I am a Chinese by ethnicity, though I don't live in Mainland China. 🤝 I embrace the culture of Japan, and I study Japanese (JLPT N4 + Native Primary 3). Most members of my family love traveling to Japan and we even have Japanese friends too. Personally, I do not hold hatred towards modern day Japan; I do not hold hatred towards the Empire of Japan (大日本帝国) either. What I despise is a massacre denier/justifier, not because of what the Empire of Japan had done, but because of what he himself has done (as a person, nothing to do with his nationality or ethnicity). Btw, just to share with you and everyone: Militarism (軍国主義) is an extreme reactionary ideology that persist today among the very few extremists left worldwide, not only in Japan, but also in many countries, including Germany (e.g. Die Heimat).
I have been living in Kuala Lumpur for more than 10 years. From my experience, some (but not all) other people or media do have the tendency to STEREOTYPE Kuala Lumpur as "Pro-Japan" ("親日") and Nanjing as "Anti-Japan" ("反日"). However, according to JLPT (日本語能力試験), The ratio of the number of examinees in Nanjing divided by the total population of Nanjing, is actually higher than that in Kuala Lumpur. Moreover, unlike Kuala Lumpur, most examinees in Nanjing study Japanese all the way to N2 or N1 (I am only N4). A non-native learner really has to embrace the culture or Japan, watch tons of Japanese videos or anime, and even communicate with the Japanese people, to reach N2 or N1. Also, there are actually many Japanese restaurants in Nanjing, just like Kuala Lumpur. And there are even Japanese people who permanently stay in Nanjing, albeit being few - around few hundred in 9,000,000. ----- even with this "dreaded" war museum in place.
@@お節介じい Well, in my very humble opinion, there are several reasons besides the two politicians that you mentioned. 1. In my country, we never equate any nation today with any reactionary ideology from the past (e.g. militarism - 軍国主義). To us, an extremist (whether from my own country, or China, or Japan, or any other countries) only represents himself as a person - not the ethnicity or nationality which he happens to belong to. 2. Unlike Mainland China, we only begin to study general history on a very basic level (even less content regarding WW2 compared to Japan) at secondary school. We only study war history at the same degree of detail as portrayed in this war museum at bachelor's degree or higher. Therefore, even if some of Malaysians (e.g. me) happen to know the history of Nanjing Massacre, we are already matured enough to study the history without any feeling of hatred arise. 3. Unlike Mainland China, our country allows multiple political standpoints to exist among the imported books. For example, I have Daijirin (大辞林) and a primary school Japanese dictionary which I find them "Neutral", Daigenkai (大言海) which is a Pre-war dictionary that is "Right", and a Chinese dictionary from China that is "Left". 4. In my country, all our family and schoolteachers taught us that history is to be learned, not to be hated or loved. Hence, we learn the atrocities of WW2 Japan as a fact, not as a "dummy" to be hated.
@@お節介じい "大马人民的对日情绪" Some members of my family have also travelled to China before, so this is what I can share with you as far as I know: Firstly, even in Malaysia, there DO exist extreme people who dislike part or even all of Japan, just like in China. For example, out of my family tree as I know, there are two and only two persons who dislike part of Japan - My paternal grandmother (passed away) and my father. They both hate WW2 Japan to bones, and they often talk about that in front of us. Although they do not have any ill-will towards modern day Japan, they still refuse to eat any Japanese cuisine, and they seem to keep a distance from the culture of Japan. In China on the other hand, the places where the "anti-Japan" sentiment are the most likely to arise, are not in the major cities like Nanjing (or Shanghai, Xiamen etc.), but in places where foreign tourists rarely visits. For example, if you visit a town/city in China that is not well known to any foreigners and do not have any cultural exchange with the foreigners, you will encounter problems, sometimes very severe ones. To safeguard ourselves (yes, both you and me!) we may download the list of JLPT candidates from the JLPT websites. Whichever regions of China not shown in the list we will have to "exercise an extra layer of caution" if we travel there!
