I remember pulling into the parking lot at St. Pius X Church in Towson and the man on the radio said "baseball has lost a diamond."
I was recovering from liver transplant surgery at Baylor in Dallas. Mickey’s hospital room was next to mine. I never saw him, but my husband had a few conversations with his wife.

I love that he never divorced his wife, even after a long separation. He didn't want to humiliate her. That says something about his character. His longtime galpal tried to crash his funeral, but was not admitted.

When Mickey Mantle died that terrible day AMERICA lost a Baseball Hero like they hadn’t lost before. What a legend he was. His dad saw Mickey when he was young that Mickey could be a baseball hero, or just a Great Baseball player in his life. His dad was tired when he came home from work, but he wanted his so to practice ball,& to teach him to hit balls right or left handed. Mickey loved playing baseball,& Mickey loved his fans as he signed baseballs,& other memorabilia to let his fans have a part of history of him. Mickey didn’t know when he drank alcohol that it was slowly killing him. He just did it as something to do with his teammates to have something to do. That’s what Alcohol slowly does as it destroys the body of people famous or not. If, Mickey could do it over he sure would in a heartbeat. Mickey would have took care of his body better, but Mickey thought he would never live that old. Sadly injures,& alcohol would destroy his playing body by the time Mickey was 37 years old. We remember Mickey as a great baseball hero not as someone who let alcohol destroy his body. What a Legend Mickey was. What a hero he is. May Mickey Mantle Rest In Piece Forever More. God Bless Him,& His Family!!

This was a sad day for America.
That dream about God not allowing Mickey in Heaven but having him autograph the dozens of baseballs gets me every time, he was so funny and a tremendous storyteller, despite his tragedies he kept that 1-derful sense of humor, a real hero.
Whitey Martin and Hank didn't help this young kid with their partied and drinking. Man, had Mickey taken care of himself he may have had many more records. Saw him play at old Griffith STadium and RFK Stadium.
Mickey was magnificent.
God, I miss this ESPN. Just good, articulate, professional analysis and reporting. Now it's just clowns like Dan orlovsky and Stephen A just yelling and making ridiculous claims to get clicks
Once they shifted from analysis and reporting to yelling and pontificating, I stopped watching ESPN. :(
Truth. It was a time at ESPN when you had true sports reporting mixed with entertaining personalities on SportsCenter. It was the total package.

Unbelievable guy , I saw him play in the 50s. I was a teenager immigrant from Europe not knowing how famous he would become.

Saw him once, in 1967, he was pinch hitting, lefty, and got a ground rule double to right field, against the White Sox. They then, put in a pinch runner for him. I was just a mere kid, with my Dad, but will never forget it. Number #7!!
TALK ABOUT MISSED OPPORTUNITIES !!!! MICKEY MANTLE and I sat in a hotel room in Boston in the early 80s for more than 2 hours awaiting a seminar . Wind, rain, storming weather , nothing to do but talk .Mickey had a large part on the upcoming program. I had a small part.If I had asked Mickey for the shirt he was wearing, he would have removed it, given it to me, and taken another shirt from the closet, put it on and continued with our waiting. We had some mutual friends in Birmingham and renewed many previous pleasant times. I had met 2 presidents and a few other notable persons. I never have asked any person for an autograph. ---- I WISH I HAD !!!!!!

I agree on the comment that ESPN has become sort of a clown show, and not insightful and informative as it used to be, remember when ESPN would show 3 games on the 4th of July back in the '90's or so. A nice treat for Baseball fans
