Hi Alison, I agree completely that the theory should be second - when you first start an instrument you just want to get in there and play. When I started the piano years ago the teaching then was theory first and playing second.....bad idea...I hated the theory I just wanted to get in there and play, I know you have to have a certain amount of knowledge about theory before you start to play but not to the extent of putting you off playing. I purchased your first piano book and you explained it extremely well it was so easy to pick up re the bar lines and beats etc..thank you Patricia from Northumberland

Hi Allison - In you humble and professional opinion: Can one still be "a very decent, accomplished, intermediate player" if he or she plays the violin only in the first position, and within the first two octaves; and, nevertheless, is able to play the violin with “feeling, phrasing, vibrato and all that good stuff" within those limited perimeters? 🤔🎻🎶

Erm...possibly, but the scope of pieces will be very limited, therefore, the feel, tone and flavour are going to be quite immature in comparison to something with more to it. You certainly can be good at the basic stuff, but thats all it ever will be and sound.

@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Thanks Allison. Your tutorials as amazing. BTW: I’ve been playing the violin for nine years. Due to time constraints, that is, dividing my time with 19 other instruments (brass, strings, woodwinds and percussion) it’s by design that I’ve only learned to play the violin in the first position, and within the first two octaves. Incidentally, I find that I can play all lyrical tunes and hymns in the first position; which has always been my objective in learning to play the violin. Due to these self-imposed limitations, I consider myself more as a fiddle player who plays in one position as opposed to a violinist who potentially plays in all 14 positions with lots of vibrato.

@@christophertsiliacos8958so, you never play the e string above the note b? So the highest note available to you is that b? Just trying to understand.
