Pulau Sudong: An off-shore military site with a "secret" runway

The Pulau Senang prison island initiative in 1960 proposed to send prisoners to the then-uninhabited Pulau Senang to build settlements, where they could enjoy a measure of freedom while contributing to society and earning redemption.
Under the helm of Daniel Dutton, an idealist who believed anyone could be redeemed through hard work, the initiative seemed the perfect solution for the rampant organised crime and sense of lawlessness that plagued Singapore at the time.
Alas, Dutton's alleged harsh treatment of detainees caused growing unrest that eventually broke into violence.
