Steve Cropper Chord Chops: R&B Guitar Lesson
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 січ 2018
- I was playing around with "Soul Man" and thought it'd be a neat idea to take Steve Cropper's iconic riff and stretch out with it a bit. I reversed it, moved it to different chords, different positions, and added some snappy fills.
Fun stuff!

Eric Haugen is like the Mr. Rogers of youtube guitar instructors. I mean that in the best possible way. So encouraging and affirming.
I’ve fallen in a deep Steve Cropper hole this last week or so. Really happy to find this👍🏻 that last little lick was so nice!
Not a bad place to be at all!
And yeah - I forgot about that "stinger" lick I put on the end :-)
Hot shot clickbait stuff fo' sho'
Very tasteful rhythm riffing. Your demo approach is also very good. Neither too fast nor too slow, and lots of useful theory references. Super helpful. I like your influences, amigo.
Thanks my fellow Eric!
I’ve known the CAGED system for years, but somehow Eric’s lessons always make me appreciate it more and see it in new lights.
Yeah! It's a simple enough concept to understand, but if we force ourselves to keep using it to sort out possibilities it really does absorb everything!
You’re the Bob Ross of guitar instruction.
That is the highest praise anyone could give me! Thank You!
Gotta work on my 'fro, though :-D
Eric Haugen here’s a happy little chord change.
happy little mistakes
Bob Ross with the face of Eric Clapton.
yep
I genuinely believe that your the best channel for learning Eric, not just for great styles and talent but for spot on tone too, thank you
Aw shucks thanks so much! I work really hard on making these vids look good, sound good, and give little playing level ups - and it’s all a labor of love! I’m glad that comes across!
What a fantastic lesson. Every time you start with "So what I'm thinking here is..." you end with a priceless pearl. Putting these in the framework for how you "see" chords on the fretboard is so useful. Thanks for putting this together.
Thanks David!
For me, the fretboard is just a series of chord shapes that change depending on what key I'm in. I find it's a lot easier for me to think of things that way. I can quickly add little licks, tricks, and fills to chords.
I'm terrible at remembering giant scales :-D
Yes, agree 100%. Most useful when guitarists refer back to what the theory is behind what they’re playing. Helps the rest of us learn.
Lots to dig into on this one! I love your lessons on R&B styles. I always like hearing a little about the players you are influenced by.
Thanks so much, Judson!
The Colonel understated style always appeals to me - he's one of the great non-shred guitar heroes :-D
Very nice! Watched this several times, slowed it down and got the groove. Having a blast with this down in New Zealand, keep up the great work man!
Hi Eric, thanks so much for posting these great lessons. I’ve found them to be the perfect combination of tasty licks and accessible theory - I’ve been getting a huge amount out of them. Loving the Marc Ribot stuff as well...
Keep up the good work,
Cheers, Jeff.
Thanks!
That’s what I love to hear!
I read somewhere that we’re the happiest when we’ve trying to do something 4% harder than we’re used to - that’s what I strive for 🤙
In just my life's experiences, that 4% is about the most accurate estimation of what keeps us mentally charged to keep us hungry👍👍
Tab purchased and being thoroughly enjoyed once again. This stuff is for real! Thank you so much
The colonel! Always a good idea to work on his stuff!
Eric you make it look so easy. Your a mighty talented musician!! Keep up the great postings ✌🏻
Thanks so much, Wilbert!
Don't worry - I won't stop posting until I'm out of ideas to share. There's so much good music to dissect!
You had me at "Steve Cropper". Once again, fantastic stuff Eric.
Love the playing Eric. You're a real inspiration. Keep it up!
Thanks so much, Jacob!
Don't worry, I have no intention of stopping :-D
Whaow! Great tutorial. One of the best teacher on UA-cam for sure!
Thanks so much!
I try to keep things chill, informative, and encouraging- it’s all about playing smarter, not faster 😎
Fantastic! Thanks.
Your videos and lessons are very inspiring! You're teaching me a lot. Thanks. Keep it up.
It's my pleasure, Peter!
Don't worry - I won't stop until I've shared every song, lick, riff, and trick I like :-D
Your tone is always ON POINT man.
Thanks so much, Nick!
Tone is the first thing I listen for :-D
I always try to sound organic and warm, with just a hint of grit. The strymon deco really nails that.
Cool. Great work!
Beautiful. You make it all look so effortless
Thanks so much D!
Love the sound!
Thanks Fredrik!
Hey Eric...great lesson. Steve was hugely influential in a very unique and humble way. I'm listening to what you put together inspired by Steve and I'm hearing people like Bob Weir from The Grateful Dead and even Ry Cooder. Thanks.
Oh yeah! All those fellas are classy, smart, and groovy!
My kinda hero too!
So good. I’m gonna steal from this for sure. Thanks
Super progression!
Beautiful tele ❤
Oh man, such great stuff! After slaughtering my fingers for a week or so with Freddie's 'Yonder Wall' bends, I'm looking forward to this melody-making/callus-regenerating ideas (lol).
Thanks a lot Eric!
Yeah! Those bends will do a number on your fingertips!
It's nice to sit back and groove with some more chordal-based stuff :-)
rock on!
Thanks great lesson
Beautiful sound.
Thanks Pat!
This is such a wonderful lesson, thanks.
Thanks Daniel!
Thanks for the easy to understand breakdown.
Excellent lesson thankyou. Love to learn more about this chordal style R & B style and also the soul/r&b curtis mayfield chordal embellishment style. Love your guitar sound. cheers
Thanks buddy!
There's so much going on in those classic soul/r&b tunes! Very tasteful stuff.
I always have to watch these lessons about three times on average. Once for the intended lesson (in this case, Steve cropper style comping), once to wrap my head around the many nearly subconscious lessons (for example, with this one, how to think about someone else’s work in a way that enables you to adapt it to your own fundamental playing style), and once just because I like music quite a little bit. And also, side note, that’s a crazy good neck position tone.
Thanks so much for supporting me on patreon too!
Yeah - I’m all about taking the ideas from my faves, and seeing what happens when I put them in a new context!
I’m a huge fan as well. That’s how we expand the vocabulary. I may have borrowed the sixths lick from this video and adapted it for my modular synth. Blasphemous, I know. The bend was tricky. It worked well over a VI-I vamp.
@@nathanricker1 ooooh delicious blasphemy!
First Shuggie and now this! Eric, y'all are gettin' me funky! Thanks!
It's my pleasure, Maggie!
I really love all the old soul/stax/motown stuff. Such great songs with perfect understated musicianship.
And thank you so much for your generous donation to my channel!
It's much appreciated!
Steve Cropper was my very first guitar influence! As a child, my mom had the 45 of Dock O the Bay that I wore out the grooves with my Fisher-Price turntable.
What a great song! Just perfect.
One of the first 45 RPM’s I bought as well!
Beautiful Tele!
Great lesson very inspiering. Love your ideas and sound. Please do more of those old soul / R&B playing style
Thanks so much, Roee!
Don't worry, I'll keep posting vids like this. Old school soul/r&b is one of my favorite kinds of music!
Eric, there's a pile of people on UA-cam with possibly 'better' technique but you are the king for having a beautiful sound and playing the 'right ' thing. There are plenty of great guitar players too, but you are the real thing -a musician. Thanks for keeping it real.
Thanks C.P.!
I realized a long time ago that I was never gonna be the fastest or flashiest guitarist, so instead I focused on having good tone and making up cool parts :-D
Right in the same boat...I take the term 'slow' to a new level...so it's now all about melodic phrasing...
Great utilisation lesson thanks Eric
It's my pleasure!
Have fun with it!
Nice one.... more gems filed away in the noggin.... as always, love your work brother
Long live the Colonel!
Great video lesson!!! Thank you!!!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
My pleasure Roger!
Great video. Can't wait to explore this idea all day :D
It's my pleasure! Sounds like a fun way to spend a day!
Just wanted to say how much your explanations are appreciated. Too often, the theory discussion ends with what key were in.
Thanks Jim!
I try to share things as I see them - not necessarily every single note I play, but the structures and frameworks I'm utilizing. It's all about shapes!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Exactly! That helps so much. Telling us you're run is switching from 6th to 3rds, then you're playing some major notes in A...wow.
Hey man really enjoying your videos. Thanks.
My pleasure, man!
It makes me happy to know that my vids are providing some info-tainment for everyone staying at home!
Steve Cropper is still my favorite of all time.
Yeah! Just so much class. A real southern gentleman. The Colonel!
AWESOME!
Thanks Oz!
Holy shit. Thank. i felt like my guitar playing was getting stale then this video popped up. Game changer!
Oh yeah - I always revisit the colonel when I need some inspiration!
Another great lesson!
Thanks man!
Awesome Great lesson!
+TinyE Monroe Thanks so much!
I'm glad you liked the vid!
I always thought about Steve Cropper as kinda country player, you comfort me in this idea, great lesson about inversions by the way.
Totally! He walks that line quite comfortably.
The more I investigate old r&b/soul the more I notice just how deft those players were with music theory :-D
Yeah agree, usually very simple and effective playing rooted in deep knowledge of what they were doing.
Isn't it the goal of any musician?
real good stuff!
Thanks so much, Phil!
Eric, as always dude you explain and play things that are achievable.. Love it.. I need to book another skype soon..
Thanks JT! I bet this idea sounds killer in open D!
Can't wait to see what you do with it!
Awesome Soul Brother, gonna spin Otis Redding tonight! R&B Friday night Jam! Thank-You
Otis is the man!
I love all the classic soul/stax/r&b stuff. Marvin/Al Green/Wilson Picket/Sam Cooke/etc - so much great music!
These were the good ole days
Great lesson
+starw60 Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked the vid!
Awesome tele, awesome player...
Thanks so much, Michael!
Nice Eric, very nice
Thanks so much, Karl!
Awesome
Thanks Jesse! Those Cropper Chord partials are pretty dang cool!
Hey man, I was just watching another vid about 6th's and incorporating them and I thought to myself 'I bet that dude that knows the Tom Waits stuff will have good insight' I look up and boom there you are next in the playlist...lol...You're taste and talent precede you!... BTW, I really dig the idea of triad substitution...It creates a rhythmic flow that I never tried before
...Thanks as always...
Ha! That's awesome! Thanks for letting me know!
All the praise the magnanimous UA-cam algorithm!
Ha...The odds are with you Luke...
Great lesson Eric. Re reference to Ron Wood - thinking 'Pineapple and the Monkey'.
Oooooh good idea!
Really enjoyed this one. On this same subject of using triad inversions, you might want to check out the bobby fuller four, especially the solo on their version of I fought the law. Might make for a cool lesson.
Great song! This comment led to watch a classic clip from 1966 with go-go dancers and everything. I love those old tv variety shows. And yeah, that'd make a great lesson on chord inversions!
Nice tele!
Thanks! It's a 90s CIJ with factory bigsby!
Great lesson. When you did the Bm inversion on the 7th fret, I was thinking E9 partial. I guess it depends what the bass player is doing at that moment. lol.
Totally! It's all about the bass!
It's kinda crazy how whatever the bass player does changes the color of everything else.
Your getting a great sound
Thanks Arthur!
I was really happy with how this one came out!
Very Grateful Dead sounding, I am not familiar with him (Steve Cooper) But very cool ! TY Eric ! 😁✌
Oh yeah, very Jerry/Weir thing with these inversions!
Hey bro, great channel, if you feel moved to ever do a lesson on Angel n' Heavy syrup I would dig that
Oooh cool song! Thanks for the rec!
I have a 65 silvertone 1484. it breaks up well and fairly early. do you bridge channel 2 with channel 1 and use channel one as a bright?
a good demo of that amp would be cool.
Thanks for the lesson.
Noted you did a traffic song Rock And Roll Stew about a year ago, I was wondering if you would consider doing "Dealer" off of Traffic's debut album Mr Fantasy.....there is no UA-cam post for this song........
Oooh good idea! I absolutely love Traffic.
One of my first favorite bands - totally forgotten classic rock geniuses.
Enjoy your posts, look forward to seeing your take on Dealer...
You’re the fucking best
Dude, many thanks my man!
Could you do a tutorial for bill frisell's version of surfer girl by the beach boys?
Oooh good idea! I'll add it to my "cool stuff to figure out" list :-D
More Ron Wood sweetness please!! Ronnie for President!
Good call!
Ronnie is my absolute favorite player of the major pentatonic. The way he played in Faces was just perfect! Raw, soulful, and so musical!
@@EricHaugenGuitar raw, soulful and musical is everything you need!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
inversions.... assignment learn 10 different A chords all over the neck within the 3.7 guitar octaves.......
That'd be a great exercise!
Love the half tone chord slide up. I used to do this for hours at gigs. There's also a slide down chord that can sometimes work. You are my favorite teacher. Know the notes and the fretboard lights up with possibilities!
Sound like a meshing of Steely Dan and Doobie Bros!
(well, maybe not, but if that guess worked before ... well, ya gotta go with what works).
Ha!
Eventually I'll something will sounds like Steely Dan again :-D
Luv what u do Eric.
But since you hate naming fret numbers, why not put chord diagrams in during post- production. I prefer that for two reasons:
1) naming fret numbers messes with the flow of the lesson, and
2) I learn better visually (diagrams instead of numbers).
And you don't have to slow the flow naming fret numbers.
Win win!
Thanks for the amazing lessons!
I agree - these days I throw up diagrams on screen ✔️
No Close Captions???
The intro has Jerry Garcia written all over it
Guilty as charged!
Jerry's the man.
First song sounds like Grateful Dead
Nice! sounds lil bit like mac de marco
Thanks! That dude's cool as hell. Gotta work some of his stuff out.
Please work some of his stuff out.Yes he is cool as hell and you are cool as well too. Thanks for all these awesome videos. i just want to keep on learning from you
Ashraf Rahman hes a has been and he’s first album was good but the rest was just trash tbh
Serious question - do you drink or use any mind-altering substances?
Not anymore - in my 20s I did some weed and mushrooms, nothing crazy. I've lost several friends to Heroin/harder stuff, so I always steer clear of that scene.
I still like a good cocktail on the weekends, though!
@@EricHaugenGuitar same here, I was just curious. I'm older than you, but lifelong professional musician in "recovery". I do l8ke a craft beer or 3 but nothing heavy and I never drink around the house. I find weed to be counterproductive and demotivating to say the least. Again, I was curious, just wanted to get reinforcement that this pursuit can be done with a clear head 😊
Oh yeah keep it clean brother!
I used to think weed made for better jams, but when I listen back to the tapes it’s quite clear that’s not actually the case! Sure, we were having fun, and thought we were splitting the universe open, but really we were all just hyper-self focused and overplaying 🤦♂️
@@EricHaugenGuitar exactly... It's definitely a dumbing-down catalyst as well. I really enjoy your videos man... We are into a lot of the same artists: I'm a huge cross-genre guy myself, big fan of Richard Thompson! Only artist I've ever seen live twice 😊 keep it up!
