Key Immobilizer and Remote Programming Using Toyota Techstream Software - Toyota / Lexus

- Here's how to program a new Lexus or Toyota key immobilizer and remote to work with your vehicle.
On newer model Toyota or Lexus vehicles built in the past decade, programming a key requires Toyota's Techstream software. It can no longer be programmed manually using the "pedal dance" method demonstrated here:

A spare blank master key was purchased from eBay. Since a blank key cannot be inserted into the ignition, its remote and transponder was gutted from the key shell and inserted into the original master key's shell for programming.
Toyota's techstream software uses a special cable to connect to the OBDII port and communicate with your vehicle's ECU. For a demonstration, see this video:

Once the key is inserted and turned to the ON position, the key transponder wizard is opened in the techstream software.
Follow the wizard to reinsert the original master key, then remove it, then insert the new blank key, waiting 75 seconds for it to be programmed. The key will then be programmed for the engine immobilizer, though the remote will still have to be programmed separately.
To program the remote, you don't need Techstream software.
Simply follow the instructions to open and close the door a few times and turn the key in the ignition to put it into programming mode. Then press and hold the buttons on the remote and the locks will cycle indicating it has been programmed.
The eBay key purchased worked fine for starting the car, however the remote proved to only work intermittently, so buyer beware. Its better to buy a cheap key shell with a blank blade and a used OEM remote and reprogram it for your car than to use the aftermarket transmitters which are hit and miss.

DUDE, you are the first one to point out that the transponder is in the beeper that unlocks the car remotely. I thought it was located under some plastic somewhere. 1:27 saved me from having to buy a cable to use Techstream. I was able to put it next to my old blade off my master key that wouldn't start because I never had the transponder next to it lol. Great video. I just want to tell the viewers that you do not need to use Techstream if you have your master key from before. Ignore every other video if you have a 2004 Lexus es 330 on how to program the transponder. You go in your car with all the doors closed. Next , stick your master key into the ignition 5 times leaving it in at the end. Never turn the key just put it in and out in the off position. Then you open and close your driver side door 6 times while the key is in the ignition. Then you take out your master key (The red security light located under the radio display should not be flashing but be glowing red at this point). You then put your new cut key (The one that you are trying to program the transponder) into the ignition and leave it in, not turning it at all. The red light will start blinking. After around one minute the red light should turn off completely. This indicates that your key has been successfully programmed. You may then take your key out and use it as needed to start your engine. I would recommend pinning this comment to help people
I can’t for the life of it get my (new to us) 2005 ES330 into key programming mode with the 5 key inserts and 6 door openings. Same with an alternate procedure of hitting the gas pedal 5 times and the brake 6 times. I have 2 reportedly original keys for the vehicle (one with remote fob and 1 without). Might both these keys not be “masters”, like the valet key+card ? Is there a way to tell? My Autel 806 Pro unfortunately doesn’t program keys 😢
@@Kai__S My valet key is a silver one instead of black and had no remote unlock and I was trying to program with it. I think its different than the other ones because it wont unlock the glove compartment and apparently doesn't have the chip in it that can program new keys. I used the broken original master key to program 2 new keys with the beep unlock. There is a chip inside them that wont start the car unless you activate them using the master key. So when you cut a new key without programming it wont start the car. I am not sure if the new programmed keys can program new keys. Maybe the keys you have were created when the previous owner lost his keys and used a locksmith and then those 2 keys cant make new ones? I am not sure though. When I realized I was using the valet key and finally tried with the master it was really easy.

The key programming was more simple than the actual key fob lock/unlock. Especially even compared to the long wait time GM requires when programming new keys.

MsBetterThanBlessed To clarify, the valet key will start the car. What it will not do is allow other keys to be programmed. The valet key cannot be the source of the permission for programming new keys.

Not working on my 2006 rx330 using techstream version 10.29.30. bought a used rx330 key fob w oem chip from ebay.
Some years ago, I wanted an extra transponder key. I provided the key code to an Ebay merchant. He shipped a precut key. I simply programmed it in the car with the master key and everything worked great. The price was good and, more important, I didn't even have to set foot in the Lexus stealership...er...dealership. They could also cut the key based on the VIN #.

Thank you for your response. Your are correct,... it should work and probably will work once I get the correct key. My eBay dealer sent the wrong key (electronics). They say the definition of insanity is doing something over and over expecting a different result. I was definitely INSANE yesterday, watching your video and back out to the car..... WoW!!!!!

Hi SpeedKar - great series - thank you. Question - I have a 2008 RX350. have the original master key. Ordered 2 "new" keys from Ebay pre-laser cut. Using a tool - I have the keys matched to the immobilizer - keys start the RX350 just fine. But following both the directions I received with the keys and about 10 other versions - including yours - I cannot get the car into programming mode so that the key is programmed to open the locks remotely etc. Any tips?? thank you!!
+Concierge Autos if your door lock actuators or door open switch are worn it might give trouble. I believe there might be an option in techstream to setup the remote part instead of going thru the "door dance" procedure.
I have the same issue with a Lexus GX470. Could you let me know if you managed to resolve the issue? I programmed the key chip, but can't program the remote buttons on the key.
@MrChad97Z Do it with just the driver’s lock at the handle. No instructions called for that but it brought my LS400 into programming mode, but I ran into the problem where my new chip would not program.
@MrChad97Z Yes, this is for getting the car into “programming mode” to get it to learn the remote. There is a switch, which locks and unlocks all the doors, instead of cycling that, do it at that little indicator on the driver’s door next to the interior handle, cycle it five times.
@MrChad97Z When you press unlock only once on the key/remote, does it unlock only the driver’s door, and then the rest when you press it again? There is something programmed to recognize just that manual lever locking and unlocking, which made it work for me.
Where did you purchase the software? I recently purchased the Toyota Techstream Software Kit with Mini VCI Cable but when I click on the Immobilizer Tab, the Utility Tab is missing so I can't register my new key. It's like the software is missing some functions.

No, I know that it has one. I tried it again last night using a different PC and all the tabs were present, so I guess the software wasn't communicating with the ECU before but now it is. Everything is working fine now. Nice video BTW, Thanks.
After doing some more investigating I found that the Techstream Version 12.20.024 doesn't have all the functionality using Windows 7 so I installed Version 12.10.019 and everything works perfect.
Another thing I have noticed is that when I plug in the cable and connect to vehicle the wizard doesn't automatically detect my vehicle, I have to enter all of my vehicles info including the VIN. Other than this everything is working perfect.
I watched the second half of your video (great presentation by the way)can not program the remote to lock/unlock any tips. Aftermarket keys start the car but for some reason, I am unable to get the fob to program. I have a 2006 Lexus RX400h
Have you found a solution to this? I have the same problem. Maybe because it is an aftermarket key?
Is there a chance that if you don't follow the programming procedure correctly that you can make a mistake which will prevent the computer from being able to read the original key and consequently the car cannot be started with the original key? I read this is a possibility at least with some Toyotas. Are there any risks at all with trying to program keys with Techstream?

On another note:
Do you have a Video on how to reset the the Anti Theft in a 2004 Lexus RX 330 after the car battery is replaced.
The battery died when the car was initially locked, and therefore replaced when the system remembered that it was still locked. That triggered the Anti Theft System. We have since then replaced the battery and are able to disarm and arm (unlock and lock doors) using the Remote Control and the Master Key but can not start the car. We can turn on the ignition but can not start (crank or turn over) the engine. Also the Radio, AC & Fan, and Windows are inoperable. We can only lock, unlock, and turn on the ignition.
Do you or anyone know the solution/procedure on how to reset the system.

Tried programmed via Techstream a new used unlock OEM smart key for 2013 Prius, but at the final step after placing a new key next to the power button and beeped, it never registered at the final step after putting it on passenger seat.

I always worked most of the time for other customers(unless the key as bad with it didn't beep at all). It was interested b/c it actually gave me a beep, but not a second beep after placing it on a passenger seat.

You mean a wireless key? I've heard it can be reused but there's a huge workaround.

Used Smart keys can be programmed too but theres a work around to get them virginized again.

On my older 97' Lexus GS300 I only have a factory spare, and no original master keyfob...I've never had any problems with immobilizer so if I buy a new blank Key fob from Ebay...can I just program only the door lock features, and just have the key cut duplicate instead?? I already have another aftermarket Viper alarm installed. But would just like a nice key fob all in one.

I programmed a smart key on 2010 Lexus RX450 and everything was good except the new key cannot open the truck like the original is. Sometimes this happened on other cars as well but most of the time it worked.

@@speedkar99 I will check it out. From the past with Toyota smart key programming, one key programming step was enough to also program all remote functions. It could have been due to the refurblished remote my client has as well.

I have seen many clone Techstream on youtube. I don't buy clone scan tools because if it breaks who am I going to call in china for tech support or warranty. I see they are pretty cheap but it won't do any programming. I see it works well for you.
The techstream cables work fine for Toyota immobilizer programming. Honda HDS MVCI cables won't work for immobilizer programming though.
This cable has paid off for itself, not to mention I can use the techstream software on any OBDII car (there's a global OBDII mode, I tried it last night on my Honda), so I can access all the engine sensors, graph them and record live data.

I have a es300 2002 lexus. Only with a valet key. ( it can't open the trunk or glove compartment) I bought an aftermarket new key that I cut that seem to be able to open trunk,doors and glove compartment but is not program yet. (it cranks but it doesn't turn on the car)
what should I do? the new key looks a bit longer and comes with the three bottoms. I really want to program this key that seems to be a master key.

I am confused about something. Why do I need that equipment. On some older toyotas you can program the key by just putting the good known key in the ignition and then replace it with the key to be programmed

My version is 13 and it shows NO functions. I can't even see the code for the tire sensor light. But, it claims to hook up. It just asks for vehicle configuration code. Any ideas about that?

Thanks for the video, nicely done. I have a 2008 Lexus RX400h. I bought a new FOB key from Ebay and had it cut. I followed your steps with Techstrem software to program the immobilizer part and it worked with no problem. My car can start and run with new key. Next I tried to program the remote part of new fob. I followed all your steps to program remote. But it did not working. I tried all steps many times. But after step Insert the key into ignition and leave it in the ignition.
Close the drivers door. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF steps my car did not do lock cycle so it did not go to program mode. Any advise. Is it possible to use techstrem software to program remote just similar to immobilizer programming?

Yes techstream can do it. You probably have worn lock actuators.

I figured out how to program the remote part to lock and unlock the car. For some reason the new fob for my 2008 Lexus RX400h can only be programmed using Tech-stream. I found the remote programming part under BODY tab in the Tech-stream. My new fob is programmed and everything works now

do you have a link to get the Techstream and cable? I searched OBD II to PC but they are the whole scanner mostly, or kinda like an adapter with Bluetooth to computer, not sure if any of them can do the immobilizer programming like you did in this video.

I am having trouble trying to program the chip, i was able to register the buttons to unlock and lock however teachstream shows asterik * by immobilizer and couple others. When i first start the program and click immobilizer i get this "Selected system is not responding or not available. Please check the repair manual for applicable systems." Do you know what is wrong? i tried teachstream on windows xp 32bit and 7 32bit. version 12 and 8 of techstream. Is it the cable? its a master key not valet key and it is G chip
I think the only problem I had with techstream not connecting to certain features was on my brother's GS300. The same cable and software worked on a dozen other cars. So I'm sure it's just your car or it's not compatible with the cable.
Worked on a 2008 rx400h. Everything works except the trunk button. Is there a way to program that button? It works on the old remote but not on the new programmed ones. I programmed the remote with techstream
Same with mine... but for some reason i waited a month or so and now the trunk button works!!
hi i have bought a mini vci cable and it comes with TIS 13.00.200 software. on the software i dont see "utility" option to program my 2007 camry key. please help me! thank you!
Try another cable or software? Maybe an older version, or run it on XP
If u only have an engine swap with the immobilizer and everything needed except keys, can you program a key or chip to the ecu to make it run? I need to have this done if there is a way. Like put my ecu in a car and use its organs to program the chip to recognize each other

My friend has a 2003 lexus es 300 and it has a c1336 code and VSC lights are seen on the dashboard ,what could be the problem and how should I fix it ??

I tried doing this on my 07 LX470 but it always gets stuck at the last step (75sec) Saying "Communication error occured between the key and the ECU" Any thoughts?
Hmm sometimes it bugs up, and doesn't work on all vehicles
I figured out the issue. 06-07 models changed the transponder model#. Ebay and Amazon sellers typically sell the ones compatible with 98 to 02 but they claim that it will work upto 07 models.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
ERASE ALL CURRENT REGISTERED KEYS EXCEPT MASTER KEY BEING USED
1. Connect OBD2 cable adapter to vehicle OBD2 port.
2. Connect USB end of ODB2 cable to laptop.
3. Launch "TechStream" software.
4. Click on "Immobilizer" tab.
5. Click on "Utility" button to open the "Utility Selection Menu" page.
6. Click on "Transponder Code Erasure" option.
7. Click the "Next" button in the "Transponder Code Erasure" panel.
8. Insert a registered master key into the key cylinder.
9. Within 120 seconds turn the ignition switch to the "On" position.
10. Press the "Next" button.
11. Remove the master key from the cylinder within 10 seconds.
12. Press the "Next" button.
13. All keys except the Step 8 master key have been unregistered.
14. Click on "Exit" button to leave the "Transponder Code Erasure" page.
REGISTER UP TO THREE MORE MASTER KEYS
15. Go back to the Step 6 "Utility Selection Menu" page.
16. Click on the "Key Registration" option.
17. Insert the master key back into the key cylinder.
18. Turn ignition cylinder to the "On" position.
19. Turn ignition cylinder to the "Off" position.
20. Remove the master key from the key cylinder within 20 seconds.
21. Press the "Next" button.
22. Insert the key you want to register within 10 seconds.
23. Turn ignition cylinder to the "On" position.
24. Press the "Next" button.
25. Key registration complete and new key should now start vehicle.
26. Press "Next" to register another key or "Exit" to end the registration session.

question, I got "Key Registration has failed. The communication error occured between the key and the ECU", any idea on this error? The device I ordered from amazon mini-vci j2534 , comes with the software. It detects my Lexus rx330, but failed for registering additional key.
+Jian Yu Are you sure the key your using is functional and compatible with your vehicle? Perhaps try programming another key out of a Lexus or Toyota with the same chip (swap the chip part into the key) and see if it recognizes it.

I got Lexus LS430 02' president with only 1 key( 2 buttons lock/unlock) and I bought other used key from the same model car (3 buttons lock/unlock/trunk)
When i turn on smart key option under the steering wheel the green LED works fine but i need to put in key to ignition to start vehicle .
When i put used key its show communicate "key is different"
My question is can i programm/add the other used keyto this car? Im using TIS Techstream.

There is a work around to programming used smart keys online somewhere, its not as straight forward as programming a new one with techstream.

+ellc9 If it's a valet key (you'll know if the security light stays lit for 2 seconds after inserting) then you can't program new keys.
