just found out this is a real animal. i remember hearing the sound effect in movies on other planets thinking it was some alien sound that was created, and never thought it was a real animal until now.
I caught the call this morning on my rainy walk I love how you articulate the way the loons sound I was not so knowledgeable & I found your video before putting mine up today!
@Rin Santiago There's no way to know what Andrewsarchus sounded like. It may very have howled, just as it may very well have made any number of sounds.
Once one hears these amazing birds, you are transformed into a Loon lover forever. As the narrator said, the sounds stick with you for the rest of your life. Such enchanting birds.
I am 67 now and have been a canoe tripper all my life. This loon call, and the joyful sounds of children at play, are my favorite sounds in this world.
These birds' calls embody the spirit of the wilderness. It's so hard to explain, but it just gives you this heavy feeling in your chest whenever you hear them.
The first time I heard a loon in the wild was when I was backpacking in Glacier National Park. I stopped by Harrison lake, totally secluded, and heard their call as I was drifting off to sleep. It was heaven.
MoundShroud Creations yes great memories: i heared them when paddling the big salmon river at sandy lake, totally calmness, first sounds in the morning, just before sunrise
Same here. I went camping in Haliburton, Ontario and heard this very early morning. Must of been dawn. Just before the sun would come up. Was surrounded by a lake. Was the most beautiful and daunting sound I ever heard as drifting off to sleep. It kind of woke me up and was so beautiful as I layer there listening as my heart was pounding in my chest ♡ somehow I knew it was a loon though I never heard before. ... it almost resembles a coyote but then I knew it was different. Has whopping looping sound to it. So beautiful. ♡
I from Minnesota so we hear these all of the time... I went to glacier and we could here them and there were people that thought they were wolves and got kinda scared so I assured them that they had nothing to worry about and that they were just loons.
I was fortunate enough on one occasion to have a pair of loons come within 30 ft of my canoe. The sound of conversation among themselves was truly unforgettable.
It's not sad to me...it is communication between a lifelong united couple. Their evening has started, they are locating each other to once again unite and share their bird life, a mystery to me.
I hear this all summer coming in my bedroom window from the lakes across the street. There is no other bird that can sing such a haunting song. A loons cry is what made me fall in love with northern Michigan. Thank you for posting such a beautiful video.
being Dutch I never heard a bird making such a haunting sound. Not sure yet what to think of it because it is quite a scary sound to hear since it reminds me of wolves, but then again: it is very beautiful. BTW, a fanfic about world war Z brought me here. The author mentioned loons and I looked it up.
As a kid I fell in love with the sound as soon as I heard it. They were demoing recordings of them at some curiosity store in Niagara Falls and I begged my parents to buy me a copy of it. Never found them particularly scary, but there is a bit of a sad "siren's call" feel to it. If you want scary though, listen to elk mating calls. They sound like something from Jurassic Park.
The Loon's call is such a beautiful and majestic sound. It reminds me of various fantasy movies during lake scenes. The call of the Loon just conjures up images of a vast and majestic world which is untouched by human hands (for the most part) .
I remember listening to them at night in the summer and often they'd alternated between the mourning call and a laughing call. I always loved listening to them.
The first time I heard a loon, I was an 11 year old visiting my grandparents in Minnesota. They lived on a lake and kept their windows open. Now that I'm an adult, I think the cry of a loon is lovely. As a child, it freaked me out and I woke my poor grandmother up.
Grandpa and I used to listen to these birds quietly together reminds me of him. I'm going to have a common loon tattoo on my left arm in memory of my favorite grandfather.
Brings me back to the long trips to Wisconsin as a kid, going down to the cottage and sitting on the dock with my feet in the water as the sun sets. I miss the nights when the loons were active, calling for one another out on the big open lake. Its nights like those I'll never forget, and nights like those I'll tell my kids about in the future.
A beautiful sound always brings tears to my eyes. I feel lucky to hear this sound all the time as a lifetime resident of Minnesota and an avid traveler of the State.
When hearing this sound I can imagine the cold, wide and foggy landscape of the North with conifers everywhere. I wished these birds lived here in Germany too. That would be beautiful camping experiences by night.
This makes me want to go camping even more! I love waking up in the mornings and hearing the Loons. With some hot cocoa and a morning fire it's a great way to start the day!
I love waking up at the cabin in northern minnesota and sitting outside by the lake listening to the loons. On a sunny, 60 degree morning in July it is the most relaxing noise and there is no where I’d rather be in the world
I've been going to Ely, MN for the last 30 years. "This sound will remain with you for the rest of your life". Absolutely rings true! The common Loon is uncommonly beautiful.
for whatever reason, this sound was used as the death-sound of a particular mushroom like enemy in the videogame Dark Souls. Not to be misunderstood, it worked perfectly as whenever you hear the sound you hear something you would associate with a peaceful environment, and you question the action you took. This sound is used in a perfect scenario in that game, and it is beautiful in itself. so I guess I now know the reason why this particular sound was chosen...
A shopkeeper in Lake George introduced me to loons (as a topic) and he described their call as, "hauntingly beautiful." I couldn't agree more :) Cornell, keep up the good work. Your Merlin app is a work of art! I love what you've created.
I'll never forget my first time ever hearing a loons wail. It was at a cabin on Lake Brandy in Northern Minnesota. The sun had just set, and there was a storm brewing in the distance. Then came the loons beautiful yet sad sounding call. Absolutely chilling.
I always wait to hear the call of the loon when at my cottage in the laurentians here in Quebec. I even see them come to my lake at dusk to feed which is always so special to see.
I was at my friend's cottage in Mount vernon maine last Saturday and we were getting hammered and I passed out on their hammock and fell asleep and the echo of this bird was amazing in the morning hours I wish i could wake up everyday to this bird
Love them! When I was a child we had a cottage in northern Ontario and every morning we would hear loons it was so peaceful! We even got a landline phone that had a loon ringer... until it broke and kept changing to a ducks voice lol.
I remember one time I went camping in far north Minnesota. Ever sence I was 5 I wanted to see a loon but I live in nw Indiana right by the Indiana dunes national lake Shore so the only way I would see them would be migration time in the fall but that is very rare. Anyway when me and my family got to the Campground it was dark and there wasn't a sound...just some wolves hawling in the night. The next morning we got our kayaks and went out on the lake. There was a thick fog and some muskrats swimming around... then all of a sudden vary close a loon whales twice and then slowly swims past my kayak about 15 feet away. I will never forget that.
I also love to gear the mourning dove call. It also sticks with you for the rest of your life. Waking up early on a hot, humid morning to them calling is the best feeling ever.
EraseMeWhole, we live way out in the country. We have coyotes, deer, wild turkeys, wild hogs, etc., but nothing makes me any happier than hearing the mourning doves and the Bob White. I even love the Canada Geese, although the fly from a neighbor's lake to roost in the peach orchards behind our house and honk all night long, I still love it!
Here after hearing this bird call in 4 songs off Doja Cat’s new album Planet Her. Every time one of the songs starts I get a pang in my heart & wanted to know what bird call it was. This beautiful video explaining the call so well filled my heart up, too! 🥰🥲 what a beautiful world we live in. So much emotion in that call.
Thank you for this. The song of the loon is one of my favourite sounds in the world. I heard it all the time when camping as a child. Sadly, where I now live I rarely get to hear them. This was wonderful to hear. 💕💕
I know the old song goes, Hear that lonesome whippoorwill, he could have just as easily wrote the song using a Loon. If you have never been on a secluded mountain lake at dusk and heard this beautiful and haunting sound you really need to. One of God's most amazing creations.
I grew up on the Canadian prairies and frequently heard the loons whenever we went camping in the summer. I always found it to be a comforting sound. I now live in the Vancouver area, and just realized that it's been years since I heard a loon. Needed to find a video, and this landed right where it needed to. Many thanks.
Thank you very much for this wonderful recording of the call of the loons. I've heard them a lot when I've been to British Columbia once. It was one of my favourite sounds and sometimes I miss them here (in Germany). It makes me very happy, your little vid. :-))) Thank you!

thanks for siren head noises
I caught the call this morning on my rainy walk
I love how you articulate the way the loons sound
I was not so knowledgeable & I found your video before putting mine up today!
this is soo cool!
i never knew untill now that its some kind of bird.. i thought it was some kind of a dog(world or something else)
Hahhaha😂😂
It's so eerie and mournful. I love listening to these when camping near lakes.
It might be a skinwalker lol
AVET87 Now that's just creepy.

you my good sir, have summarized loons in two words: eerie and mournful.
First time I heard the Loon was on isle royale in superior, and he’s right, I’ll never forget it.
Yea it’s hard to forget the first time you shit your pants as an adult
Mines was ossawannamakee lake with my boyfriends family. Very beautiful
Same. What a memory.
First time I heard one was in Darkroot Garden in Lordran.
@@prosciutto6 😂😂😂
The howl of the wolf and the call of the loon: few sounds go straight to my soul like those two.
And the elk bugile
Elder One I don’t think Andrewsarchus howled, pet
@Elder One since they were sacred animals admired the Native American tribes
The only things that make me homesick for Minnesota. And the pine trees.
Joyce Brady so true!!!!
Absolutely, my friend!
This is so true
so true
i didn't realise you said "lover" when i first read this. disappointing :(
So, the mournful call of the loon is actually a beautiful game of marco polo.
Clever! (And poetic)
Ya basically
Too funny!
Same thing, really. Haha...
a game of _awoo-ah woo_
As someone who grew up in Maine where lakes are numerous, the loon call is a very nostalgic sound for me.
Totally! I also grew up in Maine lol
Hauntingly beautiful....
Also it’s in spore
Try waking up at 2 in the morning to go fishing. You will hear a ton of these.
Like elks
I am 67 now and have been a canoe tripper all my life. This loon call, and the joyful sounds of children at play, are my favorite sounds in this world.
I’m 40 years younger than you Rick, but I hope to become like you as I grow older. You have a good soul. I wish you well.
Apologies for late reply - would really enjoy living close to you, a conversation. My wife and I enjoy the sounds of children and nature.
❤❤❤
am I the only one that gets chills listening to this? it's magical!
Many solo canoe trips in the Adirondacks listening to my friends.
I definitely do to
I tear up oh the memories....
When I first heard it 3 years ago after moving to Maine, it gave me the chills.
no your not the only im so scared rn
Alot of movies make this sound eerie and creepy but I always find it relaxing, and calming since it means your in the wilderness
I get your hidden message.
There are mines in the nature,
But who put them there...🤔🤫
It's very relaxing.
The cry of a Loon or the laugh of a Kookaburras are the most awesome sounds in nature or two of my favorites
The sound of a loon is heard in the movie Shutter Island during a dream scene
You best remember well, nature is not your friend.
at night, not knowing what this was, scared the shit out of me.
Matt Pulley haha unfortunate, I have always known that loons sounded similar to wolves and when at my cottage can distinguish the two
cave sounds except their lake sounds
I nearly shit my pants thinking they were wolves. When I finally got to my car and relaxed a bit, I realized they were probably just loons😂
Still does knowing what it is
These birds' calls embody the spirit of the wilderness. It's so hard to explain, but it just gives you this heavy feeling in your chest whenever you hear them.

Eric Sterwerf I can only imagine! It’s my only wish rn to be able to listen to their calls. It’d be heaven
MoundShroud Creations yes great memories: i heared them when paddling the big salmon river at sandy lake, totally calmness, first sounds in the morning, just before sunrise
Yes, it is as close to heaven as we can get here on earth.

This is something on my bucket list, hearing these birds call while the sun sets I can’t imagine how peaceful it would be
State bird of Minnesota. Beautiful, haunting sound.
One of my favorite birds, absolutely love camping near some Lake, specially in northern Minnesota. And hearing them call out.
It's also the provincial bird of Ontario! Loon enthusiasts UNITE! 😂😍
It's also what Canadian 1 dollars are named after
Try Maine.
The unofficial State Bird of Minnesota is the mosquito.
Lived in Minnesota as a kid and go back to my grandparents Every year, always love hearing the loons on the lake.
Hello brother
I remember hearing these as a kid and thinking they were coyotes
Davin Schon omg yeah, i thought it was wolves and got excited cause i loved wolves X3
I hear them right now I thought they were coyotes and my mother told me they were loons guess I was wrong
Tori IKR OMFG.
They kinda sound like coyotes..
I thought they were wolves and I remember being in bed at the cottage, kind of creeped out lol
To hear these beautiful sounds, is on my bucket list.
What a fantastic sound! It is so beautiful and mysterious at the same time. Like a wolf that turned into a bird. Wow!
yes
Exactly!
Yeah exactly
That's a lovely way to say it.
I was fortunate enough on one occasion to have a pair of loons come within 30 ft of my canoe. The sound of conversation among themselves was truly unforgettable.
it is a sad sound. beautiful but sad a beacon to a lost love. it is not a crazy or loony sound like i expected. this is why i love birds.
It's not sad to me...it is communication between a lifelong united couple. Their evening has started, they are locating each other to once again unite and share their bird life, a mystery to me.
They have a few different sounds - their tremelo is the looney sound you were expecting.
You should see them run accross the water though! Made me break out in laughter :)) "What a Loon!"
I was thinking the same thing...I know it's really a happy sound, but it just sounds so mournful...
I always take a walk by the lake during sunset just to hear these magical sounds….Minnesota HOME.
I hear this all summer coming in my bedroom window from the lakes across the street. There is no other bird that can sing such a haunting song. A loons cry is what made me fall in love with northern Michigan. Thank you for posting such a beautiful video.
Nona Yabizness if it made you love Michigan because of that Minnesota would be heaven
I was out there my grandparents house in Texas and I heard two loons it was the most beautiful sound I ever heard
@@clorbach2450 You're welcome. Love, Canada.
It's a reminder of home for me.. Currently living in New Mexico but from Minnesota.. The sound brings back so many memories.
I'll never forget my childhood evenings watching the sun set over the lake at our cottage and listening to the calls of the loons.
That sounds great! I wish i would have been in a place like that as well!
These are hauntingly beautiful birds with bright red eyes

Stupid world z has nothing to do with this.
Birds can be quite haunting. I'm fond of the mourning dove myself.
I live in Michigan, the first time I heard it when I was a kid I remember tearing up a little because I loved the sound.
My favourite bird call/song.

Dark Jedi Wow, it is so rare to find such a nice and poetic comment on UA-cam.
Very Intelligent Comment
I remember listening to them at night in the summer and often they'd alternated between the mourning call and a laughing call. I always loved listening to them.
there is a movie with Henry and Jane Fonda and Katherine Hepburn you must watch! i think it‘s title is golden lake ? :)) R

It's a sound and feeling you will never forget. It's stayed with me since childhood when the family would go to our northern cottage.
Same here.
Amazingly beautiful and peaceful moments seen these birds.
I used to live by a lake, and I used to love opening my window at night and just listening to them. Their howls are just so beautiful.
Beautiful world. Thank you for this music. Also TY Russel Brand. Stay free
I grew up with this beautiful and mysterious song as the soundtrack to my summers in Maine. It's so dear to me that it's almost like a lullaby now.
The gifts of this world never cease to astound me with their beauty! This is one of those gifts!
I almost sounds like they are calling "Where aaaare you?" Beautiful.
they look as magical as they sound
Lovely video! Used to hear them when my late husband & I used to visit our Ontario Halliburton’s & Algonquin Park. Cheers!

I just love nature and this is why you cant get a more beautiful sound than birds and mammals calling
This makes me want to go camping even more! I love waking up in the mornings and hearing the Loons. With some hot cocoa and a morning fire it's a great way to start the day!
Not only are they gorgeous birds, the noise they make is just so awe inspiring
Just made my cry.. I remember being at my grand-papa's cabin on the island.. This took me back completely and now I'm just sobbing.. Thanks
I love waking up at the cabin in northern minnesota and sitting outside by the lake listening to the loons. On a sunny, 60 degree morning in July it is the most relaxing noise and there is no where I’d rather be in the world
The beautiful lonely wail of the solitary loon. Beautiful.....lifts your spirit ......longing call of the loon. Natures wonder...Gods gift. 🎶

Such a magically eerie feeling. Brings me back to my days growing up at our cabin vacation home at Lake Almanor in Cali, Plumus County region.
Haunting calls , wonderful birds .
Always head up to the adirondacks near old forge every year. I always love the spirited call loons make as it echoes across the lake.
