I think there’s a huge misconception about finding your calling. Life isn’t a Disney movie where you just follow your heart. Your calling will not fall on your lap. You have to go out and try different things to find out what you enjoy or what you’re good at. One of the most important things that a mentor told me after I graduated high school is: “You don’t have to know what you’re meant to do, just don’t stop moving until you find it.”
Exactly. Your job doesn’t have to be your whole life. Find something that will pay the bills and fund your passions! I enjoyed chemistry so I became a chemist, but I’m not PASSIONATE about it, I simply enjoy playing with chemicals and working in a lab away from the public. I put in my solid 40 hour week and the rest of the time I check out to do what I actually love.

I have the exact opposite problem. I was a tv kid so growing up being told I can be “whatever I want” so I was interested in writing, drawing, comics, animation ya know all that shit. But I have to go through a whole lot of bullshit to make that happen. It’s the best time to be an independent artist but I need something to fall back on because it’s not that stable # 1 and # 2 you give your work to a studio and it’s just a whole bunch of bullshit (look what happened to Final Space) and now I’m grown being “oh wanna be a writer? Meeeeeh … maybe.” And a whole other shit of personal problems I have

@@capitanawesome44 the real danger in the way our culture works is that most people "learn" to live paycheck to paycheck. Add 300K worth of student debt to that then tack on a 300K mortgage and then marry someone else with 300K worth of student loans and you have a recipe for corporate slavery. The habit of having debt costs a whole lot more than the actual amount ( interest included)

My grandfather never graduated from high school. He became a radio operator in the Army during WWII when the previous operator was killed. He took that experience and taught himself radio repair after the war. He later learned television repair also. He built that into a very successful business which he sold in the 1970's to retire in his 50's. He then worked as a consultant to a large electronics company part time for a very large salary. With no formal education he was able to create wealth that is still funding our family to this day. His path cannot be replicated today and that is a problem.
Yeah...stories like your grandfathers was given to him partly because of the war. Opportunities were around every corner and there is a reason it was called the golden years of America. We don't have a great war. His story isn't 90% percent of peoples story now. You a e extremely lucky, very fortunate if you can be anywhere close to what your grandfather accomplished.
He got experience. Many employers WANT that experience over non-experience with a degree. The person with yrs under their belt is way more reliable.
My wife ain't graduate HS! But she worked her ass off. She learned quick, was managing a bank around 18 yrs old, decided to go to the medical field and is getting positions where they state "must have X degree". She ain't got college. She has that experience and runs circles around these people with a degree and no experience, which employers prefer.
I wish I could say the same for me, but just like your grandfather, I was in the Army too but I was medically retired. Now, I just do shit for my enjoyment, nothing too serious or career worthy.
Many of our predicessors path's cannot be replicated. Sorta like great things only happen once in a life time type of deal! Our generation sadly has to find other means to get by because most of the great inventions are already made & thus left many w/o any ideas to create a path of themselves in the New Age. Seems like we're really in the Shadow's of the people before us. With tech taking our jobs even, I'd say you lucked out my friend. Take advance of out, but don't abuse your grandfather's hard earned wealth!

You can even become a shooting instructor @ a shooting range or a bouncer even. I was in JROTC in my HS, but never joined. Wished I did, but I decided college due to pressure from family
So I've done university twice now. First time I was 19 and was academically expelled because, like you guys said, I was young and a mess. I had severe social anxiety and depression and zero life skills. My room was consistently disgusting, I could hardly feed myself, I almost never had fresh clothes and I almost never left my dorm room. I was absolutely fucked. Luckily, because I was only in for a year the debt was negligible. However, my parents weren't so understanding. They basically said "heres the last thing we'll do for you as a child" handed me an application for the Navy and gave me a year to move out.
10 years and a 7 year stint in the Navy later I'm now on my second go at Uni. I'm on the deans list with straight A's. My room is small (I live with 3 roomies to keep costs low) but immaculate and well kept. I eat well, exercise routinely and I've been through enough counseling to deal with my social anxiety. Although my social life is pretty non-existent right now due to school and working part time, I know I now have the tools to make connections when the time comes. I have no debt and because of my time in the military I will attain my degree with money to spare.
I suppose in all I'm just trying to say for any of the young guys who might be reading this: you can change. You will fail in life and you will fail hard. But these failures don't need to define you and you have the ability to pick yourself up and overcome who you were. Stay strong young bros, I love you guys.

Condeycon. I don't know if you will ever see this but I relate INCREDIBLY well to your first paragraph. It reminds me so much of myself. However, I'm still in the very slow process of getting my things together as a 25 year old after failing college in my first year when I was 19. I lack so much life skills, it's insane. I don't even know how to iron my clothes and I still live with my mom being unemployed...

It is not just that anymore. I had a writing class more focused on teaching women's history.
Two of my writing classes were like this. I learned less about the ideas behind writing than I did about what woman did what.
I got one assignment wrong only because I provided the wrong opinion, nothing about punctuation, sentence structure, choice of words, etc.
It is not right my GPA dropped from that.
And nothing I could do change that.
Even my speech class, the professor in some cases were more interested in "correcting" the topic than giving advice for talking aloud amongst a group.
The irony of that class, it got worse when it went fully online and my "professor" struggled to communicate with me.

The High School to College pipeline scam should collapse. No way the world should be pressuring 17 & 18 year olds to make a choice that vast majority of them arent ready to make. The way a lot of highschool educators and counsellors are complicit & often get rewarded for encouraging that pressure. Also most parents dont get how much of a scam it is, especially those from immigrant backgrounds.

Not necessarily. I'm am American and I got accepted into a college in Taiwan that costs $2,000 USD a year. It is just they charge you in USA your first born and half a million in debt for any grad degree. Go abroad. Also if you are in a specilazed field the Ministry of Education will pay you like $12,000 a year as a scholarship.

As a college student who actually needs college to do what I want to do in life, college is ridiculous. A lot of the professors make it hard for you to even enjoy the path you’re taken. I feel robbed on a daily basis. Like I’m paying to be stressed out and the professors are basically like “Welp get used to it, the real world is stressful.” Also, the fact that I still had to spend 4 years in college dispute coming into college with a little over a semester’s worth of credits. The Gen. Ed they tack on is CRAZY. I feel like the way colleges are ran will change because they won’t be able to get away with this crazy shit if less people are interested in going to college.

Yup, I learned 100x more when I started working than in university. Was a total waste of my time. Most degrees should be targeted apprenticeships and 2 years max.
I had to take dozens of classes that had nothing to do with my major. My husband has a trade and makes 5x as much as I do doing environmental contamination study and water safety monitoring. His trade degree cost 10k total.
Im so glad this video came out when it did. My parents are immigrants, and you absolutely hit the head on the nail of the coffin with what I’ve had to deal with. I accumulated 30k of debt, being forced to pursue something that I didn’t want for myself and I finally decided to just leave school. I even got kicked out of the house for making the decision i made, but I’m so glad I’m not alone in having to experience this or feel this way. I currently have all of my stuff in my car and I’m moving down south with a friend. It’s definitely going to be the hardest life has ever been, but I’m glad it’ll be on my terms.

I didn't drop out. I got the stupid law degree, worked in law for six years and hated it, and then went through a career change. Feel like I lost a lot of years and wish they had let me figure out what I wanted to do instead.
Those guys that don't go to college aren't just sitting around doing nothing. A lot are going the trade route. They're finally realizing that having an actual skill is more viable. You have plenty of young millionaires that have come into their riches from a skill they possess.
In college's defense there are plenty of 'actual skills' that you can learn there too. Is civil engineering not an 'actual skill'? And on top of that, the vast majority of rich people own degrees / went to college. Granted, you could chalk to this up to the fact that most rich people had rich parents and could afford it.

@@kevinmatta9262 the average person with a college degree is only making 55k which is not much money at all. PLUS they have student loans which is even less money in there pockets. So that means on average people in the trades actually have more money in their pockets every month than a person that went to college. My trades job pays me 60k in florida and I don't really have much debt and I'm doing waaay better than my old classmates that got their degree that they are not even using. College only have a handful of majors that can make you very good money. If you are not in those majors, than you are wasting your time there.

I know how to program and I have networking skills, but I think I could've skipped all of the other things and just focus on those skills. It would've saved me more money and time.

On the flip side though the one major difference we have in the UK is barely anyone ever pays their tuition in full, and its hardly a fraction of typical costs in the US.
That being said, seems a lot of people go to uni for the sake of going, but I think the job market is to blame for that since degrees are now expected in jobs where they aren't even necessary 🤷♂️
Lawyers though. The whole law system is a giant self licking ice cream cone extortion racket. I didn't know what I wanted to do straight out of high school and I knew I wasn't smart enough for STEM subjects, so I started an apprenticeship as a carpenter. After a few years I attained my Red Seal with no debt and I'm currently enrolled in community college for management courses. Life is good. Not everyone is cut out for college and not everyone knows what they want to do right away, and that's perfectly fine.
Congratulations on your accomplishments. People forget we still need people in your field and other “blue collar “ fields. I know electricians and welders that make more than nurses. So the money is there also.
Community college gets bad rep sometimes but it actually saves so much time and money because people can research which majors they want more and take the preq classes and then just transfer to an accredited university.

Don't need a college degree to be a computer engineer. UA-cam university is enough. In this industry skills and willingness to work hard opens doors more than papers.

@@charlesngeno Yes, that is true, but the stats say that generally the bachelors helps, and with scholarships and some hard work, you can pay under 10-15k in student debt out of college, which is less than the hiring bonuses that most of the students I have mentored end up getting. Now obviously I am a big supporter of working part-time in the industry while in school and spending summers scoring those good industry internships so that you can build a network.
It really depends on what you plan to do with the degree. If you’re doing Engineering out of curiosity or because you’re bored, your degree is worthless. If you’re doing Psychology because you actually want to be a clinical therapist, it’s much more valuable.

I’m in highschool but this summer I worked at a lumberyard with a guy that dropped out of community college after 1 year. He always hated school, and hated college too, but his parents pressured him into going in the first place. His parents had a sizeable college fund for him, and now he is using it for pilots lessons to get his pilots license, and it seems like he is really interested in it and enjoying it. Good to see someone make a good choice for themselves.
A pilots license is still a good investment on a marketable skill though
Man every body needs at least 2 flight school classes in my opinion. I learned alot more in an hour at 2000 feet than I did in four years of undergrad. You can’t bullshit and buzzword your way through a landing or recovery

They did 20 years and came out with military pensions, one is a certified government CRN Nurse(Sister), one is a podiatrist work for a major practice. NO DEBT, and 20 years of medical experience. They travel and WORK in many hospitals and medical facilities around the world. They said the biggest thing their employer always asks them is "Do have some hands-on experience in this field. College is not for everyone

Dude, you can't be a field medic in the military and then go be an MD (Podiatrist) or CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the civilian world without earning the college degrees required. Your sister requires a Masters to be a CRNA and we all know what it takes to be an MD.

Spot on dudes. Easily 80% of my degree was fluff that I could have learned by myself online. Thankfully, it worked out for me by doing multiple internships and keeping my debt low by working all the way through, but it's a waste of time and money for a ton of people. Only go to college if you have a plan for how to make it happen, don't think it'll automatically make life better for you, because it can actually make things a lot worse..

@@mememachine5244 My degree is in Criminal Justice, and I do actually work in that field, so I can't completely knock the utility of college. The thing is that almost all the value I got from college was through internships; the classes I took - even within my major - were rarely related to anything I wanted to do professionally. For the money I spent, that seems pretty unacceptable.

I dropped out of high school and got my GED. Then I joined the army, went to college, grad school, and now I am a math professor at a large university. Everyone has their own path. You probably won't "find yourself" until you are at least in your 30s.
It's not really about finding yourself, it's about building oneself. And that can only happen with time and experience, not by forcing a college degree by taking out an insane student loan.

Going straight to a University after high school is honestly an unrealistic expectation to push upon people that are so young. University is romanticized and I feel other options are never spoken of in a positive light when transitioning from high school (i.e trade school or community college.)

As someone who did just that, I can confirm it's a tad unrealistic, I changed majors three times and spent more time and mo ey in Univeristy because of it, instead of maybe taking that wasted year and use it as a gap year traveling around the world, now I'm stuck "working for the man" with no real way of traveling anywhere near the way I would've after high school while still leaning on my parents. You literally have to be unemployed or some tycoon who wakes up and makes money to properly travel
I personally was going to go to law school or med school when I got out of high school but ended up working before that and, after getting some work experience, I decided to take a pay cut for the job security and set hours of a career as a tradesman. I'm going to school for Welding and the cost of school is SIGNIFICANTLY lower, and I get to leave my work AT work when I start working so I'm good in my decision

When I was in high school I got lucky enough to be given a full scholarship to unc Charlotte if I played for there soccer team since I’m pretty good, my parents went crazy at the idea I could go to college for free. The thing is I always played soccer as a hobby and I hated the idea of making soccer my job so I turned down the scholarship and instead went to welding school. I now make 82k a year after 3 years of welding experience.
Dude, where I live there's a MONSTER demand for welders like you cannot believe. Nope, "me wanna be a reporter/lawyer/manager/whatever". All but lawyers have a harder time finding a job. Welders have a line forming in front of them to see who gets the welder (figure of speech).

People pushed me to do art at college & as it was my favourite subject at school, I gave it ago but reached the same conclusion as you, I like it as a hobby but not my career. A lot of people say they end up not liking a subject when they make it their main focus.

They are valuable because you are always going to need people to fix and build. Many make a great living. Most require on the job training or a training at a trade school. The trade schools in my community are connected to the high school. My daughter graduated high school this year with a trade job making $24 per hour and full benefits and no student loan debt.

I really think college is basically a scam outside of STEM degrees. Also, as a person who has dropped out of college twice (so far) I would not recommend anyone to go to school for a degree that they’re are only “kinda interested” in.
My biggest issue is the "required" subjects. I tried college for IT. Why do I have to pay for a humanities class for a degree in IT? Why do I have to study English literature for a degree in IT? While I believe that knowledge is great and I have always encouraged my children to learn all they can, there is an abundance of free information and I see no need to have to pay thousands of dollars for it.

I have a 17 year old son who knew that college wasn’t his jam; he just doesn’t enjoy school that much. Instead, he has decided he wants to go to a trade school to learn blacksmithing. I’m beyond proud of him for avoiding the same trap that I fell into. I spent years and years in college, I have $60K in student debt, and for the past 20 years I’ve worked in a job that doesn’t use my degree at all. Funny, I recall my professors in college telling us how in-demand we were going to be and how we would be able to name our price and pick and choose our jobs - it was all lies. Learn a trade, kids. And avoid student loans!

I think there is a bigger fish to fry with this, the fact that this modern world pushes college so hard as the only way to make good money is maddening. They don’t push trades too much in a lot public schools anymore, especially when alot of these types of jobs needs experience and such too. We need to give those choices of consideration to our next generation for sure. Nothing wrong with wanting to learn a tradable skill.

I don't have a college degree but make decent money as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry. Though I may go back and get an associates degree I think people fail to understand the difference between entry level pay and potential earnings after you've been in an industry for 3 or 4 years. There can be a significant difference between the two. I also think people need to take time to consider how much the lifestyle they desire to live this going to cost. The lifestyle I want to live doesn't necessarily require me to ever make $100,000 a year so I don't really have to make a killing. Lifestyle choice and the location someone decides to live in are usually major factor that should be considered when it comes to what kind of earnings they pursue.
Most of the successful people I know are in a trade and/or own a business. Many of them either have no degree or aren't using their degree at all.
Your last sentence is an example of how these messages are being communicated badly. By saying "nothing wrong," there's an implied stigma, like it's a professional choice that needs to be justified or defended. The message needs to be more aggressively positive, like "the country needs more people in these good jobs, if you've got what it takes."

I went to college straight out of hs, had no idea what I wanted to do. Took a bunch of random classes and majored in the field I was getting As in. Ended up staying an extra semester to get a second degree because I only needed a few more classes anyways. Graduated and couldn't find a job in either field that paid more than minimum wage. I literally got paid more at my retail job 🙃 Now I'm back in school, paying full tuition because I maxed out my financial aid. Going into healthcare and picked a field of study that's going to triple my investment within a year of working. Just took 7 years after high school to figure it all out smh

I went to school for accounting because I did not know what I wanted to do. When I was failing, I switched over to operations, which only kind of interested me. Now I am working with a company that hardly invests in me. At this point, I realize that I may never actualize my potential in what I do if my heart is not in it.
I am one of these men. I'm 19 and was able able to move out right after high school with money saved up from working fast food. Left and worked as a solar installer, didn't like it. I found a job as a gutter installer and I love it. By next year I will be making 60k with no debt and I'd like to start my own business in the field in the next 10 years. Sure, it's not a 6 figure job, but I can see myself in a great position in the future if I continue to aggressively save and invest. (And also if I don't fall off a big ass ladder and die) I see value in experiencing my adult life this early, instead of accumulating college debt just to find out I don't like what I'm doing and waste all those years.

Graduated in 2019 and took some time off and enlisted as a Marine Reservist so I could go to school and hopefully become a Doctor. I was recently diagnosed with B cell ALL leukemia and it’s been a motivation ever since and I think I really found my calling. As a 1st gen Mexican-American, it’s okay to take some time off post high school and decide what you want to do ! Whatever y’all do I support y’all Kings and Queens ! 💙

I'm 3 years into college studying IT. My college is an overpriced Internet cafe. Its focusing more on theory than practical and those 3 years would've been better spent just using Internet resources to teach myself...but I was 17 when I made the decision and now 21 year old me has to live with it. It is what it is but I would definitely recommend waiting a year or two before applying for college, put yourself out into the world and get the mental growth that the school system could never instil in you.

There’s a lot of of free class but a lot of them are not complete or lack structure. What I would do to people who learn by themselves was to tell them what to learn in order because some free class literally put you in the middle of computer science.
There’s also, this false confidence when you learn from “4hours to learn C++” video, just because you’re able to “copy” from a video doesn’t mean you can code on your own well for example.
Not to say it’s impossible to learn on free class, I could have easily substitute my Uni time for free classes (went to college and University) but pretty sure I would have lack skill if I didn’t went to college. Not from the states so college for me was 400~ a year so at that price its “almost free” and yea free classes beat Uni if you have dedication.

I'm 36 and am in college for the third time. I wasn't ready when I was 18. Tried again when I was 29 and life got in the way. It's tough and our K-12 education system is woefully inadequate. Thus why most of college is trying to get you up to speed.
K-12's isn't to prepare you for college. It's not even there to prepare us for adulthood. It's mostly there for training purposes. It's not for educating. More like a prison to make money off you filling a seat and train you on how to conduct yourself in work society.
My brother and girlfriend kind of opened my eyes about college. For a while after I graduated, I always wanted to persue college because I wanted to make my parents proud. I knew college debt was an issue with a lot of people and I come from a family of low income and I would be a first generation college student in my entire family. So for a while, I had a lot of pressure on me. There's one side of me that's saying "Finish your school, finish college and get that degree and make your entire family proud!" Then there's the other side of me saying "No, don't do it, you're fresh out of high school with no idea of what you want to do in life or even major in when in college. So don't give yourself unnecessary debt!"
My girlfriend got her degree recently, but she's almost $40k in debt and still isn't sure of what she wants to do in life and she regrets going to college and being in debt for a degree she probably won't use.
My brother is a senior in high school and one time he told me, "When they showed us all these amazing colleges and all the positives of going to college and getting a degree, I wondered, what about the negatives? I'm hearing only good things, but where are the bad things? Nothing is only ever good. Besides, I don't want to put myself in debt. I'll go when I'm ready and know what I want to do."
I am 21 and now a senior in college in the US. Like many others, I didn’t know what I wanted to do at 18 but basically went in to college because everyone in my family looked at me to do so. However, while I was there I constantly thought this. I didn’t know what I wanted but I made the steps to get into a nice program for something I do enjoy and take pride in. I got an internship from this too and love the job and the people I work with. It doesn’t pay very well, but for right now, it works. If any of you were like me and went to college not knowing what you want to do or where your interests are, work towards figuring it out now. Don’t waste your time and money if college is not right for you. If you find out there is something a college can provide that you are passionate about then I say pursue it. But you really have to dig deep and find what inspires, and interests you, and that might mean leaving college, and that’s ok.
I can relate I didn't know what to do and my family suggested university and I said sure why not, still don't know why I came here but I'm still young I can always make changes

I would agree with that, but also make sure you pick a career that is employable. Many people will get a degree in some sort of fine arts and end up jobless, unless they somehow manage to make art that sells substantial enough that you can make a living. Those jobs just a general pelo unless you hit it big and sometimes people choose their passion over marketability which is fine. We treat education as if it's some sort of capitalistic exploit when it isn't and it doesn't have to be. People go into Fine Arts because some people's goal is to be a fine arts teacher or to be an academic or historian of Fine Arts or to work in the Fine Arts industry for entertainment industry. It's not just them selling art so I think you don't have a full understanding of what the jobs are in that field in the first place

I was told what do I want to be when I grow up or you can be anything you want to be. That's a big load of hogwash!!!!! The fact that it isn't free and that colleges were still charging full prices for online classes would be a major issue as well. University isn't affordable and unattainable.
This is exactly why I dropped out. Paying full tuition to get sent home and sit on my laptop for a quarter of the day.
Making the government pay for it doesn't solve the corrupt structure that has more administrators than actual teachers, or solve the fact that most people don't even enter a profession in their degree's field.
High tuition prices are a DIRECT result of student loans from the government. Artificially low interest rates and they give em out to anyone. Meaning, universities can charge whatever the fuck they want, because they know anyone can go 100k in debt to pay for it if you convince them they "need" to.
With private loans, where the ones giving you money have a vested interest in making a return, don't give out massive loans to anyone and everyone.
Tuition inflation to this degree wouldn't be possible without government loans. Government paying for it is exactly the issue.
Supply and demand. Typically cost is a prohibitive to endless demand as not everyone can afford any price. This sort of thing causes what's called downward pressure on prices. Gotta try and keep your product affordable if you want customers.
Introduce government loans and now anyone can go 100k in debt regardless of their likelihood to pay it back. Guess now what the university charges for their degree?
Ironically I spent an entire semester working on a report about the above before I decided to drop out. Persuaded myself it was a waste of money.

The success/happiness rate of college graduates would be much higher if college wasn't pushed at 18. I think you should enter college at like 23-25. I started at 18 and: 1. I should have went to a community college for the first two years (general ed is basically the same no matter where you go but the cost at a community college is like 20% of the cost of a big University), 2. I had no idea what I wanted to do/be and 3. Didn't have the maturity/life lessons to even start trying to figure out my career at that age. It's a joke that a 17 year old is seen as a kid that doesn't know anything but when you turn 18 you're an adult that has to plan/figure out the career you want for the rest of your life to be successful? I got a Communications degree after switching from a Finance major cause I didn't like it and thought I'll have more "creative" jobs with this Comms major. Fast forward 12 years I work in the Finance sector (surprise, surprise) and love it while other Comms majors I know are sales driven careers and I HATE sales (worked as a sales banker for 3-4 years before I got the job I have now). I wish I could start college later in life cause I think I would have been more successful in obtaining that finance degree for a much higher paying 9-5 job. Now I'm not saying I didn't learn anything with this degree and didn't gain value, but I think I wouldn't have had to play the catch up game if starting later in school to gain some life experience. But then again, I consider myself one of the lucky ones. Others not so much.
Best advice i ever got from college was from my Math Professor from Gremany "Take some time off. Figure out what you want to do. Stop trying to race through college, you americans keep stressing yourselves out too much." Took the entire following semester off. Needed it to just get out of that massive ditch that was just being burnt out. Was exactly what I needed for my mental health, and was able to finish it out from there from just a bit of time to think and refocus.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from but that wouldn't work for American society. If you start college at 23-25, you're almost 30 when you graduate (more if you need grad school or an advanced degree like for doctor, lawyer, etc). That would mean you don't become established in your career until you're almost 40. As I mentioned in a separate post, I realized early on that the first two years of university are a huge scam because you're not learning what you want to learn which is why I had my niece circumvent the whole thing (GED to community college to university). A bigger problem is that a large number of degrees are worthless when you consider how limited the market is for the skillset they teach. If you're graduating with 200k in debt, an Art History degree is not likely to pay for itself like a Finance or Accounting degree will. And yet people still pursue these dead end degrees and wind up drowning in debt they can't pay off.
Well back in the day people _did_ have it figured out at 18. Many already had their careers in mind. Remember people were married in their early 20s/late teens. Now everyone doesn’t think they are ready to be adults until 30.
Going to college for a business degree is insane. Everyone is going for business. Like wtf does that even mean? Could you pick a more vague degree? I plan on my kids knowing fairly well what they want to do as an adult. I had to almost fail HS, join the military, try for an engineering degree, dropped out, deployed, got out the Army, floated for 8 years at BS jobs and now I’m a certified HVAC Tech with a career in the horizon. As a Marine veteran who now goes to an Ivy League school, I can tell you that if I wasn’t getting free college AND getting paid to be here (tax free), I would not have gone to this school. I am also in my last year here. I have friends here who are freaking out about being 250k+ in debt just after four years for an undergrad program. I’m glad that I’m graduating with the same paper but with zero debt. If I had to pay, I’d rather be in a community college for 2 years, get my associate’s degree, and then transfer to a small uni or state school. This is the most cost efficient method IMO.

College isn't for everyone. The way they set up these institutions cater to a way only certain people learn. As long as you develop a skill you're fine. There are certifications and hands on training that you can go through that will get you a job making more than someone who went to college.

Yup! Honestly, I mentioned this in another comment, after high school I could’ve just went to community college and did prerequisites for almost nothing and then transferred to a university later. I’m grateful that I haven’t racked up debt at all but just time and stress right now is a lot.
I dropped out of a psych major with a 3.6 at Florida State university. I was DONE arguing with professors who felt the need to present the sick theories of Freud and other mental historic figures as if they were fact.
Not to mention every female professor I had was preaching feminist theory. I now work on a tow truck flipping junk cars and make more than I would have made as a psychologist.

I went into the military and got into IT. Best decision of my life. I’m now a software tester working on a development team. I’m learning Python programming at the moment so I can become a test engineer. You don’t need to join the military to get into IT. Start off as a help desk technician and work your way from there. Or if you can problem solve and critical think learn a programming language. Information security jobs are abundant. Companies are having a hard time filling those jobs.

I have disability and can’t do military. I have CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Server+, and Linux+ I know Python, Java, and C, I got my education completely free by proving my IT skills for a program. No one, not even help desk wants to hire me without 5 years experience. Yet I am being offered way more high paying office work jobs that I hate. I just wanna give up but I love computers more anything. It’s been 6 years of schooling for nothing though. Maybe it’s just sunk cost fallacy.

Of all of the trouble I did get into, financial trouble wasn't one of them.
I relate to that phrase so much... "I just feel so lost" Throughout my four years in high school, and the next four years in university, it always felt like what I was learning didn't matter, but my family would continually tell me that that was the way. Now I actually know what I want (I always wanted to write a story, so I started writing a web novel series at the start of the lockdowns and have gotten nice results and enjoyed my time with this hobby), and if I had started years ago before any of this instead of being told that was a wrong path and a stupid one, I think id be much less depressed than I am now.

This was one of my #1 complaints that went unheard now I don't even complain that they don't hear me anymore. I don't bother complaining at all anymore. School was killing me draining me but I did a work internship that paid me nothing but taught me so damn much and it was the absolute most fun I've ever had in my entire life then I started getting paid and it was even better. But now after everything the emptiness just eats up all the energy and happiness the little bit we can get our hands on. The worst part for people who have to live this kind of life is you will never be living just surviving till you finally get to die and not deal with it anymore. I'm not trying to be pessimistic or downtrodden just brutally honest. People like us don't want to be happy or successful anymore we just want to die in peace where the issues we had resolved or not, simply don't affect us because we've removed the problem itself or ourself from them. This is the world we live in and it's a sad one. But at the very least at least there are those of us that can understand each other and strive to survive. Stay strong and go out on your terms!

Spinster epidemic. I've been thinking about this for about 2 years now. We Millenials are going to be in our 40s entering an era of single moms and overeducated spinsters regretting they didn't have children and a family.
We already know what the end result will be. Just look at Japan. Men and Women make about the same amount there, and unemployment is more common among young men in japan. Their birth rates are extremely low, not even replacing themselves. Women will NEVER date down, it doesn't matter if it's their only option, because it's not, they would rather share a high value man, or be alone for their entire lives. This is the present and the future. This bubble will burst and I have no idea what comes after that, but likely a return to a more traditional culture, mainly because the only people having kids are more traditionally minded individuals, the modern lifestyle will go extinct because they aren't having children. This is just me speculating of course, who knows, it'll be interesting to watch though.

I think young men are realizing they can make more earlier in life if they either pick a trade or just start working. My son is 19, he makes $20/hr, is fully insured, has a 401k. His friends are either at University or moved to "the city" and are working retail for $13/hr (min wage here). My kid will own a house and retire before his friends if he just keeps his head down and works hard.

I'm in my second to last semester, I had to push my Fall graduation to Spring because I haven't completed all the classes I needed.
Right now, I'm burnt out. A year and 6 months before the lockdown started, I was going to school in person and since then I've been doing online school.
Before the lockdown I had a goal to accomplish in terms of a degree and getting a job, now I'm feeling like I'm in limbo of what I want in life because of the Pandemic. At the moment, I'm just trying to get out of school and then take a year off to figure out whats next for me. He's been staying with us and her back and forth for awhile now since July, recently though, his maternal aunt just had a newborn so he's been staying over longer so she can recover. It was a successful birth and we're just happy their both ok.
We're looking into daycare for him at the moment, it's just taking time because me and my sisters are busy with Uni (Online work) and my mom is working as well.
It's a struggle but I'll get through it.

I am the only full time college student, so it's very hard. The guilt is there too when you're not putting enough time for them. Also, I am pursuing computer science.

I wish I had a parent like you. My parents are currently forcing me to go to college and if I don't they've treatend to kick me out and we get into heated arguments whenever I try to talk to them. Its ironic because both of my parents never went to college yet they have it pretty decently for themselves. I know for a fact that I don't want to be a biomedical engineer for the rest of my life even if it pays extremely well. I realize they are doing it because they want whats good for me, but I feel like if I were to take a lot more time into taking the opportunities the internet has in terms of marketing and start a business then I could potentially get a way bigger head start in life instead of waiting until I'm 23 and finished with a bachelors to start.
I took the year off to launch my LLC and venture in entrepreneurship and business at 21, and by the looks of it, I won’t be going back to school anytime soon. Law school and being an attorney just seemed more unlikely as I advanced through my bachelors degree. My advice to young men is use college to your benefit as a leg up in life. Strive for a degree that offers you a clear pathway to success as transparent and as quick as possible. Don’t waste your young years as an able-bodied young man sitting in a classroom for the sake of the experience, doing it for your parents, or succumbing to peer-pressure. Personally, I view college as a means to get a leg up in society for somewhat established adults who have the capital to do so. Otherwise, find yourself, travel, become the best version of yourself, and explore options outside of the standard 4-year degree. Y’all stay safe and blessed 🙏🏽

I took a 7 year gap and went back to study neuroscience. I wasn't interested in school straight out of high school and now I'm way more interested than all of my younger classmates. When I went back, I took it very seriously, got into an honor society, and received a full ride. It is absolutely because I went to school when I wanted to and not when people pressured me to. In those seven years, I worked at coffee shops and traveled the country in a punk band ^_^. It's YOUR life, folks! You know what's best for you.

You can also self teach anything you have left to learn at that point and get certified in any programs you need if you want to continue forward with that field too. College teaches you jack shit of what you actually need to know for a lot of STEM fields. Vocational schools and being self taught are 100% the ways to go now.
I would say it depends on your major and your interest, if you are a year out from getting a Engineering degree then go for it, its easy to get a decent paying job with one and you can always fall back on it. You can even be self employed after getting a few years experience and work at your own pace. On the other hand if its something you know you are going to hate and not much pay, then way dump more money and time into it.

I'd bet you good money *noone* would hire a self-tought engineer for any serious projects.
The only thing that you can learn by studying on your own and find a job if you have a talent for it is programming, not because it is easier, but because there are thousands of tutorials and there are thousands of small niches that you can study and learn and, at the end of the day, you *can* have your own project, code it and go in an interview and say "here I can do this job. I MADE THIS" ... try making anything on biology/chemistry/physics without a lab or discover a new theorem in math or build something with your engineering "skillz" and see what you can make.
I'm a college professor and I tell my students that if everyone in America got a college degree, then the people working at Burger King would have college degrees. You getting a degree does not change the structure of the economy. Some jobs are plentiful and others are scarce. Employers pay for jobs that need to get done, not your fantasy of a perfect life. Before you pick a major check out the placement rate. Are there jobs in the field you like? Who is hiring? What skills do they need? Then decide. Trades can pay very well. No shame in that.

I tell people it doesn't matter whether they have a degree or not and most places, even offices, will still likely treat you as expendable. It's not easy for everyone to figure out who they are and what they want in life but I think happiness is more important than some temporary feeling of prestige you get from graduating uni.
I used to be a trucker, and now i'm in college studying medecine. Honestly , the time in school has cost me so much that it is gonna be a while before i get back what i would have made during all these years. Trucker life just was not for me, but it's always surprising to see people in the medical field judging down truckers, when most of then could not even do it has a job. I was fortunate enough do be able to to something I am passionate about but, people should realise that they dumb down essential jobs even tho they are basically the base of the society without them, we could not have medical supply, or that expensive car, or that food etc etc. Respect every single humans giving their heart out there. People are awesome and you are definitly not define by your degree

I remember one afternoon, I happily went to my Mom telling her I'm interested in becoming a music therapist (I've since changed my mind about that). And before I could even elaborate on my interest, my mom began screaming and yelling at me for changing my mind and belittling the occupation. She ended her rant stating how she doesn't like people who don't know what they want/want to do. I was 16 at the time. Maybe that mum had a dream she could not fulfill for herself, maybe studying to become a lawyer, whatever, with the prestige and money that comes with it, because of ability or opportunity or discipline, etc. Then, when the child has a different dream, the mom loses it and yells and belittles, to manipulate the kid back into what the mum wants in the first place! It's possible, isn't it? Also, and this is maybe not a nice thing to say publicly, but it is the truth, sometimes there are patents, who DO NOT have the best intentions on their minds for their children! They are thinking of, if the child does this or gets into this, that would benefit them! Not everyone's life is a Disney movie...

my husband and i both didn’t go to college- me because i had to start working at 16 and was lucky enough to find a company where i could really grow, and him because he’s an immigrant who still has a hard time speaking and understanding english- and honestly we’re doing pretty good on money. and there are huge opportunities that we’re working towards that are not too far out of our reach- the social norm nowadays is that to be successful you HAVE to go to college but in reality there are many ways to financial stability without having to have a degree - and i’m just talking about living in the US, that definitely might not be true for other countries but this is just my experience

That’s similar to a teacher I had that broke down student loans to us freshman and sophomore year of high school . He went as far to help find grants for students and applying. Some listened to him some didn’t. Wish other people would do that for younger students.

Sad thing is that when I dropped out I noticed that I had more money and less debt than most people my age.
My goal was to be the first in my dad's family to graduate college, but realizing that I didn't know what major I want or wasn't sure if what major would help me in future
Plus failing each test that affected my grade....I gave up and felt so ashamed because I thought I was failure.
Now I'm college dropout with a job I greatful for, and now I'm happy
College is bullshit. It's obvious they ingrained in you that failure is a bad thing. I'm a real estate investor and in real estate, failure is a part of it and you learn from it.
Love the story bro. A little different than your's but I can def relate. I at least got my associate's degree. There was times when I thought about just leaving myself. Fun enough that some of my friends from HS followed me there & majority of them dropped out. The only thing that kept me going was the pressure from my Uncle & sister because they were my "role models" as they've finished & were successful.
Even my counselor from college kept pressuring me to find a Uni to finish my remaining 2 years. I realized that since I'm here & it's free that I'll just finish up here & keep those 2 years for later. To this day, I'm glad I never rushed into those remaining 2 years cause most of my friends/family aren't in their degree with debt. I believe that men were built for more blue collar jobs anyway & thus I've taken a liking into mechanic work and interestingly plumbing as well. I've even thought about going back to college as an alumni to take their plumbing courses. Guess that's a perk for doing my 2 years, but you def proved many wrong by finding your own path w/o any college support, Kudos!

Recently most Airlines removed the bachelor's degree requirement to fly under them, as the market is really competitive [In a good way] right now as many people aren't choosing piloting so it's much more relaxed getting into that line of work for a serious career, I always wanted to fly but that requirement scared me away initially but now that its changed I have no excuse and have started flight training today.
I often feel that paying that much for college is just a trap to keep the lower class of people here working in America tbh. Like who really has 100k-150k to drop on a degree right out of high school? Definitely not many. You get pressured to get a degree, go into debt, and then hope to find a job in your field in order to pay back the school. That’s if you’re lucky. Worst case you end up in a dead end job way outside your field and now you owe soo much for a degree you aren’t even using. Not to mention the stress that comes along with having that kind of burden.
It's only $150k in the US - it's much cheaper in the rest of the developed world. The student loans are much fairer too.
That is why I don't believe in taking loans. Every field has a way up, you can work a few years, or do part time schooling . The younger people in my family we encourage them to work first, or go to college ( I think it's called community college in the states ) taking less expensive courses. When they want more they can do so while paying them. The older folks teach them coding, amination, how to make apps, as another skill set to work. So there are many paths and and options without taking your soul into debt so you can be stuck in a rat race for the rest of your life
Trade school are a way better option .i did welding assembling for 1 and a half year and it cost me around 20k for everything. I didnt have to pay rent do. Looking to maybe follow a other class maybe electromechanic
Yes many just live sad life that way, when they have no extra money to use for themselves for their own happiness, when they are then going to be just miserable workers working all day in job they dont like, while having never extra money to use for themselves, so then they really go miserable and stop caring about other people.

If you're not interested in college/ university, join a trade ladies and gentlemen. Join preferably right after you graduate high school. Go to a technical or trade school and commit yourself to continuous learning, including obtaining multiple certifications (NATE, etc.) Do this, and after a few years (depending on your drive) you will acheive six-figure status and obtain a skill set that is needed around the world. Even if your dream may not be relative to a trade, dreams need to come with economic plans.
Facts, also move somewhere cheap instead of slaving away just to live. You can literally monetize almost any skill you have or learn any skill. I know English lol, and I'm working on my TEFL certification to teach English online. There are other options too, and I plan to explore different skills & work different jobs

A lot of people sleep on trade schools/ training. A lot of the men I know did it or went into the military and decided to get degrees along the way.
People also sleep on gap years. I got to travel, explore other interests, & am even working on a Masters to expand my skill sets.
Yup like I said under another comment, big difference between being part of a UNION trade compared to non-union. Where I am depending on your trade, the unions pay $40-$60+ an hour as a journeyman. Packages include vaca fund, annuity fund, pension, insurance, scholarship and more. In my union there are guys getting $12,000+ for vaca alone each year. I notice some women are quick to turn their nose at me because of my construction attire not knowing that I'm debt free and making more than their desk job. Lol fellas like Preach said best start asking these women how much debt they have!
My brother and I both went to college. We both dropped out, he became a mechanic and I became an over the road truck driver. Now we are both debt free and making more money then we would have if we finished getting our degrees.
started an apprenticeship in hvac right outta high school. definitely wouldnt say I (or anyone) have a passion for heating and cooling systems but i love working wiht my hands and it makes good money. best decision i ever made
I work for a company that teaches craftsmen going into the labor force. The majority are younger men and I'm proud to be part of it. Modern pop culture has no regard for the working man that has built and maintained Western infrastructure. I want to go to college and I think it's a good path for some, but I strongly believe that it is manual labor where the real value can be found. I also think the cost of college is completely ridiculous! The reason I am in my late 20s and haven't gotten a degree is because, like Aba, I don't like debt and I don't like having 0 in the bank.
I'm blessed that my parents saved up to help me go to university, but now that I'm almost finished my degree, unsure what I want to do still and hearing stuff like this, I sometimes wonder what would've happened if I didn't go straight to university and instead got some work/life experience first. You're bang on when you say college/university for the longest time was just "the thing to do" out of high school (that was certainly my parents' expectation). Thankfully, that social mindset is finally shifting, and I'm very curious how it will change society a few decades from now.

You know, I never thought of it that way, but looking back on life, I was the laziest student. All I did was sleep in class or ditch class altogether, zero motivation. I didn't go to college, I went straight to work full time. I was the total opposite at work. Instead of being lazy, I always worked harder than everyone. I think it was mainly due to pride and wanting to have a good reputation. After building a resume and good work history for years, I eventually was hired as a Police Officer. Even with no degree, I was one of two dudes hired from a pool of 1000 applicants and most of them had degrees. I was hired because of my work history, my interview performance, I had the highest test score, and I was in ridiculous shape because I was a serious weight lifter. I eventually made the SWAT team, then later became a sniper on the team.
Now I'm 39 years old and 'm not a SWAT Officer anymore. I started my own company a couple years ago that did 2.5 million the first year and should break 10 million next year.
Now that I look back on it, this comment you made is very true for me. I was so lazy and unmotivated in school, but by any metric, I've been successful in life. School just wasn't for me. Funny thing is, I've had people with college degrees and making 40k a year, talk down to me for not having a degree, meanwhile I was a SWAT sniper with many awards, including a life saving citation, and now a business owner paying myself over a million a year. Unreal. One thing I learned that may help you, the people around you with degrees aren't any smarter than you. Your intelligence and your aptitude is inherited, just like your athleticism. I learned that in the workforce when I realized the "educated" people around me were actually much less intelligent than I was. It was really eye opening

I totally relate to Aba when he talked about immigrant parents and breaking their kids. I took a break from college because I was cracking under all the pressure being put on me to succeed, especially as the first born son and second oldest of three kids. I felt like (especially with my dad) I couldn't really talk about how my mental state was doing in college with crap professors, an overwhelming workload, and other pressures that were weighing on me.
I did eventually decide on pursing a career in comp sci but I really wish someone would have sat me down and told me that I really don't just have to jump into college right out of high school and to just take some time to really figure out what you want to do. Would have save me a lot of time, stress, and money.
Oh I definitely agree. My family is Kenyan and the only professions that seem to exist are doctor, lawyer or engineer. I was thrown into University and into a biology major on the premed track because I ofcourse had to become a doctor. I mean I ended up changing to majoring in just respiratory therapy but it was difficult dealing with the pressure as I am the first born and the first in my family to be raised in the US (not even born here). Complaining about any stress about school is not allowed cause it’s like African people don’t believe in mental health. Man I often wondered if all this school just to end up in a stressful job is worth it. I’m happy that I chose to focus on RT instead of taking the path to med school that my folks were pushing me to
Same thing happened to me. My parents pushed the idea of becoming a doctor without me thinking about what that really entails. Now I’m doing nursing but I’m still tryna figure out how to graduate with no debt
@@williamchimezie7423 I ended up taking a leave of absence for a couple of years to work full time nonstop at a barely above minimum wage job to save and I got to return and pay all the tuition out my own pocket and ended up without any student loans. The struggle is real with the cost of higher education it’s ridiculous

All our African parents knew was "doctor, lawyer, engineer" To be honest, the degrees you got was more about them being able to brag to their friends than your happiness and well-being. after graduating high school at 16, deciding to wait and figure out what i wanted to do was low-key the best decision i’ve made. Disappointed my grandmother which was tough. But that was the best decision in the long run. Colleges/Universities aren’t going anywhere. It’s better to actually *_want_* to go to school instead of feeling pressured.

I had a family friend have a mental breakdown from the stress and pressures from college. She was getting delusional. When it got so bad, her parents finally did something about it and put her in a hospital. Unfortunately, she passed away. She was only 20. She kept saying that she dealing with a lot from school, but her parents refused to listen to her.

People did alot of drugs in the 80s and 90s so what we're seeing with the current rise in dropouts, overdoses, and vehicular fatalities amongst their children is the result of all that reckless behavior. Again it has scams scattered throughout, like the newest field of math was made in the 1700s why the fuck am I dropping a half grand on a calculus textbook? Straight out of highschool 6-7+ years ago, my future was determined by my parents from the get-go...and because of my timidness, I had no say. As part of the Filipino Culture, everything that has been mentioned in this video holds up....I am still discovering what I want to do despite wasting 3-5 years trying to be a nurse. The failure was much but I got wisdom from it to finally pursue something for 'myself.' It seems at this level being 27 going to 28, everyone in my circles has finished except me - but you know what? I will go the distance.
Better to realize now, rather than work a job you hate & then get fed up in your 40's/50's & do a whole carer change then. I hope you find something you truly enjoy & that is a good fit for you, you seem determined so I'm sure you will get there.
When I was 18 I enlisted and didn’t tell my parents until it was time to drive in. Partially to avoid this. Seeking something more college being pushed as the path in the home. And me having no idea what the future entailed and just seeking more guidance than I had already been given. It’s not a path I’d recommend for most people it’s really for a certain type of person. But I feel that. Debt that looks like and probably is connected to what for me would have been a guess based on monetary opportunity.
I’m 30, dropped out of college to start an electrical apprenticeship at 20. Now a general foreman making $100 an hour. Been making 150k-200k since I was 25. Join the skilled trades gentlemen, especially my black and brown brothers.
