Sauron in disguise in ROP: Totally not Sauron Lord of Subverting Expectations
He literally said “call it a gift” and if you look close you can catch him pause and wink at the camera
@@damienruzco so that's why there was a laugh track and the baseline playing
They seemed to red herring the audience into thinking he was going to be one of the 9 Ringwraiths actually.
I’m here after the second season.
ROP definitely made him Annatar Lord of Gifts.
IMO they are doing a far better job with the source text than most give them credit for.
Not exactly sure how anyone thought staying completely true to the Silmarillion at all points, with no creative license, was going to be a watchable show. There are times that it’s barely readable, much less filled with compelling visuals and in-depth character development that a screenwriter would just be able to copy and paste. But where it is, the show has been faithful. And where it is not, the show remains dedicated to telling the story.

@@Insanity_CrowI mean, the Numenorians lived for hundreds of years before notably aging, and the elves are immortal so it’s quite plausible that he would have never been discovered before it’s too late.
@mileshostetler2469 in the lore he takes over Numenor, and turns them in to ritual sacrificial maniacs essentially, and then caused the land of Numenor to be destroyed by the Gods, due to twisting the Numenoreans and making them believe they had a right to immortality like the Elves had etc.

I think it is interesting that it isnt clear at what point he decided to conquer middle earth, was he planning on subverting numenor if she left him there? Was he genuinely trying to live the quiet life?
Did she inspire him to take up the mantle of dark lord after he had retired or was he always trying to get her to put him in power?

Or did he look just let her think she was doing all that for him? for example, when he was injured, seemingly on the point of death, and Galadriel rode him to the elves, was he truly on death's door, or was this all part of his plan??
You see that's what I can't seem to reconcile.
if A) Halbrandt/Sauron was out in the middle of the ocean purposely to run into Galadriel and start this sequence of events.
or
B) was he truly Fed Up of all the evil he had done, and being honest the whole time, and Galadriel actually brought the lust for power and domination back out of him??

This series did just about the worst possible job, making him an actual decent guy instead of a deceiver, and dumbing down Galadriel beyond repair. The story is so far from what Tolkien wrote at this point that it’s unfixable, and all for the sake of some dumb modern TV mystery box writing that everyone figured out by episode 1.
That's exactly why they did a bad job. A great villain is supposed to be someone you root AGAINST, whether they're likeable or not.
They also made the MC an insufferable prick which adds more salt to the wound.
no you didnt get it. the whole color of the plot was women and people of color representing good and the ultimate villain is a straight white male. it was too obvious what they were going for and did the exact opposite of what they intended. they fired their writers for a reason. there is a reason this show is a flop. the tolkien fandom already knew they would ruin Tolkiens legacy way before the show was officially released and they were right.
