- I was a production assistant at PM Magazine when I heard the radio report that Marty Robbins had died. We had already shot Christmasy, upbeat wrap-arounds for this piece which was about to air. I told our producer that they needed to be re-shot. She said, "You write it." Sandie Newton hosts and this launched my writing career. I never met Marty Robbins but he feels like my friend.
Matthew McConaughey should play him in a film. He has the accent and the looks for sure. Thanks for sharing this!

I can still remember that day when the news on the radio said that Marty Robbins had died. I was just a kid, 10 years old. My father suddenly went very quiet, and was blue and sad for days. I also remember him playing Robbins on cassette-tapes on the car-sterero when we were out driving for years afterwards. My father is still alive, and he has his old Marty-records on vinyl intact.

Got to see Marty at the Grand Ole Opry Ryman 1958 with Johnny Cash. I was 15 at the time. He sang "White Sport Coat" . Saturday Opry was really an experience in those days. People brought their lunch, men would exchange stories in the hallways by the windows, some were drinking moon shine. Memorable times.

Marty had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. Andy Williams called him The Man With The Caramel Voice. Marty was friends with Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Marty's road manager helped Buddy gets his first recording at Bradleys Barn in Nashville, Tennessee.

I'm 22, I discovered Marty around 5-6 years ago and I've loved him ever since. His music is food for the imagination and the spirit, and it makes me happy to know he was an even better person than he was a performer and singer( a tall order for such a great musician.)

I live in Honolulu and got to meet Marty in the 70s and he invited me to drink coffee with him. I feel it was a high point in my life, he was so humble and humorous...a gem 💎 of a person.

Same here. Those songs are very simple musically and require a very refined voice and charisma in order to entertain.

I was a PM field producer and had produced the entire week that included that segment. I think we got the news the day before it aired? Or the same day? I had been so thrilled to do the wraps around the story, had gone to a an old cowboy's farm to do it with him. He had a little western town set up on his place and we sat in his saloon with him and our co-host playing guitar together talking about Marty Robbins and cowboy songs and the cowboy way of life. Marty Robbins had been my fave since I was 5. Mom had an old super 8 movie of me running around the living room on my stick pony with the Marty Robbins album cover leaning against her big console record player. Then we had to suddenly come up with an intro for the story saying "oops, he died after we shot the show." It was awkward. Thanks for sharing this story again.

Marty Robbins and Roy Orbison both had interviews not long before they died (Roy just two days before), where they unveiled plans that they were working on and looking toward their futures. Both of these fantastic artists had amazing pasts behind them and bright futures ahead of them...Taken way too young, and both to heart issues. RIP Marty Robbins, aged 57 (1925-1982) and Roy Orbison, aged 52 (1936-1988).

Like a lot of people I first heard him as a child and the story type cowboy songs had a big big impact as I could visualize the story as he sang it. I am old now but I will always love Marty s voice.

I got introduced to Marty Robbins thanks to my dad, and I have to say that he is truly one of the greatest country singers of all time. His voice was so rich and unique that I strongly doubt if a movie was ever done about his life, his voice could not be duplicated, no matter how hard the actor portraying him tried.

I’m sure I’m not the only one, but I actually discovered Marty’s music on a video game. Many years later I was flipping through some records at a flea market and found his gunslinger ballads album for ten dollars, so I did what any other sensible man would do, and I bought it. I loved every song on that album! That was a purchase that I am so proud that I made to this day. I only recently found out that Marty passed away. I can’t even begin to tell you how disappointed I was to see that. It was also pretty sad to see that he passed away on my birthday. He was a great singer, and a great man! He will certainly be missed on this earth, but his music will definitely live on for generations to come!

I discovered Marty Robbins by accident in 2019. It was my first week in a small Texas border town having pizza at a place called Russos. I fell in love with a Mexican girl. We talked, flirted, and exchanged phone numbers. But then her insanely jealous manager came in all angry at me. I escalated the situation laughing uncontrollably. When it was all over, I went home thinking to myself “wow, Marty Robbins was right about this place!” I have been a fan ever since.

funny thing about the song el paso, the record company wanted him to shorten the song because they thought the song wouldn't get airplay. deejays liked the songs to be 2.5 to 3 minutes long so they could do their commercials. the record company thought the deejays wouldn't play it as much because of it's length. well the song was so popular that they had no choice. the rest is history.
Denis Lessard I wouldn't hesitate to play it if I were a DJ, it's a true classic. Screw the commercials. I know that they help with the finances and such, but they're a total nuisance.

@@people6117 I have been a Marty Robbins fan for 50 years,since I was 5,when my mom married a man who had an excellent country music collection, with "Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs".Later in my early to mid teens,my fandom intensified when I was first falling in love and having heartbreaks and such,Marty was still being massively played on country radio as one of it's biggest stars.He, and his songs,helped me through that period.He died when I was 17,and I grieved like he was a close member of my family.I accepted reincarnation into my spiritual belief system when I was 22.Said all that to say this:About 1991 or '92,I had a dream one night where I saw Marty on the Other Side,he was walking down these steps from a huge columnated building,dressed in a dark suit,carrying a dark briefcase.He wasn't smiling or saying anything,but I got the impression/intuition that Marty was getting ready to be reborn! Then the dream progressed to a ballfield in a schoolyard with 7-8 year-old kids running around,and knew Marty was one of them (I seemed to center on one of the little boys).I don't know why I had this experience,other than the fact that I deeply and dearly loved this soul,and that I know where there's love,there are eternal connections that go right beyond any grave into forever.May our Universal Loving Creator bless and guide you in all you do/Peace

Awhile back I contacted a psychic, or someone whom at least claimed to be, and they told me things that I had experienced that nobody knew about, explained emotions tied around him, etc, and at first it was all correct, and she told me that I was his wife but I was reincarnated, sadly then they started rambling and told me some things that I didn’t really want to believe all though they made perfect sense.
Either way, whether I really was either of them or even a close friend of his in another life, I suppose I’ll never truly know. All I’ve got is the connection and the music of a man from the past. 🫶
@@people6117 Sounds like you are an extraordinary young woman.Just keep following your heart and genuine love (the bible says God is love in 1 John 4.It also has things about reincarnation and cause and effect that weren't removed by the catholics in the 6th century).Also we have all been given by the creator an internal warning system,and that is the feeling that something is wrong.Don't accept ANYTHING that doesn't feel right to you.It's going to take a lot of strength and wisdom to get through these coming next years,but I don't think we'd be here on earth right now if we weren't able to handle it.Much peace and love to you dear

I have always loved "El Paso," but I recently checked out what else is on his "Gunfighter Ballads" album. I was unaware of how many great songs he sang. That album has several songs that I now love just as much. I'm in my 30s btw which is part of the reason why I didn't know about all of his other great songs. This interview was very informative. I'm glad to see that he mostly wanted to be remembered as a good person, and I find it interesting that he seemed to be non-religious.
Hmm. I'm not too sure. I read a recently published biography that taught me a lot. His wife was very religious.
After posting my comment, I did some Googling and came across some quotes in which he talked about having faith in God. And Jesus was in his song "The Master's Call." But yeah, it was the last few seconds of this interview that made me question what his beliefs were, especially considering he's wearing a cross in the last segment.
Maybe someone who knew him can add some insight here. He is certainly remembered as a great person.
I've been a Marty Robbins fan since 1971(I was 5 at the time),when my mom married my stepdad who had "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs"in his record collection.After hearing nearly every song he ever sang,it's my opinion one has to be somewhat near to God to sing the way he did with such heartfelt sincerity,and Marty sang with GREAT heartfelt sincerity.He said publicly once that he prayed to God for his success,and God answered that prayer.Marty recorded one beautiful gospel album "What God Has Done" that I recommend everyone check out.When my time comes I fully expect to see him on the other side and hear his sweet voice in that heavenly choir .................

There may be more to this interview somewhere, but all I have is what made it into the piece. PM Magazine had affiliates in many different cities, all of which shared stories. I was in the Los Angeles office. I'm not sure where this story was produced. Maybe Nashville. But we could do some research!
He had two heart attacks, one round of open heart surgery, and a serious crash as the video said at this point and he looked great! Amazing!

A question for Louise... I remember Marty's obituary that aired on CBS News the night that he died. Dan Rather was the anchor man, and had a rather brilliant review of Marty's work. Just wondering if you know of any way that that could be retrieved and posted? Maybe it is far-fetched, but it was a great piece!

Marty was amazing to me. Rescued me from the streets and gave me a room in a house next door to his office. It was a BIG house, with many rooms AND many struggling songwriters/singers lived there. It is not there anymore. Once in a while Marty would come over and cook Supper for everyone. Believe it or not, Marty had a terrible unbelievable inferiority complex. I know most people will say NO WAY, but YES He did. You would have to know him to see/know it is the truth. He bent over backwards to do anything He could & for anybody. I do not mean to imply by him doing that is inferior, NOoooo. I think that made him SUPERIOR. Thank YOU for responding.

U R MOST WELCOME. I have Google Earth and the building his office was in IS still there. He owned BOTH that building and the one next door which is no longer there. It now appears 2 B a parking lot AND parking for his extension/addition office built in the back of the building that is still there. It NOW is @ what is called Acuff Blvd & 18th Av. I left in 1970. Moved to Florida and a lot changed that I did not know about until years later. I became a recluse/hermit & did not listen to the Radio or watch T.V., so many things transpired unbeknown to me. As I think back, there were many people unknown that I knew at that time, e.g. Don Gibson, Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson, Loretta Lynn. BUT Marty was very famous when I first met him.
