trip on the New River at spring flows.
Chris: You know you start on the river, you’re nervous, you don’t what to expect.. You hit that water, right? You’re like, ‘What did I get myself into?’ I think by the time we hit Pillow [Pillow Rock Rapid], I’m like, ‘I am all in.’ From that point on, I’ve put a trip together since 2004 that’s averaged probably 24 people. It’s coworkers, it’s friends, it’s family, it’s friends of friends. I’ve got people that the only time I see them every year is on my rafting trip.
Dave: When you’re right on the edge, you’re nervous, you’re excited…but there’s no time for any of that. You become one with the boat, the paddle and…exhilarating’s not a good enough word. But the things that make an adventure are not only the thrills, but the memories you take-the people you did that adventure with.
Chris: We’ve had close to 400 people down the river, just in my group in the almost 20 years I’ve been doing this. I’ve never had anyone say, that they were upset that they did it, or mad at me because they did it.
