Do you have milk weed growing in your yard? If not, do you think you may get it now after watching this video? I can't wait for my butterfly weed and milk weed seeds germinate!
I have been growing native milkweeds in my AZ low desert garden since 2016! I have raised a number of monarch butterflies from egg to full butterfly. Have many pictures of the process. I have seeds started of at least 4 different varieties of milkweed in my home at the moment. The one you showed us I have growing. I am planning on selling them along with other native plants and some herbs through my new plant business called Annie Joe's Plants! I want to take the time here to thank you for helping me get my business rolling! Your teachings and comments have helped me tremendously and I am so thankful for you! Your friendship along with Liz from Garden Happy has been wonderful. If I see you posting in another influencer's video I always take the time to say Hi! Lol
Hi June! That's great that you've been growing native milkweed for that long. It's so much fun to see the whole process, isn't it? 🐛🦋 I love the name of your new plant business! 💗 Thank you for your very kind words. They mean so much to me. 🙏🏼 I love seeing your name pop up in the comment section on other UA-cam channels! 😊
I already have butterfly weed in one section of one of my flower beds in the front of the house, but I'm looking forward to adding more this spring in the beds out back. I just winter sowed 6 seeds of butterfly weed. I'm excited to see how my first season of winter sowing turns out.
Hi Birgit. That's wonderful that you already have a nice patch of butterfly weed established in your yard. I'm sure the pollinators love that area! I'm excited that you're winter sowing this year, and also that you're trying butterfly weed from seed! It'll be fun to see our seeds germinating in their containers later this year. 😊🌸❄️
Thanks for the tip about common milkweed. Someone gave me some seeds and I have already WS them. As per your suggestion, I have a spot away from my garden where I will plant them.
Hi Maureen! I learned the hard way. I had dug a few plants of the common milkweed from my mother-in-law's home and planted them in my side walkway flower bed. Well the plant continues to spread and I feel bad pulling it out, but it really shouldn't be in there. I didn't realize that common milkweeds spreads so much like that. I do want the plant in my yard, but I need to place it more strategically where it can just do it's wonderful thing. 😊🦋
Yes, I have alot of milkweed and butterfly weed in my yard. I grew most of it from seed and got some plants from from a local monarch farm. I love keeping an eye out for the eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalis. You never know where you are going to find a chrysalis.
Hi Peggy. That's so cool that you have that much milkweed as well as butterfly weed in your yard. The Monarch butterflies must love stopping through your yard! 🥰🦋
I didn't really know about butterfly milkweed, but I really like it. I've sown it in a jug now, even though it's not listed online anywhere as being frost hardy for my zone 6b in Germany. But I trust your experience with it in US Zone 5.
Hi there. I did a little research on growing butterfly weed in Germany. What I found is that you want to make sure that after the seeds germinate and get at least their first set of true leaves, you plant it in well-drained, sandy soil since it will not do well in heavy, clay soil. Good luck, friend! 🤞🏼😊🦋 Also, if you want to grow common milkweed, just make sure it's not considered invasive in your area.
Hi Nancy! I've never grown red clover, but it appears to be a perennial in zones 3-9. So based on that, I suggest winter sowing the seeds anytime from now until the end of February. The seeds need light to germinate so just press them into your potting mix. Good luck, friend! 😊🤞🏼💞
Hi Evelyn! I've never winter sown vegetable seeds. This will be my first year and I can't wait! I've only winter sown perennial seeds up until now. Regarding cauliflower, that plus other cool weather vegetable plants are great to winter sow now! I plan to winter sow mine near the end of February I think as I'm still winter sowing my perennial seeds. 😊🌸
Hi, Vita, I recently ordered some seeds from Etsy. One was Butterfly Weed, and the other was Purple Milkweed. I already put them in milk jugs outside. (First time Winter sowing) I never had them in my yard. It does not say anything about 2. year blooming. From Etsy, it is not a regular seed package. Good to know! I did get 2 other seeds, one is Blue Tweedia (T. caerulea) and the other is Dward Mexican Sunflower and on both packages it says "Do not cold stratify" underlined. I had planned to do that, what would you recommend? TIA! :)
Hi Ingrid! What USDA growing zone are you in? I believe both of these may be annuals where you live, but I wanted to check. It looks like Blue Tweedia is a perennial in zones 10-11 (and an annual everywhere else). Mexican Sunflower is also an annual in pretty much every zone. Since these both are heat loving plants, I would not winter sow them. Do you have grow lights set up inside? If so, you can start both of these seeds about 6-8 weeks before your average last frost date. If you do choose to winter sow them, I'd wait until at least March or so, and then keep a close eye on them as you'll have to protect them if there's going to be freezing temperatures. 😊💐
You hit a nerve with this thumbnail, my sister wanted a certain butterfly fly bush for Mother’s Day. I tried every nursery in four counties. You could only order online from Homedepo, it finally came noway would I ever brought this thing home. Bent double in box dry as a bone looked dead.Everything I read said be very careful of over watering and over fertilizing. Well this thing was dryer than dry and leafs were mostly brown or yellow. I planted it watered the heck out of it and when the hole was dug I mixed about a cup of blood meal and Bone meal in the hole. Kept it up all summer and it did turn around. But my sister was visiting my niece in Grenada and when she got home a week later wanted It planted somewhere else. At that point it was NO,it had just started to straighten up from being bent and I was not moving it. So we will see how it does this spring. I shutter any time butterfly and plants are in the same sentence!

Hi there! Thanks so much! I live in New Hampshire, I garden in a zone 5b and my average last frost date is around May 15. 😊🌸
@ that’s awesome, so am I !! NW Illinois. Let’s make 2025 the best year ever ☺️
For the pollinators..... I have some red clover seeds. When should I start these in milk jugs? Thanks!!!

@@budgetgardeningvita thank you, my friend!!!
Will butterfly weed do well along the backyard edge with trees?
Hi Evette. As long as the area gets full sun, it should do fine there. 😊
What do you think about winter sowing cauliflower?

@budgetgardeningvita I am in Zone 8a. No, I don't have grow lights also no room.

Oh my goodness, John! What a story! I sure do hope that your butterfly bush makes it just fine through the winter. 😊🦋🌸
@ I hope so too, I have a lot of time and money in that weed (still not happy/impressed with it)time will tell, I guess.
