“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and composed the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version.
She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet during his own Paris concert in January 1995. It was a triumph. So he sat in a front row seat and asked her to sing it again alone.
Lara also had made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power. Serge and Lara became good friends and performed several other duets later on.
The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal)
    ua-cam.com/video/eHSyk4SGtuY/v-deo.html
is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.
Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance the En Toute Intimité, 2003, Paris Olympia version is even more dramatic

Lara Fabian is an international superstar who wrote 200+ songs in 4 languages and sang in 13.
Here this was a cover but as always she delivered the best version of it.
She has been covered by the greatests from Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey and Josh Groban to Dimash (several times, he is her absolute fan), Diana Ankudinova, Morissette Amon, Floor Jansen, Gabriel Henrique, Cakra Khan, Forestella, …
She is known as the queen of resonance or "The Ring" and the best emotional performer on stage.
And she has sung ballads, opera, rock opera, pop dance (she was #1 in US club dance charts during 58 weeks).
I will post separate comments with more details about her, this song, as well as a recommended playlist.

Being 20+ years his senior, the great Dimash Qudaibergen began his crush on her when he was around 11.
While we have seen video of them meeting for the first time and singing together for the first time, he has managed to
"carry a torch" for her but not in an obsessive way. I think we can look at his accomplishments and see that crush
has not controlled him. Indeed, Dimash has taken what he has learned from Lara, Placido Domingo, Michael Jackson and many others and propelled his career forward.
Lara is a Polyglot, speaking many languages. In real life, she has been married since 2012 but there were other relationships before that.
Her rendition of Caruso is beautiful and in my opinion, her best work.

Caruso is NOT a song written for opera singers, it's a song dedicated to a great opera singer, Enrico Caruso, and his love story born in Sorrento. The author is Lucio Dalla ( one of the best italian singer-songwriter )and he sang this song almost speaking, as he used to do, and he was amazing! Later the song was also sung by many opera singers, including Pavarotti. I raccommend everyone to listen to Lucio Dalla's original version 😊

I'm happy to have introduced you to this great author and singer, who had his own unique style and was a poet. He said he was on his boat in the Gulf of Sorrento when the engine broke down. Then he went to stay in a hotel with a terrace overlooking the gulf, where Caruso had also stayed, and there the owner told him this story about the famous opera singer, which Dalla decided to turn into a song. This is how this masterpiece was born.

I absolutely fell in love… whole heartedly. At year two after our engagement, he chose to cheat and continue a relationship with the other person the entire time we were together. It took me years to get passed my relationship. I had to de tangle the roots that started to create the foundation of what I thought was a healthy relationship. Certain songs, movies, physical things we did together constantly reminded me of him. Then the occasional call I would get from him after he had moved on, just to tell me how much he missed my cooking or my touch, didn’t help my emotional roller coaster that I so hard was trying to rid myself of. I eventually did release myself from the grips of this toxic connection.

I agree that people must learn to move on after a relationship, and it definitely helps over a period of time. However sometimes the emotional impact can be so overwhelming that it can even affect someone mentally even after a number of years. It's a battle between the heart and the mind and unless you've gone through it yourself, you can never fully understand it.

Thanks for reacting to one of the best individual covers you'll ever see. Lara has magnificent vocals and is so very expressive and authentic. This song is well worth a strong analysis - which you gave.
However, an equally good cover of this song is Forestella's. A huge challenge to convey desperate despair through four totally different singers - all of great quality. Then there's the harmonies, which Lara does not have access to.

  • @anniebygrave9300
    @anniebygrave9300 3 місяці тому +6

Thank you for your reaction. I could see that you did have an emotional reaction to the song. I think anyone who doesn't emotionally react to such an agonised rendition of this song might be living in their logical brain rather too much. It is so important to be able to have empathy, to feel emotions and be touched by others. How otherwise can we be loving, caring, sympathetic human beings if we cannot feel at least some of the pain others are going through?
I think you have both taken the song the wrong way in one important point. The lyrics are in the present tense all the way through. There is no past tense used. Even the line 'it has been 2 years' is in the present perfect continuous tense. This shows that the person is STILL in the relationship, that the other person is STILL coming to them whenever they want to for s*x and leaving again, that this has already been going on for 2 years and it is still happening right now. If you read the lyrics carefully this is exactly what is says. It's not that the affair happened 2 years ago and finished and they can't get over it. That's not it at all. They are suffering because it's happening right now and they haven't or can't put a stop to it.
So the message to your kids (or to anyone really) is do not ever put up with this kind of treatment. Put your foot down and end it for your own sake. You are not living your life to be abused like this. No more feeling like the victim. Rise up into your power and show the other one the door. Only then can you heal.
The song was written by a married man (Serge Lama) about his relationship with a married woman (Michèle Potier). They met again years later when they were both free, had a baby together and got married. They stayed together for the rest of Michèle's life (she passed in 2016).
Lara Fabian is such a superb performer. She is like a method actor - she becomes the person in the song. This is her special talent. If you had watched more carefully at the end and waited just a minute for the video to fully end after the song was over you would have seen her trembling, shaking her head, forcing herself to come back to the room and leave that painful emotion behind her. Her audience loves her for the way she puts everything out there.
I would highly recommend the 2001 Paris version of Je T'Aime where something surprising happens. ua-cam.com/video/IYnFwUbC9A8/v-deo.htmlsi=WHJb2xiDG5yTTPi_
I won't spoil the surprise by telling you what it is. But if you do react to it, don't turn off the video at the end. Let it run right to the finish.

This song is not about a past relationship but about a woman whose partner/lover/husband, who still lives with her, no longer pays attention to her and continues to live his own life outside the couple. In fact, it is the resentment of a woman who has been lovingly abandoned for two years.

It is indeed about toxicity of a now one-way relationship rather than about grief, although there’s certainly a layer of grief for their forgone love and happiness. Her partner comes and goes as he pleases without even noticing her, she “clings to” him and to the memory of their love (“like to a sin”). The main point is that he’s still around, and that’s what is literally killing her. She just can’t even grieve.

One performance she did while suffering of 2 broken vertebrae, being sedated and wearing a metallic corset. If you didn’t know, you wouldn’t notice it.
This is her iconic song "Je t’aime", a french classic she wrote, that also became very popular in Russia. This was performed in Royal Albert Hall, London, in 2011, for the birthday event of Mikhail Gorbatchev (the song was the favorite of his late spouse).

👉 Lara Fabian, *1970, is a world famous Belgian-Canadian singer, songwriter, musician, actress and producer. She is Belgian but also has Italian roots (her mother is from Sicily). She grew up in both countries and therefore speaks both French and Italian as her mother tongue. She was classically trained in singing, piano and song composition for 10 years (from 8 to 18) at the Brussels Royal Conservatory.
To this day she has singing lessons and trains several times a week. She started her career in Canada in the early 1990s. She now lives in Montreal and also has Canadian citizenship. She is fluent in 4 languages (French, Italian, English, Spanish) and has sung in a total of 12 languages. She has sold over 20 million records worldwide as of September 2017 and is one of the best-selling Belgian artists of all time.
In 2000, Lara launched her triumphal procession in the US, but a falling out with Sony over her artistic direction and the will of Celine Dion's management to block her path to the US thwarted that plan.
She therefore focused on Europe again and had great success there, expanding her reach to Eastern Europe and Asia where she became an absolute superstar through her many years of collaboration with Igor Krutoy. She's also a star in Brazilia.
Many of their songs are now classics and are covered by other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban...
The US is now rediscovering her through her covers of Lara Fabian songs.
She is Dimash's idol. He has covered some of her songs. She also wrote the lyrics to his song 'Your Love' and they finally met at Igor Krutoy's birthday party and sang Ti Amo Cosi (composed by Igor Krutoy) together with Aida Garafulina: Ti Amo Cosi - ua-cam.com/video/XaQFfqC3lnU/v-deo.html

Let's not overanalyze the song and talk about the genius of the best vocalist of our generation. Lara is the Queen of Resonance and vowel coordination. She is The Ring, the perfect singer. Enough said. I'm not interested in hearing your opinion on how relationships should or shouldn't be. I'm not here for that.

Sorry guys, but you got it wrong ! The relationship did not ended 2 years ago, it started 2 years ago ! She sings "Et je suis comme un oiseau mort, quand toi tu dors" i.e "when you are sleeping". There are still together, but he treats her like a given. The song is in french and it is also a bit hit from the 70s (when it was sung by a man, Serge Lama), so I've known this song since I was a kid.

Breaking free from codependent or abusive relationships is more difficult than healing from alcoholism or heroin addiction especially if you have no support system which in this song she mentions her mother used to leave her alone (abandon her) every night so we can tell that she already had childhood trauma and was drawn to a similar dynamics in her adult relationships. Its not a typical breakup story imo.

So moral majority in this. Love is love, passion can destroy, . If your have been addicted once to someone, you know what she means. And you can leave a long wedding without any feeling of loss because it i was long and boiring enough. Any case is different, so don't compare.

I don't know why so many people interprete this song as a lost relationship when it's actually about an abusive, or at least uncaring relationship. 'Ca fait deux ans que tu t'en fout' implies that the relationship is still going on but one of the partners hasn't been caring in the last two years. it doesn't mean that the relationship has ended two years ago.

I think this relationship is not a modern type of relationship. In which we are like drive through dating…we break up so easily and move on too quickly. I think in the past, relationship moved slower…in their time of development and of course in its possible dissolution .

It may have been implied in your analyses but the despair, felt by the abandoned child when the mother went out at night, was not discussed as a problem for the way she feels since the 2 year separation happened. For instance, why her abandonment response is so severe.

I agree that you are discussing an adequate response to the breakup of a relationship. But do you actually see a lot of healthy people?) For example, I was able to fall in love only once.
And, yes, the loss of this person has affected my whole life in a way that other relationships have never given strength.
Respect and affection do not give such loyalty as love.

Disappointing that your full comment is about the possible meaning of the story and consequential feelings but nothing much about the singing performance and the artist stage presence.

You are being a bit hard on the Doctor’s. You can put a 400 pound women on a stage that farts to the stage to Yankee Doodle Dandy. That Great Big Woman had Stage Presence like none other, her farts were perfectly in tune & on time captivating the audience as the stench grew & grew. Not 1 person left with every door locked. The show climaxes when her last fart turned into loose shit running down her legs. Just Wow! When the doors unlocked people ran quickly for the exits stunned by her performance & her huge stage presence. Even today I look for a exit when another farts, I only hear the 400 pound female artist & the aura with which lingers still today. Perhaps you should start a reaction channel of your own. That way you could express your reaction freely & educate others. I would subscribe to your channel for fun! Have you ever thought about doing so?
