  • Well after having the new gaskets for nearly a year, Dave finally did the valve cover gaskets, however while the covers were out also wanted to give them a freshen up with some wrinkle paint. It's really transformed the engine bay.

    Awsome video! just subscribed! I bought my 540 like a month ago and when i changed the plugs i had a lot of oil above the plugs... since its above the plugs the only way for the oil to get above the plugs must be from a leaking valve gasket, right? well it cant be from the plugs and theres no oil in the cylinder under the plugs... my 540 got 300.000km...... and didnt get any service for the last 40000km... thanks for doing this video!

    Was you getting oil in the spark plug holes? Along with an engine misfire?

      There, was a little in one of the cylinders, but it was much at all. The car actually ran ok, just wanted to do the plugs as we had no idea when they were last done.

    Regarding putting the gaskets back in, did you have any issues with them not sticking in place or moving around when placing the covers back on?

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  2 роки тому

      Yes it was quite tricky, especially on the RHS one. I ended up using dots of superglue to hold the gasket in place while wiggling the rocker cover in to position.

    Hello from Covid Vancouver- 99 540i 200km. Same thing bought the gaskets time to do nice video. What about torque for the bolts? Just not over tight? Do you tighten in a pattern or just tighten. Also i have had the car for 9 years and am on my 3 coolant bottle??? Is this unusual? Cheers. In British Columbia it will be eligible for collector plates in 4 years, I hope it holds together until then.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  4 роки тому

      Hi Wilf, Sorry for the late reply. Regarding the torque, you can actually feel the nuts bottom out, so we didn't bother with a torque wrench, but you don't want to go past that point or you will break something. We did do them in a few stages, to try and evenly compress the gasket. So finger tight, a little bit more, then final tighten, working from the outside in. To be honest in the 3 E39 Dave owns they all have decent coolant bottles, so maybe you have just been unlucky, but then 9 years is a long time too. Have you always used new ones? Will you save much money once you can put it on collector plates?

      @@ZeroTo60Tube Thanks for the prompt reply. BC does not have competition when it comes to insurance. So yes I believe my annual insurance with Max good driver disc is 1800 per year and collector is $450. It can't be your daily driver. Gonna tackle the gaskets and some new plugs tomorrow.

      @@ZeroTo60Tube Hi guys so this past long weekend tackled the valve cover gaskets and did the plugs as well. I believe at the front of your video 20 min was mentioned my total time about 8 hrs the second side was quicker. The injector clips were definitely the source of grief. So in any future videos if you run into a WTH situation take the time and make it super clear as all your fans will appreciate your effort. Thanks again Wilf

    I've been meaning to do this to my 540iA since I got it in December 2018, problem was half of the videos I saw were a bit naff and long winded and I could never decide on what finish to re-do the covers in. Until now! I'm without a doubt going to do this! Just out of curiosity, what brand of gaskets did you go for?

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  4 роки тому +2

      We went with cheaper aftermarket ones. Valve Cover Gaskets - amzn.to/2GuaRhj or via ebay.to/36Bpr0Z. We used to run a car parts business back in the day and can generally tell which of the aftermarket brands to avoid. These have been in for a little over a month now and everything is all dry around them.

    I wonder how these will last. After two seasons my magnesium valve covers starter to peel. Next time I will get mine powdercoated.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  4 роки тому

      We have used wrinkle coat before and had good results, it must have some extra special chemicals in it, as it much more robust than pain. But it will definitely depend on the metal underneath. Fingers crossed it lasts like we expect.

      I'd say thats exactly what is in the Duplicolor tins. I guess if it doesn't stop the corrosion and the metal underneath the paint is still corroding its going to be a problem. I can only assumed the thickness and strength of powder coating helps container everything much better. Have you got any pics of your engine with the covers done?

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  4 роки тому

      Its very easy, the thing you could probably mess up is over tightening the nuts when you re-assemble. Other than that, set aside a few hours and definitely have a crack. If you have any specific questions just let us know.

      @@ZeroTo60Tube I have a oil leak in my 540i ( Just bought and has 180km on it ) would this generally be from here or the oil pan gasket? I know BMWS tend to leak oil I was just wondering if this would be a good first place to start

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  4 роки тому +2

      @@Vikturus22 It could be from anywhere, but don't stress. What i would recommend doing is cleaning all of the oil residue off the motor. That means a very good degrease of everything. Then once its clean you will be able to see where the oil is coming from. It will be the best way to make sure you dont replace anything that doesnt need replacing.
