What I really like about this fight is that it is "realistic". At this point of the story, Naruto had zero chance of defeating Neji in a fair fight. He (Naruto) took advantage of Neji's arrogance to give him the final blow. Had Neji kept his guard up, he would have seen the attack coming and he would have dodged Naruto's punch. But he was too full of himself and that's why he lost.
Nope, he lost because a tailed beast even more gifted than him in power upped his opponent's strengh to an unsuspectable measure. Also because this same tailed beast had so much strengh he ko him in 1 punch
As a child I thought that Neji didn't get up because his pride had been hurt by the blow Naruto received (clearly Neji wasn't used to receiving direct hits), and when he didn't get up, the Referee disqualified him.

This fight always bugged me, not for the physical fight but for the battle of philosophies that underlie it. The whole philosophical battle is Neji's determinism and Naruto's anti-determinism. Neji believes that ones destiny controls their fate while Naruto feels that one can change their fate through hard work. However in the end this fight is a win for Neji's philosophy solely because Naruto had to use the nine tailed fox's chakra to win instead of his own ability. Naruto won solely because it became his destiny to house the nine tailed fox and because the 4th hokage sealed the nine tails in Naruto precisely because he felt its power would be needed in the future and because he remembered Jiraiya's belief in a child of prophecy.

That aside there is a difference between using your natural abilities and using an augmented ability like an implanted tailed beast. Further this whole fight was lined up as a philosophical battle between Neji's determinism or the belief that your destiny is decided from the day that you are born and nothing you do can ever change that, and Naruto's anti-determinism, or belief that your destiny is ever changing based on your actions. And it also made Neji realise that there was somethings he couldn't see, like the Nine tailed chakra. So it is arguable that Naruto worked hard to tame the nine tailed fox for some of its chakra, but the nine tailed fox was actually given to him as part of a destiny. It would be no different than a hero of legend being given a legendary sword that specifically works on all of their enemies.

Also he was a failure, a loner, and had to face a lot worse than neji, But still he managed to beat him. If you remember, the clone justu was his weakness and he managed to beat him with the same. He even says that in the end of the fight. To conclude it can be said yes naruto was the child of the prophecy but he had to go through a lot to attain all his powers. Its not like he woke up with them on fine morning.
