I just bought one. I bought my first seiko divers watch in 1974 when i was 21 yrs old. I bought it in Fiji when we were cruising aboard our little wooden sailboat in the Pacific and I used it as ships chronometer for celestial navigation. There was no satellite navigation then so I needed a good watch. I owned it for 15 years. It was superb in every way. Then tragedy struck when I stupidly placed it on top of the car and drove away leaving it behind on the road where some lucky person picked it up. For thirty years i regretted its loss and tried many other lesser watches, none of which came close to my beloved first seiko. A few days ago I bought this exact same prospex and I feel like I’ve come home. At age 69 I’m still actively kayaking and sailing and doing other watersports so I wanted my old Seiko back. Now I feel it’s finally happened. The green colour is superb. I’m fine with the clasp as I don’t know any better. My only slight complaint is the bezel feels a little stiff to turn. I use the bezel a lot. But that’s probably just my arthritic fingers being weaker than they uses to be. Loving this watch so far. One other thing. I’m a woman with quite slender wrists but it doesn’t look or feel too big for me. Looks great alongside my silver dolphin bracelet too.
@@onoff5604 In those days, my favourite radio programme in mid-ocean was the "co-ordinated universal time" signals. I had to know exactly how accurate my watch was in order to be most accurate with our navigation calculations. Any error at all had to be corrected before calculating our sextant sunshots. So the important thing was not so much how much it gained or lost, but how regular was that gain or loss. So if you could get no time signal check you could work out how much it would have lost since the day before, but only providing its gained/lost at a regular pace.
Finally, another quartz watch with a smooth running seconds hand instead of the irritating 1 second ticks of most quartz watches. This is a quartz I would actually purchase.
@@fungus70 the Sumo quartz chrono. Thank you for demonstrating the chronograph. Believe it or not, there are some videos out there that show the watch but don’t bother pushing the chrono button. I was looking for the demo because the one second jumps of the seconds hand give me a headache. I much prefer the smoother motion like that on this Sumo. My Bulova Presiciionist also has a smooth seconds hand.
The more I watched your review, the more I liked the Sumo. I've had many versions over the years. To my surprise, the chronograph dial adds to it and makes it less boring.

The Sumo dials just didn’t bring anything extra to the table for me to condone the purchase of one. But I must say,, I do really like this one... ....A LOT!!! Hmmm what to do? Just as I’m trying to kick the Seiko dive watch addiction they go & bloody pull this one on me🤣 Funny, when I first started buying watches it was dress watches I really liked. I didn’t even like divers. Fast forward 3 years & now all I have is a collection of Seiko dive watches haha!

Great review. I’ve just this week bought this solar sumo chrono, blue dial and bezel and rubber strap. I’m really happy with it considering it was £270 brand new, I’d consider it a bargain. I’ve ordered a quality Milanese strap so should be a good all rounder. Your comment regarding a ceramic bezel insert is the only thing I’d change, personally. I can’t see getting a good quality one that I’d be happy with, unless you’ve some suggestions? 😉

not always the case with limited editions with seiko as they make too many of them and its diluted the market. I'd trade the black in for this as this one, but not have 2 of the same.

Great Seiko reviews! I tried on every Seiko Prospex under $2000 cad. For some reason I tried on the Sumo last. Once I did, I was actually blown away by the case shape, finish and design and then you factor in the Saphire crystal and 70hr movt and its a real powerhouse. If I wanted a chrono this new special edition would be on my list for sure. The bracelet is comfortable and looks nice but as you point out it deserves a milled clasp and a better end link design People talk about alignment or lack of ceramic bezels and I see why but what the heck is up with the afterthough end links on soo many Seiko watches? The Sumo, new MM200, MM300 and OMG the 62 MAS its a total put off. San Martin and Steeldive do better endlinks. I would absolutely recommend a Sumo for someone with a 7" or larger wrist, but plan on a Strapcode bracelet and perhaps a nice lumed colour matched ceramic bezel insert from day one.
If I am understanding correctly (and from the site description) it sounds like there is only 60 minutes of chronograph timing. (Which seems maybe redundant with the 60 minute bezel timer...). The automatic seiko chronographs seem to have a 12 hour chronograph (is that correct?). And I just got a new/old Seiko Prospex World Time with a 24hour chronograph and GMT and more (but I'm not sure how well it would work for ~diving trips). A 200-300 meter diver with a 12 or 24 hour chronograph would be amazing.

Well if it was adjustable individually then it could be used as a second time zone a GMT hand but unfortunately it is not so it's just an AMPM indicator
@@EscapementWatch my first impression was an gmt hand as well. But actually not. Good for v192 got power indicator, an improvement from v175. seiko could do better in the next generation, maybe 5 years later.
I've got the Gen 2 Sumo (Prospex "X"). Love it. But I don't really care for this one. In fact, I don't like anything about it; starting with the hand set. The chrono dial is a bit too plain (compared with the standard Seiko chrono face). I don't like the gilt text and hand. I don't like the new look text on the bezel. I don't like the BRG. Maybe a Hulk green.
Gen 2 Sumo is brilliant. I own the “blue Coral” SBDC069. Absolutely love it. Case finish, stunning dial, nuclear lume, Topped off by a slightly domed crystal.
I owned the solar quartz “ black series “ before my gen 2 Blue Coral Sumo, and it was an underwhelming watch to me. The bezel action was inconsistent , the fake patina on the lume made it to perform very poor, the alignment was seriously off, and I could not put a strapcode bracelet on it because the case is slightly different compared to the regular Sumo... So I flipped it, I wanted to like it but I couldn’t.
This one's not for me, I've never been into diver chronograph watches & especially not quartz ones. Doesn't seem very good value eitheir at $800, I'd rather have a three hand automatic Sumo. Great video as always though, you intro music is very catchy!

Yes I kept this one the longest and it grows on you. Surprised chronograph works so well on the sumo!
You are right. After wearing this chrono for a while, the face of the regular Sumo looks rather plain Jane 😅

I have two Seiko solar quartz watches. To my mind the best of both worlds - reasonable price, great accuracy, and in addition no buying new batteries.

There are days when I’d pay a little extra to get a nice matte aluminum bezel insert over ceramic.
One day ceramic, sapphire, and acrylic bezels will give way to the return of aluminum bezels!
