Yes Iam painting right now. Love the idea for the video and I will certainly do that. Also, you are correct, I don't use miniatures for D&D because I have...you know...an imagination. ;)
Where can I get one of these imaginations? Or two, or three, if they're on offer? If I back enough Kickstarters, could I end up with a Pile Of Imaginations? Would I have to eBay some off? I have so many questions!
@@DonCurrywurst I guess I should amend my answer to say that painting a "set" of minis isnt that fun, but I do have quite a bit of fun painting one-offs or single units/commanders. I just get bored of all the tedious painting jobs but I dont ever get bored of the tedious assembly jobs
@@DonCurrywurst I feel ya. I just get bored with the "core" units where I have to paint like 60 of them. Generally my goal with those is get them done as quickly as possible lol. Most I will paint at a time is like 7-8 though.
Hey dudes, just wanted to say a big thank you. Long story short you got me painting regularly and not procrastinating. As some one who started recently I've quickly got a pile of shame with more to come that wasn't being painted. At work I listened to this and 100% me was wasting time by being distracted by having my PC in front of me, much easier to look at videos or play a game than paint the pile. I lifted my stuff to the desk behind me. Tech free and it has been liberating. Thank you guys
I'm relieved to know you guys have the correct view on black liquorice. And coconut. But cauliflower and brussel sprouts better than broccoli? Guess you like tasting farts more than tasting not farts.
Cut some sprouts in half, drown them in butter, soy sauce, and black pepper, then sauté until carbonized on one side. Meet god without leaving your kitchen. Bonus if you add a spoonful of bacon grease.
A C let’s be honest, if you need to put that much flavour on something to make it taste good, it’s not good. The stuff you’re putting on it is good. Like put that stuff on something else that doesn’t start out tasting like farts. Broccoli tastes good raw, or blanched, also with stuff on it.
Cauliflower, brussel sprouts and broccoli... none of these things are either meat or cheese. Why would one eat such things that are not meat or cheese? Oh I forgot pasta. Pasta is another acceptable food.
I just realized the irony of watching Jon telling me I'm wasting my hobby time as I watch a UA-cam video of him telling me I'm wasting my hobby time, in real time as I waste my hobby time.
I've been consuming hours of your podcast, listening to it on the background whilst studying for mid terms. Thank you for cheering me up and keeping me company during these long long nights and days. Cheers guys!
Hey guys, I love what you are doing with Trapped Under Plastic. This is such a breath of fresh air. I am relatively new to the hobby, summer of 2018 to be exact, and this is liquid gold. Keep on keeping on!
A big part of why I am a part of the hobby community is the social experience. I can spend 30 to 40 hours painting models but the end goal is not to dozens of beautiful models for myself, the end goal is to share what I have done with others. Talking about what we are doing or what we wanna do is part of the experience, it is not procrastiation, it is effectivly part of the hobby time for me, more so when I meet people IRL. As a painter and wargamer, now that I am litteraly starved of real life hobby interactions, I think it is the most enjoying time in the hobby. I love painting and crafting, but for me and many others sharing our models and thoughts, not out of pride, is the most important. I know your are in the mind of painting more and better each time, I understand this feeling (very american I might add) but it doesn't feel right to paint only for myself. It sounds like you are doing minis for the sake of competiton (with others or with yourselves) and not for the sake of the hobby. I already had this feeling during Scott's video about his painting competiton history, always wanting to crack the code for winning or entering a competition for the sole purpose of winning. It doesn't fit with my visison of the hobby.
How I take advantage of my hobby time: you don't require much to build stuff. I have a little box with an xacto and some plastic that needs mould lines removed, and I take it everywhere! When I am on my desk, I paint. Elsewhere, I remove mould lines. It also helps a lot with storage, since it makes everything take less space. Greetings from Argentina!
This will be the realest advice you ever get... " Just Keep It Real"! Thats whats most enduring about you guys, thats what makes you our virtual friends in this hobby, and life too! Banter and unscripted talking is the best.
I wait till my kids and wife are asleep, turn on my youtube subscriptions, and just zone out. Painting, I have found, helps me immensely with my depression.
Spoon paining is from the scale model making scene. Its used to test paint coverage over a primer colour and to ensure that the paint is thinned correctly. Its more used for lacquer paints than acrylic paints because its far harder to strip lacquers off a 1/32 scale tank than it is to strip or cover acrylics of a mini
Mister Ninjas sounding like he has never experienced a surprise poop and those of us who was here from the beginning all know that he very much has experienced just that. :D
I could agree more with the fact that I too listening to this because I wish I had more friends that painted minis. Not exactly sure how to give you guys more of a direction to lean into, honestly you're doing great, keep it up. I love the rambling and banter you two have. It's just so fun to listen to.
Congrats on Season2! Loving the Preamble Ramble, the bookmarks are good too if you want to skip to a particular part on a re-watch. I disagree with the liquorice, but I'd likely OD on water from my coffee consumption before anything else. I think the friendly, conversational, hangout style is already there, you don't need to focus on trying harder for that feeling. Just do what you guys do.
On the topic of talking about painting rather than actually painting. Pretty much all people have a need for real social interaction which is harder than ever to fulfill in our digital age. Because of this talking to people about an interesting topic is generally more enjoyable than doing something introverted by yourself. Even if you do enjoy miniature painting it's generally not as enjoyable as social interaction or some approximation thereof.
appreciate you guys shouting me out and the secret santa. gotta give credit to Daerae, its her and I who are doing the secret santa. to be fair, shes doing a ton of work on it. probably who contacted you, jon lol. great show as always! love it, and super happy to have season 2!

This topic really hits home for me right now. I've fallen into a weird state where I sit down to paint, and I spend 3+ hours painting a single leg of a lizard....poorly
Great to have you back, not sure what the topic was but hell it was entertaining. Re: Black licorice you got to find a pack of Bassett's "All sorts" (from Britain) you won't regret it.
*returns from grabbing snack* “So, could you identify what created the diarrhea?” Ah yes, my favorite miniature painting podcast, answering the pertinent hard-hitting questions ALL hobbyists need answered.
yep it’s true! consuming the glycyrrhizin found in licorice may prompt potassium levels in the body to decline, which may lead to issues including abnormal heart rate, high blood pressure, edema, lethargy and even congestive heart failure. Also that’s why I tell my mum she can only drink one cup of licorice tea a day! She LOVES that stuff
I started in W40k hobbying June 2020, and Ninjon's marines for Steve was the first paint work done that inspired me to become much better in my painting. I aspire to learn his style with my Raven Guard and Space Wolves army. Still finishing up my Nihilakh necrons in the meantime.
To encourage people to get things finished you need to invent the miniature painting equivalent of the Duolingo owl. Imagine Jon popping up on your phone, waving a machette and whispering " you haven't done your mini-painting practice today......"
tattoo idea: three paint brushes at different sizes and an airbrush laying across the brushes with the word "since (insert year you started painting minis)"

I'm not a miniature painter (i'm a cosplayer) but I love discussions like this episode. It's so true that people fear the "wip" phase of a project so much because like you said, it looks like butt and you just can't FATHOM it becoming the final product in that moment. Every costume I've made has had that phase and I feel like I can't get past it until I just DO ... it's really hard to describe, but it's why I try to take as many actual WIP photos as I can to let other people know hey uhhhhh, this is gonna look a lot worse before it gets better :) hopefully you dont mind a few costume photos in the "#truewips" tag
My idea to lean into the hobby time with friends is take calls from your patreons. You do like 1 call an ep, doesn’t have to be long, you chat about something they have been working on, you give tips and feedback to them, etc. just an idea. (:
Been using your acrylic-TMM paint method Jon and its absolutely brilliant, feel like I'm getting worth out of my Vallejo for the first time - keep the videos coming!
Quick point on guests, maybe pointed out before, maybe not. I think a good way to deal with might be to have a list of topics for the season, then when you have a guest, let them pick the topic they want to be a part of. That way the guest gets to chat on a topic they're interested in, and you don't have to go down the origins story route as you mention. Just a quick thought. Love the show... :) edit: the burbs... makes tom hanks a legend. Edit 2: Weird board sizes. I am guessing... print requirements to minimize productions costs. I would guess it maximizes space on a printer. For both the board and fitting the boards in boxes... somewhere. Maybe even the same with battle mats. As I say, just speculation having worked with print. Edit 3: You know how sticks get covered in poop... when someones been told not too leave their desk for any reason to minimize hobby distractions.... No... I am not updating this comment as Ilsten to the show... what are you talking about? And no, I am not hobbying, I am working while listening, god knows I need distractions there, drawing comic pages, as fun as everyone thinks it is, can be tedious... Ok, now I'm rambling. Edit 4: Hobby time wasting... I suffer from every single one of those... to the point... where I have hundreds of minis (probably around five or six hundred at this point), conversions, scratch built terrain, bought terrain, probably 4 full skirmish tables worh, the 70 paint vallejo game set, pots of brushes including the infamous rapheal and windsor newtons. And I have watched hundreds of hours of painting youtube videos... hundreds and hundreds... I'm here after all. And I still haven't painted a single mini. Not one... I know the issues... fear... many many fears... but thats still an excuse But I could say the same for my supposed youtube channel... a lot of equipment, not a lot of videos... none in fact. Fear... Edit 4: final edit... F**K HASBRO. Sorry... thats not heroquest and thats not acceptable. I wish that hadn't been funded... as you say, no shade at those who backed it, but that was an unacceptable d**k move on their part, and that should have fallen flat on its face. Had that been a complete re release of the original, absolutely no update, at all, I would have been more okay with that... but as it stands... I really wish it had gone the way of Star Wars Battlefront II, where the community stood up and said... that is an uncool cash grab, and we shall not support it. Dammit, you could have got arcadia quest for the same sort of money, far better place to put your funds... Ok, on that note... I'm out... Edit 5: Dang... I need some real friends... Then I wouldn't write essays for youtube comments...
I must say between the diarrhoea stick story and the one about wacking a machete against nature wearing a bikini, this episode gave so much quality content it felt as informative as a documentary, loved it :)
In regards to the Virtual Hobby Friends, it would be cool to like showcase some models/paint jobs the community is excited about, like posts on the facebook page or something, or an upcoming sculpts and things like that.
Preamble Ramble: the phenomenon finally gets the name it deserves. Outstanding. :) Also- Taylor Street Tattoo is conveniently near-ish to adepticon, and any of their staff would kill a tendie tattoo. :)
Also, handy hint for removing poopy smells from your naughty pups is to use tomato ketchup instead of dog shampoo. Apparently the acidity helps neutralise odours, although I guess it'd be quite messy 😁
I live on the east side of Detroit. I can absolutely confirm that the only people who cream themselves over the UP are the people who actively go there for summers and their cabins and whatnot. You never, ever see a Yooper gushing over the Mitten. UP creaming is basically a thing that Karens and Kens in the suburbs do.
It seems like the sensible idea for a shared tattoo for you guys would be an OG plastic mini on the sprue. How about one of the original 2nd edition space marines?
I think y'all touched on it a bit, but one thing that I use to procrastinate a lot is "Well I don't know what scheme/color/theory/lore to use for these specific models". And I don't know if it's procrastinating or lost love, or having picked a color scheme that is too effort intensive, but "I really don't want to do this color scheme over and over and over..."
Spoons are mostly used outside of Mini painting or getting used to airbrush flows for lacquer paint that ruin plastic models and basically strictly for airbrushing. I see it a lot for testing a airbrush layering for Gunpa and army models but not weathering or what have you. Its to test what layers affect others and how you can paint a "Test Model" but a spoon. Esp if you sand them to rough up the surface to get the paint to stick properly. This is so much more useful for painting Gunpla and test Paints then it is for miniatures or otherwise organic models for painting... cause on gunpla they are covered in large flat surfaces... TL;DR: Spoons are good for non miniature painting tests
What a time to be a Yooper! Not only did we have the great Gordon Ramsay eating at our Houghton and Keweenaw establishments, Miniac Scott also visited our great beaches and enjoyed the fall colors!! I am beyond proud to be a Yooper right now! #yooperstrong Taiga is a good store, but they haven't pushed to build the 40k and AoS communities like the previous game store. Michigan Tech(the best) has a wargaming club as well, we play GW games, Horus Heresy, Bolt Action, Team Yankee primarily.
As a born and raised yooper, I hope you had a tone of fun up here in Marquette Scott. Taiga is my go to game store and it's super cool to hear it get a shoutout.
If you draw a tindy you have to use the sock one! As for tattoos you should have a tattoo of each other from the view of a miniature. Like a crazy 28mm lens so it has a 90s skateboard art look
If you tattoo a rule on your arm, or better still, a pattern whose scale you know, you can lean over the game table and 'magically' guess artillery and charge ranges without your opponent knowing how.
An interesting opening pair of topics - rabbit and liquorice. According to the BBC panel quiz show QI, you will die if you *only* eat rabbit, it seems it is deficient in certain essential nutrients. Presumably it is slower than eating several kilos of liquorice every day though. Be aware of the issues with Covid when inviting people to fly over from the UK. Covid is spiking again here in the UK and international travel is generally to be avoided. You might want to remember how to pronounce Latham first ;) better still, just save up and both of you come over here for a few weeks!
My big problem is that I don't have a dedicated hobby location. It's right next to my work/gaming desk, because Covid. It's one of the things we'll be looking for when we look for a new place soon.
Kale as a healty food is such an american thing. Here in germany its usally cooked half kale, half pork (consistency of pulled pork) mixed together with a cooked saussage and potatos as side
Probably not the first to mention this - Preamble Ramble is a phrase used by The Paint all the Minis podcast by Dan Adams. Probably not cool to lift that without giving a shoutout to Dan’s podcast and the associated community.
Cools videocast! Obligatory poop topic - check. Long preamble about random stuff - check. In topic of matching tatoos: 3 sisters got the Powerpuff Girls tatoo. I think they are cheesy, and having a tatoo seems like a long term commitment, but if they like it why should I be negative about that? Power to them! Maybe go with "brush" tatoo? (boring, I know) Maybe go with some kind of inside joke that is connected with your shared hobby? Hobby time is never wasted! Unless by "hobby time" we count watching youtube while eating chips...
I like they came out with hero quest so I can play and paint it with my nephew and not ruin my classic collectible copy. Getting him into the hobby with the same game that got me into the hobby is priceless.

edit: the burbs... makes tom hanks a legend.
Not one... I know the issues... fear... many many fears... but thats still an excuse
But I could say the same for my supposed youtube channel... a lot of equipment, not a lot of videos... none in fact.
Hahah, now I know how to frame that video. On another note, I am now looking for a Glotkin.
Also- Taylor Street Tattoo is conveniently near-ish to adepticon, and any of their staff would kill a tendie tattoo. :)
Thanks a lot for this podcast. It has really motivated me to get to painting, and I have plenty of stuff to do!
Also, handy hint for removing poopy smells from your naughty pups is to use tomato ketchup instead of dog shampoo. Apparently the acidity helps neutralise odours, although I guess it'd be quite messy 😁
"I'll take whatever drips outta this thing"
Wow. Gold
Fantastic stuff lads. A little pee crept out several times!
If you draw a tindy you have to use the sock one! As for tattoos you should have a tattoo of each other from the view of a miniature. Like a crazy 28mm lens so it has a 90s skateboard art look
Or just do random colour strips on your thumbs! Which then everyone else says you have some paint on your thumb and you are like No it's a tattoo
Since I never finish anything, ever, every photo is a true WIP
I'm literally wasting my hobby time listening to this podcast
If you tattoo a rule on your arm, or better still, a pattern whose scale you know, you can lean over the game table and 'magically' guess artillery and charge ranges without your opponent knowing how.
I'm trying to paint here..... laughing my ass off only 17 mins in and i have messed up 4 times. Thanks lads :D
Thanks for continuing to be the friends I never had. I bet you guys could get Nick Cage on the show. He doesn't seem to picky.
the miniature referenced @10:10 Definitely Reaper...BONES
An interesting opening pair of topics - rabbit and liquorice. According to the BBC panel quiz show QI, you will die if you *only* eat rabbit, it seems it is deficient in certain essential nutrients. Presumably it is slower than eating several kilos of liquorice every day though.
Be aware of the issues with Covid when inviting people to fly over from the UK. Covid is spiking again here in the UK and international travel is generally to be avoided. You might want to remember how to pronounce Latham first ;) better still, just save up and both of you come over here for a few weeks!
Content that chains into my ears :TraaaPppedd UnnderRrr PlllaaaAaassticcCC
The feces was probably from a dog who drank ocean water and it gave it diarrhea (it happens to my dog when we go to the ocean)
Yeah they get that Ocean Spray :P
Well if you can find ocean water in the UP that's a special kinda special lol 🤣
Don't mind me. Just commenting for the Google analytics
My big problem is that I don't have a dedicated hobby location. It's right next to my work/gaming desk, because Covid. It's one of the things we'll be looking for when we look for a new place soon.
This podcast playlist is my content chain
I hate black licorice, but its for sure beaten by candy corn. Candy corn is the epitome of sadness
Kale as a healty food is such an american thing. Here in germany its usally cooked half kale, half pork (consistency of pulled pork) mixed together with a cooked saussage and potatos as side
Think that doing a Live pod cast with live chat would be awesome and very inclusive. And it would help support your endeavors with the super chats.
Hells yeah son! I've been waiting for the new episode ive watched all the other multiple times while painting lol
Hell yea! i've been waiting for this!
Idea: When you record the podcast talk your talk but after the 'end', do a hour or half hour stream after, and then add that to the podcast.
waiting for the hashtag #realWIP! actually a really nice idea, we all have that "shitty stage" of painted miniature
Hero quest news
it's also only available to North America and Canada with very high delivery fees.
More like Hero Quest LOSE :(
Wips is slang word for your underpants here in Northern Ireland. Keep up the good work chaps, long live the ramble!!
Probably not the first to mention this - Preamble Ramble is a phrase used by The Paint all the Minis podcast by Dan Adams. Probably not cool to lift that without giving a shoutout to Dan’s podcast and the associated community.
I use a sonic shoulder massager to mix/shake my paints!
Jon looks friendly, like the sizzler waiter who slips you ghb looks friendly.
Came for the ramble, stayed for the ramble
