  • "The F-16 can see much further than the Russian aircraft on on offer, and it can strike more readily. It has a simpler engagement methodology. So it starts to give the Ukrainians a real air advantage over the Russians."
F-16's will give Ukraine a major advantage on the ground but it could be too late, Maj. Gen. Rupert Jones tells #timesradio

I think the most important aspect of F-16's for Ukraine is that it opens up a MUCH larger portion of the NATO equipment catalog to Ukraine as possible future donations. So much of NATO capability is air delivered and until now has been unavailable to this effort. Whether it is radar jamming pods for aid in SEAD and DEAD operations, long range air to air missiles for air superiority and missile defense, or just to deliver glide bombs and cruise missiles, the stumbling block in the way was always the lack of Western NATO capable aircraft. It was why we were scrounging to get old Soviet ammunition and gear from everywhere else on the planet until now.

It could also bring Combined Effects Munitions (CEM) and Wind Corrected Munition Dispenser (WCMD) into the fight. (I assume GATOR is a non-starter for political reasons) These were both designed specifically for this class of warfare, against this target set, in this environment. And then there is JSOW, JAASM, and JAASM-ER to compliment JDAM and Paveway III. Add in exquisite targeting, and the impact could be significant, to say the least. Is there an ADA threat? Of course there is, but these systems were designed to work together for multiple kills per mission, with weapon deployment over the horizon (OTH) during initial SEAD strikes. Many on UA-cam tend to think in terms of one system vs. another, which just isn't how these were designed to work.

The first Ukrainian pilots went to the test training facility in March. Now unless there is more going on than is publicly available we are talking about 2-12 pilots and simulator training only. This was essentially evaluation training to figure out how long it would take to train Ukrainian pilots.
Still, that is a few guys with a lot of simulator hours who probably wouldn't take much to finish training.

What difference would F-16s overhead make? Sorry, I just don't see it. Sure, they can fly around for a while, until their fuel runs out, they can maybe shoot down another plane or two, and then what? Big bombers like B-52s might make a difference, but what good is a fighter jet? They are going to make the Russians withdraw from lands that have been their homes for hundreds of years? They are just going to walk away because they saw some planes flying overhead? Or because they lost a plane or two? Russia is a huge country, they have tons of planes, and tons of pilots. It's not going to make any difference on the ground. At least that I can see. The Russians know that the "west" doesn't have the fuel necessary to supply any long-term effective air campaign. They'll just wait it out and then continue with what they were doing. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure people realise that the slow-walking of capabilities across these thresholds is essentially the salami tactic. Just like in Yes, (Prime?) Minister, Hacker was asked, at which point he would launch the nukes if Warsaw Pact tanks rolled over the border and took ground one slice at a time, and found out he'd be giving up territory all the way to the Channel without launching, Russia is now in similar situation WRT those thresholds. By not immediately going all-in, the West has made any Russian ABC or full mobilisation or some other big response completely disproportionate for any such crossing. The previous status quo was already "accepted", so any response would only be to the last development.
Whether it is intentional strategy, lucky reluctance or cowardice, or whatever on part of the West, it has actually worked in blunting the threat of nuclear war. That is not to say that Putin couldn't just go crazy and order the attack, but he would now have a very difficult time convincing the very serious people you put in charge of those weapons that such attack would be a sane idea, because he has been at it for over a year now and, while there has been movement from the West, none of it has been sudden ramping up that could be interpreted as an actual existential attack. Any serious officer in the command chain will ask why holding on to Ukranian conquest would be an existential problem for Russia and not just an indication that the top guy has started to seriously lack judgement and is just trying to hold on to his power.

If he launches nukes, he'll probably die deep in his bunker along with millions of Russians.
He knows China won't help in any realistic way, nor India or Iran.
If Putin were smart, he would declare victory. He can say most of the Nazi's are gone. And start withdrawing his troops. He can ask Ukraine for a few tanks so he can have a parade!

    • @aaronbaker2186

I hate to be the negative voice here but it's not over because Russia hasn't been attrited enough for the West and NATO to be willing to end it. As you said, this war could have been over already. At the beginning of the war when the Russians didn't even have enough diesel to reach Kiev they could have been wiped out even by switchblade drones.
We also have to understand that before this war Ukraine wasn't on the best of terms with the rest of Europe. Europe isn't talking about it now, but they weren't happy with the treatment of Russians in the east of Ukraine and probably other human rights issues. I'm not trying to justify what Russia has done and is doing. I very much think this was purely a land grab by Russia and human rights was just an excuse. But neither of these countries were considered "the good guys" before this started.
We know the west doesn't want boots on the ground or NATO country flagged equipment in the battle. Add to that I'm sure there was, and possibly still is, some hesitation to give Ukraine too much tech. Remember that in many militaries in the world there is a huge black market for goods and equipment. I'm not so sure that the Ukraine military is as squeaky clean as it needs to be to get the best stuff. I'll be curious to see exactly how hi-tech these F-16s really are. "Jack of all trades, master of none, is often better than a master of one".
The F-16 is the Swiss army knife of fighter jet. It it's just kitted out with air to air missiles and no extra fuel tanks or sensor pods it's a deadly quick and agile little fighter that can easily go up against Russia's latest Suhois (the Su-57 only exist on paper) and it will absolutely blow MiGs out of the skies. If it's kitted out with ground scanning IR pods and SDBs it's a capable close air support air craft with a very low turn radius and low-enough stall speed. If it's kitted out with radar detection/jamming pods and anti-radiation missiles its a capable SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defence) fighter. In the latest upgrade block it can detect enemy aircraft of all types, and engage them, far beyond visual range.

The problem with the A-10 is that it's too vulnerable against MANPADS and attack helicopters. If Ukraine ever degrades Russia to the point where A-10s can fly freely and help clear trenches the war will already be over....

They were originally designed to be the "Low" part of the USAF's "High-Low" Air Superiority doctrine. In this case, these are designations of cost. F-15's were highly capable but very expensive, so to provide improved capability in numbers, the cheaper F-16 was developed. By the 80's the Military was embracing the concept of the Fighter-Bomber again and the F-16 proved to be a very capable airframe to adopt to the role. Eventually the USAF would even develop the vaunted Air Superiority F-15 into a highly capable bomb truck itself with the E model.

Ultimately, it was probably important to take time in deciding to provide major military systems to Ukraine, because some degree of consensus among allies is necessary. There is a non-trivial possibility that a larger war is coming, and it's not the best plan to embrace a large war with open arms. Elon Musk recently observed that statements by China indicate that it intends to seek to take over Taiwan by force, memorably stating that you don't have to read between the lines to see this -- you just have to read the lines. (Taiwan isn't going to embrace China willingly, after all) At some point within the next five years, China may decide to join Russia in a broader war to displace the post-WW2 global order and assert old fashioned spheres of influence. From an American point of view, the current period somewhat resembles the lend-lease period before the attack on Pearl Harbor triggered a global war. The more deliberately the present situation is handled, the more likely we are to limit the scope of a global conflagration, if one occurs.

    • @aaronbaker2186

The Chinese statements about Taiwan are, in my opinion, aimed at domestic pacification. "Don't complain about the Government, we are busy figuring out how to get Taiwan back!"
An actual Chinese invasion would not only destroy the Chinese economy, it could well lead to mass starvation in China.
Unfortunately it would also destroy the world economy. Remember, Taiwan has a suicide switch tied to their chip factories. If it looks like China will win it will take 5 years to get computer production back online. Also the new chip factories would probably be in the US.

The Russians would be unwise to send their jets into Ukrainian airspace with the advent of F16s. Forget the generals, Russian pilots would rather avoid face-to-face engagements with unknown adversaries. An agile F16 in the hands of a trained pilot is more dangerous than current Russian jets in the hands of under-trained amateurs. As for border regions, guided munitions can sail over soft borders and contested ground to hit belligerent weapons platforms without violating internationally recognized Russian airspace. With encrypted communications, nobody knows who is flying the F16s, maybe a western contractor with lots of Iraq and Afghanistan experience. High risk for Russians.
