even with a stroke and having lost most of what made him a legend, he embodies more rock n' roll and heavy metal history than 99.9% of the guitarist alive today... hats off to you Dave (and your brother Ray).. the Kinks were the OG.
The KInks are one of the most underrated never talked about bands they were around back with Beatles and Stones but never get talked about these guys wrote countless great simple driving guitar riffs and tunes
Its okay. As long as pioneers of hard rock, heavy metal and punk allude to them as their original inspirations and influence. The listening public do not have to know.
@Artur Bello I likes stones more than Beatles Nico agrees with me lol, for garage rock kinks are at the top I also like troggs zombies raiders and the Sonics then I like later 60s stuff like stooges
I love it when he asks what visceral means, and then comes back with a musical definition that's relatable and spot on. This is back when music meant something. Touched us in ways that was hard to explain.
He still has those sparkling eyes from his youth which is nice to see as it means he is not finished exploring creating. A brilliant musical artist. Wishing him the very best in his creativity and renewed health.
Play You Really Got Me (The Kinks version of course) in a loud rock club today and it STILL sounds great next to all the other stuff that's come out since. What a legend this guy is. A pioneer.
Because it was their first smash hit, everyone mentions it. The follow up smash, All Day and All of the Night was a better constructed song and even more raw. Perhaps this is why during finales, the group incorporated both songs together, as a duet.
@@thomaspick4123 - I wanted to say the same thing about All Day was that it was even more raw, I dont know if its better constructed but i've always enjoyed it more than You Really got me. I think that maniacal laugh right before the solo makes it even more fun to listen too.
@@thomaspick4123All Day and All of the Night was my favorite as well. That said, I heard You Really Got Me first, as I’m such most did, and you cannot deny the incredible impact. Both songs are stellar, though I agree the last is better constructed and especially Ray’s vocals are much improved!
This is great! FYI, The Ventures' rhythm guitarist is Don Wilson. We have a new documentary out, which covers the wide-ranging influence of The Ventures' sound. It is called 'The Ventures: Stars on Guitars' if interested.
Every musician that isn’t familiar with The Ventures needs to see this film. And shame on you for not knowing of them! I guarantee they influenced your favorite guitar player. They are known as the band that launched a thousand bands! The best!
Brilliant interview. Dave Davies is a true music pioneer, innovative, creative, force of nature. With his brother they were perfect. The songwriting and music is superb. I love Dave and Ray Davies and wish I could see them perform before I die. This body is ancient, yeah I know how you feel. ❤️💋
The Kings were so cool. Great band. Lots of cool playing and a massive influence of punk rock, heavy metal, blues rock, and pretty much everyone after them.
If you listen very closely to the orginal version of, "You Really Got Me", just before the solo, Ray Davies, sings, "Oh no". He does this to cover up Dave telling him to, Fuck off. It is just a blip, but with head phones, if you focus, you can hear it.
Dave is on another plain of existence. He doesn’t see the world as normal/average people do. I’ve had a couple of exchanges with him on Instagram, and he is just wonderful; such an inspiration. Thank you for telling his story. It been so invigorating, creatively, to hear his sound evolve. When it comes to musical evolution I truly put him on par with someone like Jeff Beck. They are both tone chasers and they are always trying to create new soundscapes. Incredible.
One of Rock musics truely great guitar players. When you listen trough all the kinks albums, it seems like he could handle pretty much every different style thrown at him, AND handle it well, as well as being a proper rock guitarist with really good solos. Very listenable, everything he does.
Slashing his amps etc...he was possibly the first punk, he looks good for a guy his age funny how him and Jimmy page dress the same and same accent pretty much I know it's just coincidence
Dave was far more than one sound. In his history, he created so many different guitar tones. Both electric and acoustic, Dave wrote some great guitar riffs and solos. He brought great energy to the stage. I liked his harmony singing also. Dave was an important part of the Kinks sound.
Dave is referring to Don Wilson, rhythm guitarist and founding member of the Ventures. Another example of The Ventures massive influence on budding rock stars of that time. They were innovators and master players and ahead of their time.
Dave Davies is a giant of rock guitar. His guitar tone and solo on ''Moments" literally brings me to tears. It's sooo tasteful, beautiful, musical and moves you in such a way that is just impossible to put into words. What a talent!!!
You really got me is the start of metal and punk all in one song, from the distortion and the heaviness to the vocal angst, it’s all there. That was great Sam. He described the metal vibe when you asked him how the distorted bar cord made him feel. The basic elements where there. He was emboldened by the grandiose and heavy sound... enter in the first metal song. People have been remiss in assigning the proper due because the Kinks didn’t settle into the metal or punk genres throughout their career, but they had both elements in “you really got me” (and other songs). And that’s all it takes to be first.
By the way, if anyone is interested in more discussion about and history of The Ventures....there is a great documentary about them that came out recently called, The Ventures: Stars On Guitars".
btw, grab a copy of one of their last studio albums "Word of Mouth" from 1984..... tell me the guitar work in "Do it again" isn't the stuff of legend...
Thanks for publishing this incredible and important interview! One more point: Dick Dale, who I do really like, did NOT invent Surf guitar, nor Metal-as he claims! The forerunner of Dick Dale was Link Wray who began his solo instrumentals in 1957. Wray pioneered Surf, Grunge, and Metal. He did so by doing just as Dave Davies did with his amp. Wray punched holes in the amp's speaker cone, creating the legendary -and actually banned song, "Rumble." If you love Surf, listen to "Rawhide." If you love Metal, listen to "Deuces Wild!"
Those first kinks records have some really harsh bluesy type guitars and vocals!!..try also the pretty things or cubby and the blizzards or for darker sounds the 13 floor elevators...there's many "pre metal" bands from the sixties to listen!!
@@martingamby9650 And the contents of my rectum, too. Er, who ARE Slayer? Never heard them, honestly. Maybe hear OF them, but even then... And no, I'm not going to Google them.

Still no mention of the other guitar player,. Yeah the guy that plays all the lead fills in during the live performance one more for the road yeah that's the guy who is he ? Anybody know? Please comment or reply if anybody knows who that guy is 💯👌 and one more thing, The kinks did it first the stoned Rose is copied it yeah that's right jumpin Jack flash 🎸 ,,,
Dave Davies cut into the fabric of time when he ripped that speaker and left a lasting impression on guitar players forever.
Yeah. What a great story, eh ?
@@ronaldjames6067 I loved that story!
Didn't Link Ray (amazing similarity of names) also tell a similar story to getting the sound for his instrumental The Rumble?
well put. ⚡️
I don't know if Dave Davis already knew what visceral meant but, if not, credit to him for asking for an explanation.
This is a super important interview. The Davies brothers are a couple of brilliant and adorable humanists.

TheSchuurmanchannel : The Kinks were certainly a great band but NO ONE was more creative than The Beatles.
Its okay. As long as pioneers of hard rock, heavy metal and punk allude to them as their original inspirations and influence. The listening public do not have to know.
They got banned from the US for a number of years, part of the reason for their lack of broader influence.

At the end Davies says: "You're good, you're very good." High praise from a legend my man, and he's right.

Dave, Ray, Pete and Mick were an incredible band! "Village Green Preservation Society" is one of the greatest albums, ever recorded! EVER!
