    I am a little late to the party here but I am also new to machining. I made one of these before looking at your video and only did one thing differently. On yours, the screws always push the tool off center. When I made mine, the screws always push the tool toward the center. If I want to use a smaller tool, it still will be centered. I don't know how much difference this makes. It just made sense to me. I enjoy your videos!

    Nice job on the fly cutter. I love the wide cut of a fly cutter but hate the flying chips.

      Yep, them chips go everywhere is you don't put up some kind of shield. Thanks for stopping by.

    I thought cutting through rust is a bad idea. Maybe its better to make heavy first cuts to cut mostly metal rather than rust.
    thanks for the video.

    That's a champ Lee! :) Very nice job of converting a gnarly piece of round into a new tool.

      That material makes a mess of the lathe, but at the price ($0), I can afford a little clean up time.

    Lee what are you using for cooling mist, bought or built? thanks for the videos!!

    • @MrPragmaticLee
      @MrPragmaticLee  7 років тому

      Paul Sprute My setup was purchased from an eBay seller for about $12. I had to add the ball valve (~$6) and the magnetic stand was one I had. The air hose came from the local "box" hardware store, Lowes and was $5 for 25 foot. The hose fitting is 8mm, but 5/16 hose works fine. It's a simple siphoning system and so far seems to work really well. Thanks for stopping by.

    May I ask where you bought or made the fly cutter tool with the insert? I can't find them on the internet anywhere.

    • @MrPragmaticLee
      @MrPragmaticLee  6 років тому +1

      Mark Harris Search eBay for metal lathe left hand turning tool. Mine was part of a 5 piece set of turning tools. Mine is a 12 mm (1/2”) set.

    What coolant are you running through your mister?

    • @MrPragmaticLee
      @MrPragmaticLee  7 років тому

      It's what Fastenal sells (FMT), but they only sell by the 5 gallon bucket & 55 gallon drum. I bought a quart from a guy to give it a try. I'm mixing it 25:1. This project was the first time I used the misters so I'm still evaluating the coolant. The biggest thing I know about it so far is that it stinks to high heaven - smells like burnt rubber before it's mixed. Doesn't smell bad while in use though. I'm watching for any rust on my equipment, etc before deciding if I want to buy more. Thanks for stopping by.

      +MrPragmaticLee Thanks for the reply. I just noticed the clear color. I use Kool Mist brand mixed 4.5oz to 1 gallon water. It has a blue color. I have not had any issues on neither my lathe nor my mill with rust using the Kool Mist.

      grntitan1 Thanks for the feedback. I don't like it being clear - may give the Kool Mist brand next.
