Not usually a fan of Shostakovich, but in terms of music alone, (not the theme of the ballet) this is just… so good.

I saw this performance live at Bolshoi Theatre and the passion and intensity of this tango in particular was just a-ma-zing. Great, great performances from all four principals in this ballet, but Mikhail Lobukhin in particular was OUTSTANDING!!!

This is not tango. It's ballet.

@@lizhutchinson6978 I know that! Clearly it's ballet and not pure tango. I was there. This particular section of The Golden Age is entitled "Tango".

Lucky you. I saw it there in 1983 when it debuted and have remembered it ever since. The Bolshoi was scheduled to bring it to the States when it toured here several years ago. Alas, it didn't. So I was thrilled when the Bolshoi offered it as part of its cinema series in 2018 (I think it was). Couldn't buy my ticket fast enough. And, yes, I have the DVD. FYI: I just came across a video of it on UA-cam, filmed when it was performed for the choreographer's birthday. I also just came across a video of the 1983 one I saw, with that cast---the dancers it was mounted on. Finding that thrilled me even more. It has, alas for me, a pre-show commentary in Russian, but the full ballet is there and dance transcends language.

What a bastardization of tango. Horrible.

That's kind of the point. This was created in Soviet Russia under Stalin, so everything had to criticise western culture and venerate Russian culture. At least, that's what it at least had to look like.
However, the composer Shostakovich really meant this as a criticism of the Soviets basically butchering culture, replacing it with their own messages of "social realism", i.e. that socialism, classic Russian culture and Stalin are good, everyone and everything else is bad.
Really this is a jazz piece pretending to be classical Russian music. It's not really a tango at all.
You should try looking this stuff up. It helps to have the proper context and perspective on these things to understand them fully. And the history behind it is pretty cool too!

Shostakovich did not understand anything about music. It is a pity that you were not there when he wrote the music for this ballet.
