Great flight and Great job putting this video together with the cuts to the live tracking and the on air pointers! Only those of us who've flown comp tasks can appreciate how hard it is to do it and still come out in a good position! Congrats! Keep it up! Thanks!
Very nice flight (congrats on a podium position for the day) and even better put-together story. The interludes with the map to show your progress were a very good addition that kept the story flowing. Great effort both in the air and in the "editing room"!
Of the four Ager Open tasks, I think number three is one of my favorites . Great flight ! Your new 360⁰ video system is fantastic. I, and I'm sure others wondered if you would be placing better in the competitions if you weren't having to fiddle with your camera. You seem to be doing better now - even with a Litespeed 😂 Thank you for the great videos.
Yeah, I think this is probably my favourite too. The camera fiddling sometimes helps me relax and concentrate actually... and there are times when I haven't bothered with it too.
I'm always super excited to see your new vid pop up on my feed and when I saw it was 30 mins long it was like a celebration, especially since the weather's been too crap to get a lesson in. Keep em coming, can't wait for the next one
I was twitching too high in those mountains. There was quite some west wind blowing me into them and I wondered if I could get out again. I never even thought about the un-landable part in the valley at that point though!
This is a good idea - I have been thinking about how to show a video with better advice on thermalling. I think the best might not to be to actually film a video, but with diagrams and discussion on the technique.
Thanks for sharing. Can I ask a question about your vario. When you are thermalling to gain enough altitude will the vario calculate the altitude you need to gain to enable you to fly from current location to another location based on your glide ratio? Is the glide ratio a constant, or will temperature and air pressure impact it too?
That is an excellent question Justin but it is very difficult to answer. At some point I will be doing a video on this, but in short... If I am flying from one location to another ON THE GROUND - like the final glide to a goal, then generally I know that a 10:1 glide ratio will get me there. This is dependant on a number of factors though. If I am flying against the wind, then I will need to be higher because I lose more height on the way. Also if I fly through an area where there is a lot of sinking air, again I will need to be higher. If I am flying through an area of rising air however, I can set off on that glide a lot lower. On the glide to goal my vario will tell me how high I am and what that glide ratio is. But how to know the other factors like wind and sinking/rising air? That is a judgement I must make based on the ground I will be flying over (for example I might expect a hill to give me some lift) and also the wind strength and direction. This is why in a competition you see people arriving at the goal ridiculously high (meaning they have been over conservative and by arriving high it means they are not as fast as they could have been) or indeed landing just short of goal because they were overly aggressive. Is this what you meant - or did you mean when flying along the cross country course from one thermal to another?
@@MooSurfer Thanks Darren for the explanation. It’s a fascinating subject and I’d definitely love to hear you go into more depth on this on one of your flights. One one of you Ager task flights, I saw you got low and were scratching around looking for lift. Understanding what is going through your mind, eg looking for birds circling nearby or areas of the ground that you expect to be creating lift would be interesting. As always, love the videos and really appreciate the time you take producing them.
@@justinf1343 I'm guessing you mean task 1. At that point I got really low - I was just flying above likely ground sources like the little village but also keeping an eye on the glider that was below me. As soon as he started turning I knew he was in a lifting area so I flew above him looking for it. What was going through my mind - shit shit shit I'm going to land so early on the FIRST task!
@@MooSurfer yes, on that video it was that point. I was watching and wondering what surface features you’d have tried if you didn’t have a fellow pilot to give you the pointer you got.
Loving your vids Darren. Polite request; please do not use white text on light backgrounds. Most of your in flight (excellent) text was unreadable, I find dark red is good with any background.

Thanks! It does take a bit more time to edit like this too, but I think the result is worth it.

Thanks! I am thinking this is a better way to do the videos, so the viewer can get a full appreciation of what's going on.
It was quite enjoying to watch 😎

I've already begun editing... the next one is probably the best of this trip...
Fantastic Podium Finish 🍺😎👍
Great flight Darren, nice to see Mike again too.
Yes ! I get to see him quite regularly..
Awesome video! Nice edit, especially with all of the helpful captions to orient by. Your comp coverage is so well done.
Thanks Joseph! I'm trying to make it so you can get a full idea of what's going on, instead of just random video clips.
Darren thanks for sharing, I for one was twitching when you had to cross those bad areas, great task.

Brilliant, can't wait
Love it Darren! Great flying mate!
Cheers Trent!
Awesome Darren!
Congratulations Daren superb flying!, Great video to watch with all the info, thanks for making it!.
You're welcome Pete - I'm trying to make them more informative
Great vid of this phantastic Flight
Thank you! I had great fun on this one :-)
Great stuff well done. Thoroughly enjoyable video as well
well done Darren, great flying over some spectacular scenery
Yeah, in one of my favourite places to fly!
Great video again, super quality, and great content. Nice job
very nice
Just amazing!

Thanks - I was very pleased!
It's an amazing flight! Think how much faster you would be if you hadn't gone all the way there completely sideways!?
Ha! Good point, I was thinking this earlier actually. But sideways I still got there faster than YOU! ;-)

They just went dark red!! Amazing 😂
No idea how that happened! But you will see a colour change on my latest video...
