This is the greatest Soul Sax Player long before smooth jazz etc. This is truly a Soul Instrumental Classic for everyone who grew up in the 60s.
    Jr. Walker is the best!!

The raw style of this R&B classic is brilliant with smooth jazz-like background.

I saw him play this at the Howard theater in '65 and he always seem to be dancing when he was playing like he was happy. Was a bad show, with Gladys Knight singing Giving Up and Chuck Jackson singing Any Day Now. Wow we don't know how good we had it back then, WOW.

bigdadday bubblejomay I was in the audience too. Maybe the only white kid there. I went to the Howard theater at least once a month in 64, 65. Four to five great artists each night for around $2.75. And they didn't chase you out after the first show so you could stay and watch the same artists a second time.

Yes, the music produced in the 60 & 70 set a high bar to follow & only a few are matching there creativity.

Our public pool had stairs up to a flat roof. There was a big dance floor and a jukebox. One summer night, I played this song by mistake. A few of the kids knew how to cha cha and started teaching the rest of us. For the rest of the summer, that song got played at least four times a night and the dance floor would fill with kids lined up doing the cha cha. Not with partners, just in lines. I think we invented the line dance.

How fortunate we were to have grown up listening to this wonderful music compared to the "crap" that is being played now. Jr. was one of those rare artists that never made a bad recording...just the very best!

A wondrous infusion of soul, funk, blues and jazz. I was privileged to see the great man perform live at Tolworth in Surrey back in the early 1980s. He deserved a bigger audience.

Loved his sound. It was Jr. who got me into playing overtones on the sax. I have a 9th above the natural range and with a good reed, I can add another 4th. There were so many good musicians back in the day who never really got their due. I think Jr was one of them.

Just imagine that the cats such as Junior Walker, King Curtis, Sil Austin, Red Prysock, Earl Bostic, Louis Jordan... were popping out Altissimo Overtones since...way back when - the 50s and 60s.
Junior's altissimos A, D and super G sound clear, clean and bright.
He has had a beautiful tone and style which have been personalized.
I can recognize his sound-voice very audibly and distinctly.
Although Junior has been more of a soulful, Pop instrumentalist, Junior's saxophone sound-voice quality can be heard descending and ascending from the saxophones of such jazz icons as Wilton Felder, and Ronnie Laws; the former with exotic bellicosity; the latter, with romantic smoothness.
Junior Walker has been winning fans from North and South America, European and West Indies, Africa and Asia - no ordinary feat to accomplish.
He has effectively integrated his saxophonic dexterity with his vocal artistry.
Oh, how we'd dance the night away to: These Eyes, What Does It Take, Hold on To The Feeling, Shot Gun...!
Junior Walker, RIP! Wilton Felder, RIP!
    Michael Breaker, RIP!
    Bob Berg, RIP!
Thanks for reminding us what a great saxophonist and wonderful person Junior Walker has been.

In Arthur Conley's remake of Sam Cooke 's "Yeah! Yeah!" into "Sweet Soul Music", Arthur paid tributes to Wilson Pickett with his "Mustang Sally", to Otis Redding with his "Fa Fa Fa...", to Lou Rawls, and to James Brown as the "King of Them All".
Oh, how could he have been so remiss (and neglectful) of Junior Walker who was effectively and appreciably multitasking!
Stratospherically and hauntingly "tenor "saxing", soulfully singing, dancing and interacting pleasingly with the audience was Junior Walker - truly the "hardest" working entertainer in "showbiz".
The Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York saw how he literally took the audience off its feet with his energetic and crowd-pleasing performances - non stop!
    JW:RIP!

Fond memories are evoked. Notice that the guitarist creates a balance between playing segments of the melody with Walker and yet settling for a strumming role for the latter at other moments. So, it should not be a surprise that although the tenor saxist was the featured player, it was guitarist Willie Woods who composed the sweet-and-simple 16 bars.

Hi Richard, I am a guitar player in Los Angeles and I basically learned R&B guitar by listening to Booker T and the MGs and Junior Walker. i particularly liked his guitarist Willie Woods even though all the band were at the top of their game ,and I wore out the records copying his stuff. Sounds easy but take a lot of time to get it right. Know what? It was worth it. DD in L.A.

This was the background theme used when Lloyd Fatman Smith was huckstering (WHAT-AM 1340) used (abused) cars on his "Plymouth Chrysler Auto Auction Show" on behalf of a used car dealer on the Oxford Circle in Northeast Philadelphia in the late sixties. The show was to stimulate sales as the radio "sales" was not legally binding, it was entertaining though.

    • @customkey
      @customkey 6 років тому +1

Damn, haven't heard the name Lloyd Fatman in a minute. He used to play trumpet a little bit and he would be downstairs from the radio booth at 1am in a bar sitting in with the band and the record would be on the turntable upstairs spinning over and over, the needle repeating in the deadwax. Lloyd was a character.
