Been a fan for 20 years and it’s definitely not hard being a fan right now lol, much rather have them do crazy experimentation shit than have all their album sound alike and not change their sound just because it’ll please some of the fans and get them a lot of radio play. Greatly respect them just making what they want to make instead of chasing commercial success. Some of the stuff on the album is supposedly a lot weirder than either of these 2 singles as well, it’s definitely just not gonna be for some people and that’s fine, doesn’t mean the music is bad tho.

What’s funny to me is that fans generally have appreciated the fact that they don’t make the same album twice. Each album is different than the one before. As a band, they’ve put out albums generally every two or three years, and it’s easy to track their evolution. They started working on this album in 2018. A global pandemic happened, life changed drastically. They finish in 2020. This album is seven years after their last. If we’re going by their old habits, they would be thinking about album three in that time at this point. Of course this sounds different from what they’ve done before.

This whole song gets better and better every listen. I was unsure at first but now i listen every day.
The part where it builds and then resolves to the chorus is funny to me because I feel it makes perfect sense in the message of the song.
I cannot get behind your opinion at all on this.

I think the first listen is like, "wtf is going on", but we have to keep in mind that they worked on that album for 4 years. They know all the parts and it is not weird and strange for them anymore. The more I listen to it the more this song makes sense. The whole album will probalby also make more sense after a couple of listens and then we will get into that "oh now I see where you are going ". The more we listen to it, the more we understand it, the less weird and unexpected it will be and the more we will appreciate this music compared to the same old stuff because of this weirdness.
I hope that makes sense haha.

Disagreeing with music versus awful music is not the same thing. I’ve been a big fan of weird music for years, so I don’t mind this. The more you listen to it the more you love it from my experience..
Avenged sevenfold doesn’t allow their fans to control them to make the old music they want them to go back to because if they did that, the fans will be Happy because they got what they wanted out of them. But you would be making the actual artists Sad because you took their creative freedom away just to please your subconscience of wanting to hear their older stuff again… Which is completely not fair.
They already stated their own fanbase is not going to love everything that they do. But all in general, nobody’s obligated to love every single piece of music of anyone’s creation. You can be a big fan of a movie Director, and only like 5 of his movies out of 11 movies he made. You don’t have to love everything an artist does, that’s just not right. Nor are you obligated to because you consider yourself to be a fan..
An artis grows and matures when they get older and go through life experiences. And sometimes in order to tell the newer stories you want within your music, you have to change your whole style to connect with the audience on what we are trying to get the message acrossed with. Just because you don’t agree with a newer style that does not fit for you, that does not mean it’s terrible music.
But that is just my perspective. 😇

In some cases it is an acquired taste but for others is a breathe of fresh air from every single easy to digest cookie cutter song. This in my opinion is more digestible than most of Mr bungles stuff imo. Respect to them for doing what they want and not trying to please everyone.

It's strange because they've always been experimental, so I don't get why people are surprised. I see it as the natural evolution of the band, they've always had those progressive metal and avant-garde influences and now they're expanding on it.

Out of the two songs I’ve released, I’ve kinda figured it out. Think of it like trying to explain a weird dream you had to someone. You’re going to end up in places that make absolutely no sense without the full context (in this case the full album). Some moments will be happy, some exciting, some familiar, and some anxious. With that in mind, these songs started to hit WAY harder.

And that’s the kind of way I’ve seen people speak of it, even M. Shadows. That it’s an album that’s an album experience rather than a singles sort of thing. He said that’s why it was hard to pick what came first because it’s out of context. He described it kind of like their Abbey Road in that it’s a bunch of different flavors and doesn’t sit in the same spot for long.

Being a fan of A7X isn't hard, You just seem to be a fan of a few albums. Every album is different, always has been that way and likely always will be. The more I listen to this song the more I feel elements from all of their albums. The intro feels very experimental which is their current phase. The Chorus gives me City of Evil, Self Titled and a lot of Diamonds in the rough sounds. The more and build stuff with the riff is very simple and powerful yet somewhat dry, like Hail to the King.. at least to me. The thrash part is Sounding the Seventh Trumpet and Waking the Fallen. The soft part before the Thrash is The Stage.
The only one I struggle with is placing Nightmare in this song, but there are so many small elements that clearly sound Nightmare like. Thinking about in more in depth... I guess I can mention the ending really reminds me of Danger Line, So Far Away, Tonight the World Dies, and Victim. A lot due to the bluesy guitar playing but also due to the way shadows delivers the vocals in parts of those songs.
In no way do I believe that Sevenfold made this song as a mash up of their styles and their new experimentation but to me, I feel that way a lot. Would be wild tho if they made this in a way as a thank you to the fans by naming the song We Love You and hitting essentially every main genre they've played.. outside of country but even then the Bluesy end flirts with it.

As far as the musical direction is concerned I love what they’re doing. Metal has a barrier and a formula. Everything outside of that isn’t deemed “metal” or the band “sold out” or “sucks” I hope the rest of the record is equally as bipolar and all over the place. I enjoy it.

I’m not a hardcore A7X and I’ve only been listening to them for a couple of years. That said, it seems that a lot of long time fans have complained about this or that from Hail to the King on. If you look at truly epic, once in a generation groups like The Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, Nirvana, Metallica, Faith No More, etc they are always experimenting and then by natural consequence losing and gaining fans.If you don’t evolve, you are unlikely to become great and I think that’s what A7X wants. There is a massive difference between “Love me do” and “I am the Walrus,” or between “Babe I’m gonna leave you,” and “Misty Mountain Hop.” Evolve. And some fans are stuck back in the days of “Unholy Confessions.”

Doesnt this sound like certain people that listen to this band that want them to be like they used to. Chasing the high of the old shit, wanting the band to meet their wants and needs.
The entire song is an allegory for consumerism and capitalism, but theres a lot to be said about "youre one in a million, dont you know, and we love you". Until you dont.

It’s not hard being an Avenged Sevenfold fan it’s actually quite easy, considering we’re being spoonfed some of the best music ever, I don’t know why this is hard for people to understand when the band has never stuck to one individual sound ever. Every album is different you’re not a lifelong fan, if you don’t understand that. And I’m not saying that you have to like it but don’t say it’s hard being a fan just because they didn’t make something you like.

Their wannabe Guns N Roses 2.0 phase sucked in a lot of casual fans that can't handle the more experimental stuff.

@@dougf9900 oh, what the fuck do you mean wanna be Guns N’ Roses, oh no, they made a hard rock album, so that’s just exclusively Guns N’ Roses yeah you’re so right, I will admit, I didn’t really think about the audience that hail to the King would bring in so I do get more main stream listeners might not like it, but the people who are lifelong fans should understand that the band has always evolved with every album

This feels a bit more cohesive on second listens. Its fairly straight forward from a structure point of view, its just the contrasting styles that make it seem disjointed first time.
I think the first 4 minutes are meant to be their musical expression of the theme they're going for, which seems to be about greed and capitalism ans conaumerism etc (hence the "we love you").
The last two minutes, even from a production point of view compares to the rest, is like a deep breath away from these concepts in modern society - its like they're saying "take a breather, step outside, and appreciate what you have". They've left in those guitar slide string scrapes that gives it this raw, natural feeling too.

I think if you wanna get anything out of this music, you have to let go of the genres and categories and just take in the art that's presented to you. At this point I don't care if music sounds thrashy or artsy. It's just ideas, and fresh ideas are more interesting and valuable to me than tired ones. The last thing I want is for Avenged to make the equivalent of a 72 Seasons. That's the point at which I will stop listening.

I still don't understand how they worked on this album for 4 years yet the mixing and production is so bad, really gets in the way of my enjoyment of the album. And I have to agree on the vocals too, really not a fan of Matt's sung vocals on this album
I do love some songs off the album, cosmic especially, but as whole it's not for me, I'm glad they're experimenting though, I do think it's an improvement over the last album and feel like if they carry on with this sound the next album could be amazing

Avenge sevenfold has put out nothing but the best music, I do not understand any of the complaints for the stage I did it was experimental and not what people wanted, but most people I.C.E talk about Avenged Sevenfold only really likes city of evil and that’s it lifelong Avenged Sevenfold fans like myself know not to expect anything Like their old sounds when a new album comes out they change their sound every album while maintaining the ability to sound like a Avenged Sevenfold they’ve never lost that you can not enjoy something for sure but to say it doesn’t sound like Avenged Sevenfold is completely wrong, I think the stage is hands-down, one of their best albums. I honestly think all of their albums are their best albums the only album I don’t listen to often or regularly is sounding the seventh trumpet.

The mundane repetitiveness i think is supposed to make you uncomfortable and almost annoyed. Like the message it’s probably tryna cross. The only part of life is to build build build..more more more. Maybe calling out humans who want more and to take more for self agendas..greed. Also probably calling out the big suits and labels…we love you! Your one in a million. Shout out to Pink Floyd’s “money”.
