I have this running bit about how when I started Muay Thai (~20 years ago) that only die hards would end up going to Thailand to train and compete.. now it seems like the die hards are heading to Myanmar to train and fight lethwei 🤕
Have the big shows explored PPV models? (I do see how they might not be able to crack down on online plagiarism the same way the UFC would however, due to lack of resources) It makes institutional sense to preserve the high-end sommelier (i.e., traditional Muay Thai) as a practiced exemplar of the ideal, because the absence of it as an entry barrier enables the price to be driven down to unfeasibility by everyone flooding the market. (i.e., if there is no traditional MT, then it becomes diluted to the point of everyone's MT and everyone's ruleset qualifying as MT in the minds of people, in some sense). As a musician, I do empathize with what you must be going through here, and your analogies were quite correct for the most part. (Most musicians make a living from teaching music rather than making or performing music.)
PPV is not a model that Thailand as a whole would be into. Thais are very accustomed to being able to see for free (I've greatly enjoyed having Western Boxing matches available for free here, the World Cup was free, etc). I don't think Thais on the whole would watch ONE if you had to pay for it. As a point of arguable fact, MMA is a sport that only upper class Thais watched or knew about for some time because they were the only group that could pay to see it, so it had a kind of gatekeeper appeal and as a sport is still not popular to watch here. When there are shows intended to be PPV, they are pirated like crazy by gambling streamers.
I am curious though, how much does opening a gym cost? I realize actually having one in Thailand would be contributing to the problem as a westerner but I would like to have one. I suppose I could just open outside of Thailand, like the guy in your example.
A few random thoughts viewing this... I talk a lot in the gym and sometimes sparring as well but nothing beats silence when warming up! Funny when you mentioned about marketing and if I understood correctly I instantly thought of a certain female fighter.. What's interesting I also noticed even when fighters are presented you'd have their nationality and ethnicity denoted with the respective flags. Again I guess marketability and familiarisation
Hi, Sylvie. Is it safe to walk/run in Thailand in terms of traffic and crime? Is there a chance someone on a moped can snatch you phone or action camera like it happens in England?
Is it somewhat disrespectful for a foreigner to seek out the more authentic Muay Thai gyms? I wanna train for just a couple days in Thailand but the more I do my research it seems maybe I should just do the "foreigner" thing and go to a big gym and be treated like just another quick buck. I think this way because i dont wanna bother anybody. Im mostly interested in doing krabi krabong out there anyway. Will be at the Thai/Laos border for most of my trip.

It's a huge country to paint with a single brush. Like everywhere, use caution around traffic and keep your awareness up.
@@8limbsUs 💜😃 thanks for your answer.

Is it too late to learn muay thai as a 32 year old?
