SPEAKING candidly about her ‘double’ life, Sirat Taneja discussed what it means to live as a transgender in India (Delhi).
Recongised as a boy - Aman, she has always seen herself as a woman and feminine.
Her transition is something that has now been made into a film by the celebrated director, Deepa Mehta - who is no stranger to tackling boundaries, prejudices or discrimination.
Her most famous trilogy of films - Fire (1986), Earth (1999) and Water (2005) announced her to the world and she has been an international auteur of distinction ever since.
This new film ‘I am Sirat’ which had its European premiere at the London Film Festival (October 4-15) explores the trial and tribulations of transgenders in India through the personal story of Sirat.
In this interview, Sirat Taneja, as she likes to be known now, describes how she came to meet ‘Deepa Ma’ (Deepa Mehta - who was ill and didn’t appear at the LFF tea) - is what she calls her - with both fondness and huge respect - and how the two agreed to ‘collaborate’.
There is an important part of this feature with footage from Sirat’s Instagram account much in evidence and providing a very personal and intimate commentary - while Mehta’s interviews and questions are in line with a more traditional documentary style.
