Using a plugin like this is what brockhampton do a lot, one of their staple sounds is actually layering different takes and then using little alterboy to create harmonies. Insanely unique and refreshing. Tried it on my own vocals a few weeks ago and it's amazing
This plugin is exactly like SoundToys Little Alter Boy with the Max for Live modulation tools inside Ableton Live
Hi. What Max for Live modulation tools work best for Little Alter Boy? Thanks.
@@RJ1J Any one of the popular ones such as the LFO, Shaper, Envelope Follower, or any other ones that can be mapped to a function to another plugin.
You will see a map button in the Max for Live device, all you have to do is click it and then map it to whatever function you want.
There are endless possibilities.
The only effect i use to manipulate the vocalist are volume and reverb. Pitching f's with their mind 🤦♂️
Wrong. This has Modulation. And Both are different color tones. Alterboy is meant to give you a robotic pitch shifting while this one seems more organic.
Alterboy is probably better in tone but seems like you can do a bit more with the vocal blender.
UA-cam has been advertising this to me a for a few weeks now.
I'd love to try it out. The only problem is that whenever I open my mouth to sing a child dies in Africa.
Y’all in the comments acting like he doesn’t know about soundtoys 😂😂😂😂
I like some Wave products, however, their copy protection needs to be addressed. I upgraded my motherboard the other day, and now Waves thinks I'm a pirate. Arrrrr!
This stops me from buying them.
If you changed the motherboard, it's a different pc. If you licensed for a single pc, you are SOL.
@@rich1051414 I have an iLok for such a circumstance. Waves used to play nicely with that.
@@rich1051414 no just message them and it will be sorted out in a matter of hours. Minutes if you call.
@@patrickcarter1820 complaining on a UA-cam video they’ll never see sounds like a better solution
I worked with an artist a few years ago (livesound touring) that preferred to have the tuned vocal in his right ear and the dry in his left (on in ear monitors). It was odd to hear but he preferred it so we went with it.
Absolutely yes to having effects monitored, especially when they are dramatically different than the original audio source. It affects the performance as it makes out feel like you are using a different instrument (source + effects).
Awesome that you reviewed this so early on! Was planning on buying it today and happy to watch this first!
any advice on getting STL tone lab amp simulator 'trial' to work in REAPER? can't get it happenin.
I got the plugin a couple days ago. It says you can use it for live performances. Can somebody please tell me how you are supposed to use it it “real time”? I placed it on a Reaper track and I practice singing to backing tracks on my iPod. My iPod runs into my USB mixer. So when I try singing with this plugin activated on a Reaper track it applies the fx to EVERYTHING! The songs coming in through my iPod are getting the Vocal Bender effect so I can’t use it for live singing. Anyone know the solution?
7:20 Hmm, I feel like it does the same thing as the stock pitch correct plugin that comes with cubase
I monitor with Waves Realtune turned on and once I get my takes I get rid of it for manual tuning. Why? Because I can hear the rub between my voice and the tuning algorithm when I’m either sharp or flat! So it gives me little nudges to sing the notes more accurately.
I'd be interested in how well this does with group recordings....for example having only one mic and using it to put a subtle effect on it after. Or even to pitch shift a guitar. How well does it handle chords for example....might have to test that
Dang. Had promised my self to do not buy another plugin. woke up this morning, saw this review, and bought it.
Love your reviews man. Thnx!
Little Alter Boy - SoundToys is very good. Jacob Collier used that on his recent work and it sounds amazing.
Check it out if you want to create unique vocals.
there is a video of jamie lidell jamming with little altar boy. its an amazing plugin that sounds phenomenal in the right hands.
This is very similar. There are less artifacts on this plugin than Little Alter Boy to my ear, which is good or bad depending on what you are looking for.
EXACTLY! Instantly came to mind as soon as I got the announcement from Waves
@@everybodyhasoul5438 Yes artifacts for sure and I found that the vocal has to be sung with less dynamics in order to have less artifacts. Also mic has to be experimented (type and proximity) with as well. If your trying to create organic sound its possible with working it. I think with EDM and other less organic music little alter boy is perfect but I will try the new waves plug to compare as it could be better. Not sure though.
Little Alter Boy was a good idea. But didn't sound good to my ears. This one sounds better and you have a little more useful functionality. I recently sold my full Soundtoys Bundle as I never used anything.
Can we get a direc live vs. Sonarworks reference 4 vs. Audiovero acourate comparison please ???
Pretty surprised about some comments about Waves. Their success speaks for itself. I do not use Waves only, but do not want to miss some of their plugins and their customer service is awesome, once they spent more than 4 hours to help me with an issue on phone. Rarely I had issues with Waves plugins, never cpu or latency or loading or crashing issues like some other plugins from other developers. Waves WUP is not good, though, and of course not every plugin of such an established developer is for everyone
Mad 😡 they don’t have an V11 version of this. I bought it and the plug-in doesn’t work on my system. I get the black screen.
such great energy!
Niiice I was just looking at this! Thank you!
have you checked out all the Analog Obsession plug ins they’re free
i would love to see your opinion
nothing to do with this pitch plug in just saying
Wow, I really liked the plugin. I think I could use it for many projects. I'm currently using Little Alterboy, but the generous amount of latency it introduces causes quite a few problems when creating music. Many times, I have needed to hear the effect in real time, in order to adjust the vocal performance to the effect, but it just can't be done. I have to record without the effect (deactivating the plugin, due to the latency issue), then activate the plugin, listen, and after all off that, just be able to decide, and go again a lot of times. I find it very interesting what Waves proposed this time. Thanks for the video!
Did you check if it actually is zero samples latency? Little Alter Boy always declares 1ms latency. I seem to recall that it was a technical limitation of this type of processing (I'm no expert tho).
Waves is getting way behind the curve....Soundtoys did this ages ago.....
Plus, it sounds like junk to my ears. Ovox would be a much better choice.
Agree. Little alterboy do better job.
@@PeACeY86 i love little alterboy!
@@redlettersky do you know why little alterboy does something weird with the phasing of the vocals? been struggling for a while with that :( other than that its great
@@hithere4289 I have this problem aswell. I've updated it to the latest version aswell, but sometimes there is some phase cancelling going on
Do you produce modern music? These type of plugins is in another ball park from alter boy. Alter boy is old and out of modern production. PA also have way more modern stuff. I started to use these new kind of plugins in my own productions and it's way more interesting.
why would you push the formants up on a high pitched vocal?
I like Little AlterBoy from Soundtoys more.
But if you don't have either. Right now which would you buy? This plugin way cheaper.
I can do pretty much the same with AlterBoy, plus with all the automation possibilities with Reaper this plugin doesn't seem to have any extra features anymore. Plus SoundToys don't charge you for version updates like Waves, so yeah, I see absolutely no reason why I personally would buy this. Maybe someone else would.
I have the Little Alter Boy too and the controls are easy to get to what sound you are going for.
Review Weiss ds1-mk3 from Softtube?
I just received the promotional email about this. It looks perfect! Have a great day :)
Zero-ish latency for Pitch Correction is possible since quiet a while in two different styles. You got to go Waves Soundgrid with a Server and then have Waves Tune Real Time running, or you go with UADs Solution and having Antares Auto Tune run on Sharc DSP inside Apollos with near zero latency . It depends on your demandings in sound, Scene recallability and controllability, from a live sound console for instance, which one you should use.
The formant plug in in Logic Pro actually makes a singer sound really soulful if dropped down about three notches. Works particularly well with a female voice. Good for doubling tracks or building up a unison chorus part. Going too far creates ugly artifacts and going high pitched to any degree becomes cartoonish. Also best to have this type of plug in first in line in your effects chain.
"Out of tune", my fav plugin
hah, "thats like some distortion"... you are right. distortion essentially adds more harmonics and using formant upshift just brings the harmonics higher with keeping the fundamental alone. so you have fundamental and two sets of harmonics, hence the distortion likeness
I really wish you'd also show a few of the presets when you do reviews.
It's easy to make a terrible mess with most plugins when you don't know what you're doing, it would be good to also hear what can be done by users who know how to get the best out of it.
I really wish you didn't retire from the All Blacks. Best of luck with your new career.
@@conorm2524 Cheers mate 🤞
Could you please review Al Schmitt’s new plugin from leapwing audio I would love to hear your thoughts on it
I also want that review💯
Do you review Mixes?
SoundToys Little Alter Boys does also have such link button between the knobs for Pitch and Formant.
Waves essentially said the Ovox is now out of date. So instead of updating Ovox they just come up with a new plugin. I sometimes don't like the way Waves creates thousands of plugins rather than perfecting and updating their older plugins. The plugin does look like you can do interesting things. But they sell it as the "now" sound. So buy this plugin and use it until this music trend is done? Just asking questions that I'm thinking about.
Got this plug-in for 34$ till February 28 u can still get it so don’t waist time people
i think this is the first time ive ever seen "posted 59 seconds ago"
5:00 other waves plugins like the L1 limiter does that as well
Should I get this or Little Alterboy? 'Cause it's like 65$ difference
this one is real-time "zero" latency. For that alone, I think I'll end up buying this one. It's more fun to mess with sounds as you perform them - as opposed to tweaking after that fact, which this obviously allows for as well. But in realtime someone can develop the idea before fiddling with the knobs. With Alterboy it's ALL after the fact.
I've both and tend to using this one more than alterboy. i don't use it for wild fx but for sculpting normal singing. it's a bit more work to get subtile effects or convincingly altered voices but can be done with less artefacts and less hiss.
and it's way more powerful, too.
@WhiteSeaAudio Can you Please review the “Focusrite Fast Compressor”
and can you use that track Sandstorm By Darude
My go-to for live pitch bending, but I usually switch it out for a different one after recording.
allot of reggaeton singers here in latin america record with autotune on the headphones... so basically they learn to sing with it just like a guitarrist would learn how to play with X pedal
Looks very much like LITTLE ALTERBOY.. wish it sounded like one!
Modulating the formant with incoming pitch 😮 Genious
Reminds me a bit of Manipulator & Iwish from Polyverse but with a bit less features, it even links pitch and form as Iwish, if you found this interesting you might wanna check those two.
keep making theses kind of videos !
I'm actually thinking of making less 😳
Unpopolar opinion, reaper already got a more powerfull alterboy inside. Reapitch can add more layer of pitch and formamt with indipendent algorythm volume and Pan 🤭
(for free)
This needs to be an upcoming @ReaperMania video, if it's not already!
@@StudioLams reapitch is an oldplugin, maybe there's already a video about it
latency free is interesting.
It's not the only pitch plugin without any latency for live use, the is also a plugin called Manipulator by Polyverse music.
It costs a bit more but if you get it on a sale then it's really worth it. It has a tone more features and a lot of presets!
Also, it is super performance friendly!
Leuke review van de plugin. Was wel nieuwsgierig naar een combi van de originele zang met de plugin daaroverheen. Het knopje to go to is "mix". In je review voelt dat knopje zich ondergewaardeerd, want niet gebruikt ;-)
Alle gekheid op een stokje, ga door met deze informatieve video's 👍
For resynthesizing vocals you should check this feature of IL Harmor. For standard pitch shifting this is surely a thing to go. But this is a feature most DAWs already have built-in.
Very good review
Would love to see you react to the SSL Native plugins bc they're on sale for $50 compared to other SSL clones
Try it before a reverb, octave down reverb on snare is big
Waves never bring anything new to the table
Well, they created the first eq plugin 👍
I think I might like it.
2:15 I use to do this all the time, it works even with logics pitch correction and most other p-correction plug ins I know. vocalists I know like to experiment/hear the effect in real time

Live pitch correction has been a thing for a very long time (20+ years). AutoTune was one of the first on the market for both studio and live use (as hardware).
As a vocalist, yes: hearing effects live while I'm performing/recording will inform my performance.
Could you please review Biggifier by WA
it's really cute how less you know about plugins like that :D so many videos where you've shown off knowledge i could only dream of, like about all types of analog compressor characteristics. but now a little vocoder and you only start to wonder now about things like what happens if a singers hears themselves on headphones with autotune, or what the usecase of a robotic sounding tuning plugin is, because that's the kinda stuff i am really familiar with in my own music. btw you should really try if snding midi messages to plugin could solve the issue with automation being unsuitable for writing melodies. often that works in such plugins
@White Sea Studio You talked at 7:23min about making a choir out of the main vocal. In cubase 11 (and previous) you can do that in an a few minutes with onboard tools. the plugin seems cool, reminds me on the plugin "quickquack pitchwheel" funny name i know , but its real ;)
You know you can do subtle stuff like chorus and octaving (for pitched reverbs on a send for example) with a bit of character with these sort of things which can be very relevant in mixing context.
Interestingly, T-Pain and Future always record their vocals with the auto-tuned signal in their headphones
source: pitchfork.com/features/article/how-auto-tune-revolutionized-the-sound-of-popular-music/
everyone does that in the hip hop industry
Just tell me it works, unlike Waves UltraPitchShift, which basically never ever works given it can't seem to track for shit. For some reason it's really hard to find formant-shifters (or at least I've had difficulty).
Since I don't see the answer to your question regarding the use of pitch correction in monitoring and live performances, let me be that guy.
1. There is a hardware unit called TA-1VP by TASCAM which uses Antares Autotune. It is almost a decade old though, so the algorithm is not the latest iteration.
2. Autotune has a low latency mode which can be used for monitoring while recording. The artist can hear himself and play with the effect. For some it is working, others sing even more off-key. So it depends on the artist and what works best for him.
3. There is also a version called Autotune Artist and Autotune Realtime as a UAD Plugin. Both are optimized for live performances.
4. If you are missing the hardware, it is still possible to use VSTs in a live context with a laptop and host software like GigPerformer.
As you already read, Vocal Bender is just a clone of Little Alterboy which has been around for some time now. In a musical context it is pretty limited, since it is chromatic scale only. It is basically just a formant shifter rather than a full-fledged pitch correction which can also be done in Autotune. There are not many situations when you would need something like Vocal Bender/Little Alterboy. When you are searching for that creative vocal manipulation I would recommend Vocalsynth 2. But beware, I am just a random dude on the internet.
Next thumbnail: Am I Snake Oil??
You should have played with the mix knob. That would have been very usefull.
Julias cover of Sandstorm was actually pretty good 👌
Vibrato translates apparently. American english would be the "v" sound then I (as in myself), Bra (women's underwear), Doe (female dear).
This plugin screams Little Alter Boy by Soundtoys, but I'll admit it's good on waves as it seems effective and is cheaper (not at full price, but who pays full price for Waves?). I also really like these type of tools, they all sound a bit different and have slightly different algorithms or whatever to handle formant shifting. My goto is elastic pitch, but this does of course have some other niche uses that elastic pitch just does not do. Elastic pitch is very expensive too, but for big edm bass pitch drops and swings I've never found a more transparent plugin.
Good review, I'll probably pick this up. Neat tool.
lol spent most of the video playing with the pitch wheels which are like the same as in the basic pitch thing that comes with reaper and left all the really cool stuff which is really why youd buy it until like 4/5 into the video
TC Helicon has a hardware device with those features and more for live performances and studio use. Nothing like their device out there
Lovely to see your brain explode while exploring the production side 😂 OuO
Yeah Anteres Autotune has also low-latency real time vocal effects. @1:49
Why did you correct that beautiful diminished chord to a pure minor.? They are gorgeous, let them live !!
Nice
"crete chords using it" well there is this tool for a few years now, called octaver which can create chords on the fly
Anyone noticed when you're super early there are no timestamps? Is it just because creators need time to make them or a UA-cam algorithm mistake?
Thats some spacey features 🤩🤩🤩
the fact that its realtime ,im already
impressed by that alone.
goshhh Witse is sooo happy that Waves has finally made something decent hahahha :D
Use the original vocals and layer it with the plugin to add a different type of harmony. Also what if we use it on the beat itself to change the entire sound of the track. I’m buying that shit today!
ProTools used to be the only way to do the near zero latency on inputs with plugins... auto0tune is well know for needing to be on the input to be able to control it properly live... It allows real creativity.
Like intentionally going very out of key to have a moment where there is more robot like effect when the effect is on it's fastest setting.
I can't afford HDX so I'm looking at the RME Pci-e cards to try to get something the same.
USB will always have so much latency because of how things need to build up before being sent and returned... although, you can get things pretty close to it without the latency being unusable.
Latency of inputs would be a great video... I'm having trouble finding good information on it
lead distortion with this thing may be amazing
With the flatten feature, it might as well be midi controlled and possibly polyphonic to harmonize. Actually, this might be waves take on polyverse manipulator by infected mushroom.
Love your videos, and your way on explaining, just wondering after hearing you mention melodyne 5, havr you any indept tutorial ao this ⭐
Not a big fan of Waves and their business model. However, I like the idea of having an updated version of Little Alterboy with zero latency and more features. I might try this out and it'll probably end up being another plugin I never use like Ovox 😝
Not for me. OVOX is cool with a ton of possibilities. And yes, it's more complex and has quite a learning curve to get the most out of it. This seems like a toy though, especially comparatively. I'm trying to think of a use for this in my music and failing to find one, but I'm more into rock/power pop, etc. But even trying to extend my thinking to other genres, except for just "screwing with" the vocals, I can't think of how this could be used in a practical way.
it'd be cool if you did some snake oil vidoes on the plugins from Black Rooster Audio. They're sort of a cheaper alternative to some of the big plugin companies out there, but they also look really nice. There's also not a whole lot of content out there about them so it'd be awesome to get your take on them
Hello,
Thanks for the review. Good job as always. As already mentioned I think Little Alter Boy is suffice. Vocal Bender might have a few features that Alter Boy does not. But in my opinion Alter Boy does a fantastic job.
