Going through the space between times in those stones is a terrible and frightening thing. Nobody would do it unless they had to. In the book it describes it more when she nearly touches the stone as "Chaos reached out to grab me." Jamie saw the look of terror on her face and grabbed her back. That's what proved it to him that it was true, he saw her being sucked into that other dimension. He believed her before because he wanted to believe her. Now he believes it because he saw it. When he was walking away she called to him to ask "For all those who ever loved you, don't go to Culloden Field. Don't die there." They took that out of the show but it was important to me that she wanted to be able to think, once she was in the future, that he lived his life to a good old age, not that he died fruitlessly on that terrible battlefield. Smallpox. Millions of people a year used to die of smallpox until they invented a vaccine for it. I was the last generation of Americans to get the vaccine and the disease was declared eradicated world wide in the 1970's. Quite the best feat of modern technology ever!
Here is the part of the book where Jamie tells Claire how hard it was to let her go ... “I prayed all the way up that hill yesterday,” he said softly. “Not for you to stay; I didna think that would be right. I prayed I’d be strong enough to send ye away.” He shook his head, still gazing up the hill, a faraway look in his eyes. “I said ‘Lord, if I’ve never had courage in my life before, let me have it now. Let me be brave enough not to fall on my knees and beg her to stay.’ ”
They have an unusually intense on-screen chemistry. I've never seen anything like them on any other show or movie that I can remember. Its not just the romance. There is something indescribable even in their interviews together. They're obviously dear friends and trust each other completely.
This is a great episode, one of my favorites. I agree that priest gave a smirk, he knew what he was doing and how the crowd would react. Jamie wanted to "watch Claire" during that last night together because he knew he was going to give her up and he wanted to remember HER in passion. Jamie can't travel (neither can Frank). It is not as much a matter of accent as the choice of words "f*cking barbecue" - even thought the word barbecue apparently already existed in that time, "f*cking" didn't - they even pointed it out past episode when Jamie asked what it meant. But the clue that cemented my suspicion that Geilis was a traveler was the look she gave Claire when Claire said "I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country" as history would not know this Nathan Hale's quote for another 20 years. Don't worry, we all love Jamie :D he trully is a king of men...and we have colective hate for Laogharie. I think that after this confesion Jamie realizes that Claire finally makes sense - the way the talks, behaves, the things she thinks and doesn't understand - all of it suddenly falls into place...

I love that he gave her the choice and then was heartbroken and crying by the fire when he felt she wouldnt come back. Thank god she did. I guess she was very conflicted about it, at this point she doesn't know how the stones work and whether she would actually go back to her time or not. But, you know, those feelings for the ginger could not be denied haha

I too teared up at that scene when Claire returned from the stones, and there is so much mixed emotional roller coaster buildup to that scene that emotion has to come bursting out. Also I think that Jamie must have thought it made some sense that Claire was from the future since she was so different and had so much unusual knowledge. That prior experience with her is why he asked if she was a witch at first, not because she was merely accused of being one. There was also the story in song of a woman who travels through the stones at the concert. So credit to Jamie's intelligence and observation as well as his trust in Claire.
She asked Jamie one time when he told her she'd make a poor spy, where he thought she came from. He said he didn't have a clue. She wasn't from the wee folk because she was too big, but she wasn't French because he could hear that wasn't her native tongue. He went through crossing off a few other possibilities and finally said she could have just dropped out of the sky for all he knew, but it really didn't matter to him.
One of favorite scenes too. "Are ye... a witch?" Makes me roll on the floor. He's always deflected her accusations, about believing in changelings and fairies and other superstitions. He says "I'm an educated man, Sassenach." instead of yes or no.
I agree with everything you said! Claire and Jamie are also my favorite onscreen couple. They are such a good display of what a marriage and partnership looks like and it's beautiful. Randall and Beth from "This Is Us" is my second fave.
Geillis, the character, is from Scotland. Lotte, the actress is from the Netherlands. I think this episode 'seals the deal'- you're all in after this point- you're a fan.
A great reaction befitting a great episode. I rewatch this episode and even though I didn't get anguished or scared for Claire because they knew that in the end it would all work out. I still get emotional and suffer for Claire's suffering. Our scene where Claire tells Jamie about I came from the future and all of her story. It's a super important moment in history and for them as a couple, the first person that Claire shared her story with was Jamie. Claire in that moment was as vulnerable, stripped of any secrets for Jamie as never before. He was just perfect at being beside her listening to everything. What a fucked up man because putting himself in his place wouldn't believe it, would call Claire crazy at the very least. But Jamie doesn't really listen and believe, and I continue to trust Claire even more than before. It was genuine their reaction to say they were in love with Jamie, and something that everyone who watched Outlander shared, the love for these two characters who are passionate. Claire and Jamie's fire never dies down and the sex scenes evolve along with the couple and who they're hanging out with at the moment. It's impossible to watch the series and not be shocked and obsessed by the surreal chemistry that Sam and Caitriona have in the scene. Their relationship also becomes a relationship goal to have. partnership, absolute trust in each other, honesty and openness to talk about everything and have someone to listen and take care of you. You follow the evolution of this relationship is invisible. for me it was impossible to stop consuming more about them. Jamie has a very good and evolved heart because they wouldn't let go of the person I love. And he is visibly in love with Claire more than loving her, and if she is protected and what she wants is to get back to her life even though she desperately wants to have her with him. The first one to watch it, I had my heart in my hand believing that she would have returned to the future and left my favorite Scotsman alone suffering. Even better Claire chose to stay because of Jamie despite all the reasons to come back she chose Jamie. About Geillis, you can suspect that she came to the future, but even to have confirmation of how it went, and her having thrown herself at the fire for Claire was a lot of head blast. Next chapter we will visit Jamie's family home and her sister get ready she is wonderful. 😘

There are comments saying the word "fucking" didn't exist then, but the word "fuck" certainly existed from at least the 14th century, and I can't imagine it would have been long as all before people started adding the ing to it.
I actually think it's more emotional when you rewatch the Jamie and Claire part of this episode knowing that Jamie is taking Claire to the stones. Especially the sex scene cause you realise he believes this is his last time with her.
My mistake last one was burnt in 1727 Jenny Horne and Geillis Was on of the first and from East Lothian and was burnt in the 1590's or there aboot's lol love the reactions ha ha ha!!!
Jaime also believes her because he realized that she comes from a place that is "easier" and he knows that place doesn't really exist. And he noticed that she doesn't REALLY understand how she is suppose to act in the 18th century. He's an educated man and she uses all sorts of words and phrases he has never heard of. So it just makes sense that she comes from another time instead of another place.

I'm glad Claire didn't end up leaving but imagine what Frank would think if he knew she had a chance to go back and DECIDED to stay... geillis is definitely one of the more interesting and mysterious characters of this series. When I saw (and read) this part, I definitely was under the impression that she was indeed burned. But Idk for certain.
When the man said stop she’s with child I thought maybe they wouldn’t burn her and show up later ahahha i’ve watched up to 2x03 and she hasn’t showed up yet! To be fair, they’re in France so it would be very surprising to see her there lol

You're not the only person that's obsessed and addicted to this show. Sam & Cait are great together as J & C. There chemistry together is off the charts! They don't even have to be having sexy time. It just gets me in the heart when all they have to do is look at each other. Great example season 4 episode 5 called "Savages". I just love this show! You'd better start keeping a box of tissues close by, like the rest of us, you're gonna need them. I felt such relief when Claire finally told Jamie the truth about herself in this episode. How are you able to only watch 1 episode a wk???? I also have the scar on my arm(1960s), but it's faded quite a bit now. Looking forward to you're next reaction & future episodes. And l'm feeling sorry for you when you reach "droughtlander" time like the rest of us.😭😭

I had the same thought about Jamie. If you love someone set them free. Now he knows she is there of her own free will and she wanted to be with him. Also do you have one of those vaccine marks on your arm? I do and I was born in 1963. She said it was a smallpox vaccine.
They quit giving that vaccine in America shortly after you got yours. I got one (or I got one several times) but apparently I am naturally immune because even with three or four applications I never developed the lesion that leaves the scar. You used to see some people with really big sloppy scars but that's because they scratched at the lesion.

Yeah she loved Frank but her and Jamie are in love , head over heels once in a lifetime rare passionate love it's definitely obvious. But I also feel she should trust him like when he told her to stay put and then again when he told her not to go to Gaylises house it was for her own protection, if she would have listened then he would not of had to risk his life twice to save her. And she should trust him by listing and not putting her life in danger because she knows he will try to save her. So why not just trust him and listen instead of putting your life and his in danger.
Gellis Duncan for real was one of the last ladies burnt at the stake for witchcraft,think she was from the borders though not sure,need to brush up on that part of our history,well done Gelis
Just a heads up- the last 2 episodes of season one are very heavy and kind of disturbing. Some people watch only certain parts of it. I needed to skip some of the scenes.

Before Jamie left with Doogal he told Claire to stay away from Gaylises because Colin's wrath will be turning her way , he knew she poisoned her husband. And she should trust him by listing and not putting her life in danger because she knows he will try to save her. So why not just trust him and listen instead of putting your life and his in danger.
If you think watching Outlander is like a movie, try watching Poldark, they fit so much more into an episode, that it feels like a movie.

Just a heads up- the last 2 episodes of season one are very heavy and kind of disturbing. Some people watch only certain parts of it. I needed to skip some of the scenes.
Violent and ugly is an understatement. Every tender-hearted watcher needs a blanket to hide under and a puppy to squeeze or they won't survive the last two episodes.

Before Jamie left with Doogal he told Claire to stay away from Gaylises because Colin's wrath will be turning her way , he knew she poisoned her husband. Claire said okay then 30 seconds later went to her house. She didn't even think I just gave Jaime my word for the second time , last time I got captured and all the men put their life in jeopardy to save me. No , nothing she just went straight there 30 seconds later. But I guess it had to happen to bring Jamie back so she could tell him everything about the future.
