  • Part 5 of 5: Hunting big woods mountain bucks can be some of the most difficult hunting there is for whitetails. In this 5 part series, Beau Martonik breaks down how to scout and hunt these public land whitetails in the Appalachian Mountains that most of us call home in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, New York and more.
In this episode, Beau walks through exactly how he is using onX Hunt to find potential buck bedding locations, understanding thermals, trail camera setup, boots on the ground scouting and how to setup close to the buck beds depending on the scenario.

I’ve been hunting the Allegheny National Forest for 3-4 years now with some decent luck. This will be my first year really going off grid to more mountainous terrain. This series has been a god send!

That map you were showing looks just like a spot I tried to hunt (this coming season will by second ever at 46 years old) this past season. I hunted the wrong side, but there were some hemlock thickets and a few rubs, and a trail right across a creek on the west side. This is southern Appalachian mnts, by the way. But after watching your video, I realize with similar winds, I have a shelf/bench that ought to make great buck bedding where the buck can play the thermals, find oaks up high, and also watch a small trail that comes in for human pressure. Damn man, I;ve been listening to your podcast, but this series and this episode just really brought a lot of things together.
    Thank you!

Just found your videos. My dad had me two things, go catch some brook trout to feed our family of 5, and second, send me out scouting for deer, before I could even carry a gun, so on his Saturday day off I would take him where the deer were hanging out. In those days we were meat hunters. I'm 68 now, and these areas are still producing. I sit now, and there's no better sound hearing a buck coming in to your grunt call. Man, your videos got me all pumped up now on this Sunday morning'

@@BeauMartonik you can lead a horse to water but you cant make them drink. The future of hunting is in good hands with you youngins that's for sure.

Awesome content man! Keep them coming for sure! Im in central MA in big woods here, so this all applies really well. Really like how you edited these videos; of you explaining things, then going to OnX, and then in the field with the combination of the 3. 👍🏻... oh and it was cool to see Greg the Bowhunting Fiend in one of the videos. No wonder why you guys are putting down awesome deer, iron sharpens iron!

What is your biggest deciding factors when deciding to hunt bottoms vs ridge tops? Is it pressure? Is it rut specific?

Newby here, so when you have north locked on your onx screen, are you literally using south / southeast directional to find the edge of points to look for buck beds?

In woods this big, how confident are you that the buck will be bedded in that particular spot? How many sits would it usually take to see him
