Next time you can drill the holes but weave a leader or some small gauge wire to connect the line directly to the hook. Then that will take any pressure off the plastic.

I have that orange fish from Disney that I turned into a lure a few years back. I have to use a steel leader on it because we have muskies and northerns here in Wisconsin. I have yet to use it though. It's of course water activated. I saw it on the Monster Mike channel a few years back. You guys are the first I've seen make lures out of a bunch of different toys though.
