As a person who grew up with the 1990's Gargoyles TV Show, it's fun to see how previous iterations influenced the lore of the show. Examples: Reynard being the main character of the novel --> In the show Halcyon Reynard being one of the characters that faces off against, and later becomes an ally with, the Gargoyles. And with Reynard meaning "Fox", his daughter going by the name of Fox. Additionally, it seems that the show from the 1970's influenced the fact that Gargoyles traditionally live in caves and that their children hatch from eggs.
After traveling to Europe for an educational tour in my teens - one where we took courses in different countries - I fell in love with Gothic Cathedrals; and gargoyles and grotesques. I've been collecting them ever since.
*Gargoyles have always defended me. Stand guard atop my roof or in trees over looking me and ready to strike. They are my friends. They protect the Pious ...*
The gargoyle blep is so adorable😭😭 Btw gargoyles are probably my favorite monster/fantasy creature along with mermaids and foxgirl/kitsune/nine tailed fox creature.
You might want to re-watch that episode of Doctor Who, because I'm not aware of the Doctor ever killing the Master. As I recall, the Doctor's friend's willingness to sacrifice herself caused a creature the Master was trying to make a deal with to self-destruct. Also, I like you choice of shirts.
The 1972 movie, "Gargoyles," is a classic of the 70's. I bought the DVD a few years ago and my grandkids love it as much as I did as a kid. I enjoyed the 90's animated series as well. The mythology has links to the biblical serpent in the garden of eden and the fallen angels, as well as being mirrored in the alien lore of reptilians.
"One-thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age...of GARGOYLES! Stone by day, warriors by night. OH MY GODS! GARGOYLES! I watched the movie repeatedly, and laughed my butt off repeatedly, I love the cheese factor. I also love your shirt. The grotesques that are being installed these days bring a smile to my face, showing that the sense of fun is still alive and well
For many years, the movie would be shown once a year on one of the local UHF channels (yeah, that's how long ago this was). It became a family tradition among my family to watch it and eat pizza, so we could watch the cheese while eating the cheese.
I love gargoyles! I have a collection of them on my shelf (well, I guess technically mine are grotesques since they aren't waterspouts). The animated series from the 90s started my obsession but now I love collecting them. Thanks for this overview of their origins!
surely there must have been some link before Dr. Who's "the daemons" since they recognized the idea of the gargoyle coming to life. Since it was recognized as part of the trappings of the very occult oriented adventure. It would seem like maybe something from Hammer films.
It took me four minutes to realize you had that Gargoyles shirt on! It used to come on FOX at 6am; I used to get up WAY early for school to watch it. :D
One of my favorite modern interpretations is in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books, where the city watch figured out that a creature who’s perfectly happy sitting unmoving on rooftops all day is the perfect person to put on stakeouts.
Just want to say that I love this channel so much! I love learning about these monsters from different cultures, and I like that you provide historical and cultural context. I wanted to note that the dichotomy between the function of Gargoyles as "scary" in order to ward off evil and "entertaining" to make people laugh is perhaps not such a clear binary. At least in Ancient Greece, laughing was actually "apotropaic" and was thought to ward off evil/bad spirits. So the Gargoyles could theoretically be entertaining and ward off evil at the same time! Anyway, I think you're doing a fantastic job with this show and I hope you continue to teach us about awesome monsters!
I thought the word "gargoyle" came from the word "gargle," as in the sound made when water pours from their spouts. Also, Doctor Who had a gargoyle story? I'll have to check that out.
Was this your Halloween / October project? Excellent! So creative :) thank you! Also.... gotta say, freaking love the shirt. On point as ALWAYS with the outfit ;)
I heard that was the origin of the word gargoile, that they were named after the gargling sound the water made as it flowed from their "throats" and onto the streets bellow.
I was literally typing a comment about the xenonorph on Paisley Abbey and then that bit came up. It’s where I’m from and it’s really cool to see in person.
I’m doing a story on the Krampus. I was so impressed with the Monstrum presentations, I was hoping Emily did something on Christmas and La Befana and the Krampus.
There is also a highly entertaining YA book series by Jennifer L. Armentrout about guardian gargoyles that keep us safe from demons. They are human and turn to stone gargoyles while on watch. Like I said very entertaining.
I would like to hear about lykaios an island tribe of mystical race of human who worship the sun God and wolf goddess to bless them with lycanthrope. So yeah a mystical human race of werewolf who got there power from Apollo and Leto a wolf goddess.

St. Patrick's Gargoyle is one of my favourite fantasy novels and watching this video made me want to re-read it.
Since you've now brought up hellhounds in this video, would that one be next?
As a person who grew up with the 1990's Gargoyles TV Show, it's fun to see how previous iterations influenced the lore of the show. Examples: Reynard being the main character of the novel --> In the show Halcyon Reynard being one of the characters that faces off against, and later becomes an ally with, the Gargoyles. And with Reynard meaning "Fox", his daughter going by the name of Fox. Additionally, it seems that the show from the 1970's influenced the fact that Gargoyles traditionally live in caves and that their children hatch from eggs.
I was just literally about to check if there's a new update. 💕
LOVE THE SHIRT!
One of the many original stories I've written features a gargoyle and a sphynx as main characters, so I found this video extremely interesting!
Okay the "Alien" gargoyle is cool. 😊😊😊😊
I literally gasped when I saw your shirt. Very jealous.
Her shirt makes me feel very nostalgic
After traveling to Europe for an educational tour in my teens - one where we took courses in different countries - I fell in love with Gothic Cathedrals; and gargoyles and grotesques. I've been collecting them ever since.
Thank you so much for making this video! 😺😻
A monster a week for October, maybe? Love this series, please keep being amazing.
*Gargoyles have always defended me. Stand guard atop my roof or in trees over looking me and ready to strike. They are my friends. They protect the Pious ...*
Monstrum is the highlight of my day when it's published. Thank you.
I like the idea that gargoyles are benevolent protectors, sort of like a reverse fallen angel. A rising demon, if you will.
Haha! Way to rock the Gargoyles T-shirt! I must say I've battled D&D gargoyles since around 1979!
Please do a video on the Lich lore!
It's a good idea. But it's not going to happen.
@@Demolitiondude Why you think so?
@@MauM. two reasons.
1. Suggested werewolves and mummies at episode one and nothing.
2. Political bias.
Paladin Demo political bias? Explain how Lich has political bias..
I 22 it
The gargoyle blep is so adorable😭😭
Btw gargoyles are probably my favorite monster/fantasy creature along with mermaids and foxgirl/kitsune/nine tailed fox creature.
I still remember that TV movie. I used to have "fan fiction" dreams based from it. It was terribly hokey, but enjoyable and an interesting premise.
DOUBLE POINTS FOR THE GOLIATH T SHIRT!!!
One of the best animated series ever... aka Gargoyles: The Next Generation...
We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect. Frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years...now here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we LIVE AGAIN!
We are defenders of the night! We are *GARGOYLES!"*
I'm always fascinated by gargoyles and vampires and generally these old creatures and I don't know why.. They're just so awesome
OH MY GODS!
OMG Doc Z! I want your Gargoyles t-shirt soooooooooooo bad!
The Gargoyles cartoon shirt is the icing on the cake for this vid? I miss that show...and my childhood :(
You left out Terry pratchett's Discworld gargoyles, who are basically cops and security guards
It's true.
I heard that story from a audio book!🐱
I heard that story from a audio book.🐱
Both gargle and gargoyle are derived from the same French origin. :)
This is so awesome~! Thank you so much!
LOVE the shirt by the way!
Was this your Halloween / October project? Excellent! So creative :) thank you!
Also.... gotta say, freaking love the shirt. On point as ALWAYS with the outfit ;)
Oh no. There’s so much more to come!-*Dr.Z*
Storied ahhh I love you guys!! Thank you so much! October is the best month 🎃👻🎃
I really enjoyed watching Gargoyles as a kid.
fun fact: Gargouiller (gar- goo- ee- ay) is French for to gurgle
I heard that was the origin of the word gargoile, that they were named after the gargling sound the water made as it flowed from their "throats" and onto the streets bellow.
Love that you had the "Gargoyles" TV series shirt on during this video, it's such a good show
There was a episode of Mona the vampire that she and her friends fought the gargoyle king! 🦇
I was literally typing a comment about the xenonorph on Paisley Abbey and then that bit came up. It’s where I’m from and it’s really cool to see in person.
Thanks for the new content! And love the shirt!
I want to say thank you Dr Zarka for making this video! 😻
Can somebody remember the cartoon series "gargoyles" 🤔🙂
me. i loved it.
I can
I do.
Who doesn’t?!
@@lennyfais5040 what you said
I’m doing a story on the Krampus.
Like I said very entertaining.
for the whole video I had that awesome Gargoyles theme in my head.
I'm only here for the monstrum episodes
i only found this channel a month ago, i've watched all the monstrum videos and i've been (im)patiently waiting for more.
Werewolf video 🤷🏻♂️
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah please do that PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would like to hear about lykaios an island tribe of mystical race of human who worship the sun God and wolf goddess to bless them with lycanthrope. So yeah a mystical human race of werewolf who got there power from Apollo and Leto a wolf goddess.
Now I wanna see a Lycan-garg. SO. BADLY.
Gargoyle images always brings back memories of Notre Dame (and Quasimodo's Out There and my all-time favorite Hellfire) 👌
The gargoyle: the fancy gutter that castles have. Or a mythic legend.
When I saw this video in my subscription list, I thought to myself "I wonder if there will be references to the TV show", only to find Dr. Zarka represemting right away! Well done as always!
Love the shirt!!!
I love that shirt, Doctor Z!!!! "Gargoyles" was one of my favourite shows growing up :)
so you telling me that gargling and gargoule have the same root? :p
I can guarantee it, yes
