Question though why didn't you use thinning shears/what difference would it make if you used them (would you recommend holding/cutting it differently from what you did in the video)? Thanks Melissa! :)

Thank you so much for this tutorial!
I have layered straight hair, side swept bangs, and I have moved and not found a hairstylist to cut my hair yet. I was dreading trimming my side swept bangs and wanted to find a good tutorial for it, and yours is just perfect. You show and explain everything so nicely, that I was able to have the confidence to go for it.
I had found a bunch of tutorials for side swept bangs but they were all meant to keep the bangs on the same side, and I like switching it up and let it get longer at times.
I have been able to achieve great results both times I watched your tutorial and went for it. I don't do the whole process, only the first part, cause my hair a little bellow shoulder length and I'd never risk messing it up, so I just do the front part respecting the original bangs my hairstylist had cut.
I can't thank you enough for this. Best tutorial ever! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Every time I asked for this hair cut no one would do it because they want to take length off rather than. Sharper slant to meet the end. Not very intelligent. I’ll take this video to the salon next time or do it myself.

    • @lowkeyhairstudio
      @lowkeyhairstudio  6 років тому +15

Theresa Brewer that’s often because some stylists avoid bending the rules or can’t see past the basics. Long over directed layers is the best way to explain it....most stylists just don’t know how to or are intimidated to bend these rules.

I middle of the night (insomnia mixed with a 2 day migraine) decided I had to have long layers in the front, because I have a military ball to go to on Saturday (I realize not one of the things I just said means it was a smart idea to cut my own hair.....) and I want the front of my updo to have a little more softness. I followed this video, and it looks so good! Not too much, not too little, and blended perfectly! Thank you so much, the sharp angle and over directing the hair made a huge difference. My best advice would be to cut longer than you think you want. I decided I could always go shorter, so I thought I was cutting 2-3” below where I thought I wanted, and then once the hair wasn’t under tension anymore, it was actually exactly what I wanted. If I had tried to go shorter from the beginning, it would have been too short.

I have been using your video to cut me framing layers since 2017, always happier with doing it myself because the salons dont always get it the way i want, either make it too thin or too deep and then my face looks square, or too choppy. This is just perfect for me. I do this even after getting a fresh hair cut and it works really well.

My hair was unreasonably long so I ended up cutting off 5-6 inches in the back and 3-5 inches in the front. My hair has so many layers now and has great movement. The shape and length is exactly how I wanted it at it looks fantastic just air drying with some argon oil and tousling mouse for a nice beach wavy look. I keep getting compliments on how it came out and people can’t believe that I just cut it myself. My hair is still really long but it looks so much better now. !!!PRO TIP (from a non-professional)!!! Cutting your hair wet can cause split ends. But for those of us with thick, coarse and/or wavy hair, cutting dry is way too hard. Last time I followed this tutorial I saturated my dry hair with coconut oil and it was "wet" enough to cut and I could get a fine tooth comb through my hair, something I had never done ever. So far, no split ends at all! It does take two shampoos to get the coconut oil out, because you really do have to saturate your hair. I used almost a half cup in my tailbone-length hair.
Thanks again Melissa for the stellar tutorial.

I have never had a good stylist. I have learned a lot though during covid and I am cutting my own hair now even though I have screwed it up a few times. In Dec 2020 a stylist stacked my hair when all I wanted was the last 2 inches layered and lightened up in weight. Instead she chopped and stacked my hair. The shorted and longest layer was a foot apart and my hair was only at the top of my shoulders! I cried for months and here I am almost two years later and I am now almost out of having a "tail" at the end of my hair. My hair is only at the collar bone because I have had to keep trimming the bottom while the top layers catch up. It has been a nightmare. Now my face framing layers have a "hole" area from me messing them up but this video helped me to even it out some and now I just have to let it grow. Your video was very helpful. I need to find a video of yours for cutting the back as I do want a bit of layer in the back. I think your old one from 2016 has it. Thanks so much.

Finally felt comfortable with cutting layers after watching this and it worked amazingly! I have waist long thick hair that was getting unruly and it needed something unmajor to shake it up a bit. Thankyou, this was a great easy to follow tutorial 😄

Am sitting here smiling.... I just copied your video and I look great! Had a long bob, till 15 minutes ago straight till over the shoulder/ collar bone. I cut the center just under my chin, first checked if that length would fit behind my ear, to both sides it does. Then started snipping.... then blow dry... now smiling! Seriously people are going to ask if I went to the salon. Thanx for posting this, you made my day!

Thank you for sharing ... I will definitely do it. I searched for a good detailed video but didn’t find anything I liked or comfortable with because my hair is long it’s below my hips . Then I found your video and I love it. I have a hard time finding a good hair dresser because every hair dresser I go to , they get scissor happy and chop it of ... thankfully my hair grows really fast. Anyway, thank you for sharing 🙂definitely going with this video ...

I gotta tell you: I think you are so pretty! Also want to let you know I have not been one who can sit through and listen to other videos explaining this same thing...the people talked on and on. Whereas with your video I found everything prior to the tutorial before 2:04 beneficial to listen to so I had no problem watching this from beginning to end. All of the info from start to finish was relevant and have watched it more than once as you encouraged and I'm glad I I'm taking your advice before I do anything more to my hair.
I definitely think you explained it so well and I could tell you were being your natural authentic self and thats definitely a plus. Thank you for the video. It was very helpful.

Had to comment that you have a very soothing and calm voice. And I just subscribed, so I'm looking forward to seeing your other videos. Btw you have GORGEOUS hair!!! I have wavy/curly/dry/frizzy hair. One of the few benefits to that is if your layers are off a little, it's hard to see it.

Several months ago, I had a stylist screw up my hair so bad I've been afraid to go back to a salon. I've never cut my own hair before so I was scared to death to do this but I did it anyway. It turned out exactly how I wanted it! It was fairly easy too. Why do stylists have a hard time with this? Anyway, THANK YOU!

Here for Covid cut plus since moving in ‘93 yes almost 30 years ago I had THE best hair cutter, stylist that has ever walked this planet. Everyone else has been an expensive letdown. Oooo especially going to Paul Mitchell school, I brought a picture (several actually) of what I wanted. After spending what seemed like 4 hours there, the timid little thing said “there” and I held up the pics saying does this in anyway resemble any of these pics? NO. Her teacher comes up to me saying “at least it’ll grow back”. Oy!

Also, weird ? but what kind of bra is that? Looks like a sports bra of some sort but I like the thin normal straps..I'm on a quest to find a comfy supportive bra to work in that isn't too sporty and uni-boob-ish.
Great video, thanks for sharing your info :)

Very helpful. This will be the first time cutting my hair. I just don't have time to get it done (got kids). I'm tired of how long and thick it is, it's past my hips. I get layers to make it look thinner and its easier to maintain. If anything it definitely needs a good trim (takes stylists over an hour just to trim, might as well do it myself). But honestly, I'm to the point of chopping it all off.. 😄 Thank you
