I love this film. M. Night said himself he was trying to make his own “So has it’s good B-Movie” that him and his dad grew up on, and I think he absolutely succeeded. It’s silly and over the top in all the best ways, and downright horrific in all the best ways. Loved it since I saw it in theaters opening weekend and still love it to this day.
Oh my God dude you had me at the alien analogy! How did you So perfectly identify exactly how it feels too watch this movie?! The old lady even called it lemon drink instead of lemonade.
Please make more video essays like this. I really enjoy your perspective and sense of humor. I could listen to you talk about one movie for the actual duration of a movie.
Anyone else think The Village is M. Night's masterpiece?? Every bit of dialogue is so specific, resonant themes, Deakins, insane cast, Newton Howard's score. I love it!!
The Village is amazing until it falls apart in the last third of the movie. Still, thats his thing : he has great ideas and setups, and then kinda goes nowhere with it
I know these types of videos are A LOT more work but I really enjoy them. Jaws and Robocop were a delight as well. Thank you for the content you are producing, Dan. I've enjoyed your work for a long time.
It's more like Birdemic, imo. The random exposition by side characters, the dramatic death of characters we learn nothing about for the 3 whole minutes they're on screen, the "environmental" message, the acting, the weird edits, the insane director who thinks this is all amazing and he's totally amazing and his movie is awesome... Yeah, it's Birdemic.
I actually think this movie is good and mostly because of the premise, I think it's such a cool premise it holds all the stuff mentioned in this video. As usual though, great job Dan. Congratulations on your new channel.
I'd go as far as to say it's NOT bad and it's classic Shyamalan but more along the lines of classic Hitchcock. Watching it with LIVING THROUGH COVID eyes brought it to a new level for me
I'm a big fan of the movie. To me it feels like Shyamalan went out of his way to make a movie that keeps you on your toes. At no point is there anything 'happening' that you could've seen coming or predicted. Whenever you're certain things are gonna turn right, it goes left. Does this result in a great movie in the literal definition, no, but for me it just sticks out as a cinematic accomplishment.
M Night has claimed before that the film is an homage to 50's B movies and the like, so a lot of the flaws are intentional. Make of that what you will. (And he said this before it came out so it's not a response to the criticism I think)
Again, this movie is brilliant and ahead of its time. It’s interesting to see all these critics talking like they’re big s but they don’t get the concepts in Movies. But they’re getting all the hits
A few years ago my local news reported that the pollen counts were going to higher than the previous summer and that people with allergies should be more careful outside. Well the office admin at my old job took this report very seriously. He posted signs all over the office warning people of dangerous pollen levels. So I printed off a few pictures of Marky Mark from the happening and taped them to the signs. He got so mad that he emailed me a cease and desist email or I would be written up! I don’t think he even got the joke but my coworkers thought it was hilarious and spammed him with Wahlberg photos the rest of the year!
Dude, I am just like you - drawn to this film like The Room because deep down, there is some magic in the madness of its shiteness lol Cheers for your in depth vid mate, new fan from Australia :)
I remember seeing this movie in theaters and HATING it. I was like, "What did I just watch?". I kept waiting for M Night's twist...and...it was just the plants all along. Now, I've come to appreciate it for how bad it is. Plus, the 'What, no!" line is one of my favorites ever.
Would love more of these "Why I love.." Jaws and Robocop are great but it's the "bad" movies like this that are interesting to here about. One of my favourite "bad" movies is Judge Dredd (1995)
A terrible movie I absolutely love is The Core. The premise is bat shite crazy, the acting is completely over the top, and DJ Qualls "hacking the Earth."
It’s a real “we’ve had enough of experts” film. Google tells me it had a $115 million budget and hats off to them barely spending a cent of that on a scientific consultant. In many ways The Core would have been the perfect 2016 movie. On The Happening, it’s crazy to see two of the main leads of Succession in that trainwreck
1. Do more of this, like a whole series. I love it. 2. Hudson Hawk is my all time guilty pleasure. "Bunny ball-ball!" 3. I'm a fellow FSU alum. Go Noles!
The Phantom is one of my favorite bad movies. A 1996 superhero movie based on a comic strip starring Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Treat Williams, and James Remar. Williams and Zeta-Jones know exactly what kind of movie they are in. Everyone else turns in the most earnest performances. I love it!
I strongly feel the story of (THE HAPPENING) should deserve to be made into a show series. The reason why is because I honestly really liked the movie of (THE HAPPENING) & yet I did not like the way it had ended that being it ended with a cliffhanger ending.
This is, seriously, one of the best videos Dan has ever done...and that's sayin' something! Also, he has made it safe for us, the "Wisely Reticent Admirers of The Happening" (WRATH), to finally make ourselves known! The Horror Of this Wondrous Comedy Of Meaningless Egress (HOWCOME?) genre has never been better represented on screen!
When I saw his wife I first thought she looked too young to be married and then I thought she had a psychiatric condition and that this explained why they acted so distant. It has a rare surrealistic feel that seems meant to bring a intellectual, artistic dimension and yes, it's almost like art. (was a happening not a performance art expression? ) .
What's sad for me is I did enjoy this movie. I'm not crazy. I think some of it worked and what did work is never given a fair shot. I watched this video hoping they would sincerely justify me liking this
My first thought was "are you serious" and then I see, lol. This is awesome!! I highly recommend Chris Stuckmann's Hilariocity review, and the Nostalgia Critics review on this too.
I love that scene where Mark Wahlberg stops the class for no reason is so funny, felt like a piece of dialogue he didn't want to say so he just said "nothing" and they continued with the scene😂
@@jbearclowater I think he tries a different drug with each movie to see where it takes him. Whatever M Night took when he came up with this movie should forever be a pass.
It's so weird how I enjoyed The Happening when I watched it, and thought it was a weird as heck apocalyptic ride that made no sense but also was cool. And now watching those clips, it's like I'm watching the worst acting and script in a hollywood movie.
I've never thought this movie was terrible and I still don't. It's not great but it gets far more hate then it deserves. Sure, the movie is very quirky (plus it just didn't age well in the dialogue area), but the whole idea is that you are supposed to put yourself in the shoes of the people in the story. It is then that the movie is actually terrifying. Yes, the characters say weird shit and act strange, but that's the point, people would act strange and say weird shit if the events in The Happening actually ever occurred... I mean think about it, if plants released a weird chemical that cause people to kill themselves (as strange as that sounds) and there was no way of stopping it and there was nowhere safe to go, it would be a horrifying experience to have to live through, if you could. Within that context, the more is far better. Outside if it, yeah its strange. Context matters.
Great video! "On the other hand, no he doesn't and this movie is dumb." had me rolling! Makes me kind of want to actuallly see this movie. signed, viewer with the screen name of Calcifer Boheme.
I think MNS was deliberately trying to make a film that was stilted and hammy, like a schlocky 50s horror movie. Kind of like Tim Burton did with Mars Attacks. But he wasn't brave enough to truly ham it up, so the audience was never let in on the joke.
The first time I watched this in the theater I walked out a few minutes in to the mass suicides and into an animated movie in the theater next door! Later, when I saw it at home I realized it was a lot more funny than scary past that point. Oh well! Keep up the good work, critic named Dan!

A good horror movie does NOT have to have a "satisfying" ending where the villain is defeated.
Case in point, Jeepers Creepers.
