Tom Waits is a pure genius in his use of words and music. I've been to many of his shows and never heard him play song the same way as before. He's like Dylan in that he is constantly reinventing himself and his words and music (sounds?). I first listened to him in 1967 and believe he is better today than he was when he was younger. If you ever get a chance go and see him. You won't regret it.
Many years after originally seeing this tribute video, yet I'm still compelled to watch it again and again. There's just something about it that draws me in. And that guitar solo from 3:10 to 3:55 is sublime.
okay, i got a problem i have learned every tom waits song on guitar, and just when im done i find a lost dusty gem of one like this! you can never run out of Waits songs to do!

No, a ringtone was an opportunity to share with people Tom Waits... even if it's just that tiny little bit. His music is something you usually don't discover unless someone shares it with you.
i love the picture from the shining in the bathroom. lord knows i love to wake up and see Jonny the psycho killer greeting me with a GOOD MORNING!!!! kudos to you great job
Good. Lets keep Tom to ourselves. He is the worlds best kept secret!! Who wants 'braindead turds' disrespecting our Tom anyway with their shallow thinking!
Waits works for ya or he don't. Ain't no rhyme and reason for it. My favorite artist of all time. Kinda like Joanna Newsome either you love her or hate her.
@LandoftheShanks find Cold Feet, a great oddball movie that Waits is in..it's his biggest role ever...well, close in size to his role in Dr. Parnassus...anyway, jsut get it..on DVD..cheap, classic, nuts...made in the 1980's... Now.
I do like Tom's multiple singing personalities. HOWEVER.... Several months back I switched on a goofy morning radio program, and I heard what I THOUGHT was a new Tom Waits song, but turned out it was a bit that the shockjocks (Opie/Anthony) were doing by getting an actual homeless guy into the studio to sing impromptu songs. The homeless guy's song seemed more authentic and better somehow. Since that experience, I've not really dug Tom Waits as much.
raind dogs is the best one I think but Mule Variations is among the many "second ones" (along with Swordishtrombones, Blood Money, The Black Rider etc.). this song is great, btw.
How can anyone not laugh at this video are they drunk or what? I loved the Jack Nicholson on the wall, so I'm going to watch this again, and yes, don't argue it takes the fun away...
@karl198 could be. Tom could do it of course, but: Mule Variations track listing: 6. 'Cold Water' 5:23; Musicians: Marc Ribot - Guitar Solo (6, 9). check it on wikipedia > Mule Variations. both masters! love Waits, love Ribot.
that was in response to BrotherAngstrom by the way, see I cling to this ideal that Tom Waits fans are mature peolpe who respect different opinions, (but msneverquit's just a troll who needs no attention beyond this). BRING ON THE THUMBS DOWNS!
This reminds me of a place I used to live, "The Warren House" I nicknamed it "The Wanted House" because of all the shady characters walking the concentration camp halls. It's too bad Section 8 housing gravitates to this low life existence which is an adventure for a few minuted but for some a life sentence. Too many wind up down there because of themselves so the victim theme portrayed a bit here is not entirely accurate unless it's the one just looking to save a few bucks. In that case any time you get a few bucks get out or someone will try to get your bucks from you. It's a fine line living on the edge romanticizing it and simply failing to find whatever it is you sank low to find out. If you lucky you can package it and sell it for a few bucks for yourself - if you don't die from the starvation.
It's makes me sad that even a great Waits song cannot escape being made into a stupid ringtone... it's like taking the heart out of it or something... difficult to explain, but it's wrong.
It took you this long to figure that out? The media has a grip on our minds; idiotic, impressionable teenagers being bombarded by either the latest ads or news isn't helping matters much, just making them dumber. That's how abominations like the J-14 magazine and Twilight propagate, and bands like The Jonas Brothers and their ilk. I'm content to be on the fringes with actual music.

I don't understand people who criticize Tom Waits but like Howlin' Wolf. They both had soulful growls.
The vid to this great song... just amazing!!! Best!
My favorite Tom Waits song.
Many years after originally seeing this tribute video, yet I'm still compelled to watch it again and again. There's just something about it that draws me in. And that guitar solo from 3:10 to 3:55 is sublime.
Wonderful song and video. Just awesome. I am thoroughly awed :)
Every time I hear this guy it just gets better. Getitindia.

i have learned every tom waits song on guitar, and just when im done i find a lost dusty gem of one like this!

Hes got the best set of pipes EVER
If Tom Waits were any cooler, he'd be a one man solution to global warming (plus, he's a musical genius).
Very well put together. Waits is a genius.
omg this guy reminds me of my dad...luv this song
Best song by far on Mule Variations.

Nah.. Not even legend can describe him. We need to think up of a more epic word just for him!
Brilliant ;)

very well done - black and white supports the scene
Well I woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold water
Woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold
Police at the station
And they don't look friendly
Well they don't look friendly
Well they don't look friendly
Police at the station
And they don't look friendly
They don't look friendly well
They don't
Blind or crippled
Sharp or dull
I'm reading the Bible
By a 40 watt bulb
What price freedom
Dirt is my rug
Well I sleep like a baby
With the snakes and the bugs
Well the stores are open
But I ain't got no money
I ain't got no money
Stores are open but I
Ain't got no money
Ain't got no money
Well I ain't
Found an old dog
And he seems to like me
Seems to like me
Well he seems to like me
Found an old dog and he
Seems to like me
Seems to like me
Well he seems
Seen them fellows
With the card board signs
Scrapin up a little money
To buy a bottle of wine
Pregnant women and
The Vietnam vets I say
Beggin on the freeway
Bout as hard as it gets
Well I slept in the graveyard
It was cool and still
Cool and still
It was cool and still
Slept in the graveyard
It was cool and still
Cool and still and it
Was cool
Slept all night in the Cedar grove
I was born to ramble
Born to rove
Some men are searchin for the
Holy Grail
But there ain't nothin sweeter
Than ridin the rails
I look 47 but I'm 24
Well they shooed me away
From here the time before
Turned there their backs
And they locked their doors
I'm watchin T.V. in
The window of a furniture store
Well I woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold water
Woke up this morning
With the cold water
With the cold water
With the cold
Hey, I'm a teenager and I like Tom Waits, just saying. I know most people have less unusual tastes than me, though
I just love this song
No, a ringtone was an opportunity to share with people Tom Waits... even if it's just that tiny little bit. His music is something you usually don't discover unless someone shares it with you.

Waits works for ya or he don't. Ain't no rhyme and reason for it. My favorite artist of all time. Kinda like Joanna Newsome either you love her or hate her.

Hey guys, who plays lead guitar here? Sounds like David Hidalgo, but I could be wrong.

Tom is not on the internet, there is not internet, it just a vicious rumor going around, what are you watching is a toaster, at least it is on my end.

remember how i use to laugh my ass off over his stuff
Cocoa Puffs and wine!?! Thats gross! Now beer and Cheerios....that's a different story.
It's makes me sad that even a great Waits song cannot escape being made into a stupid ringtone... it's like taking the heart out of it or something... difficult to explain, but it's wrong.
Haha, I think that'd be great... Might make me like tom's sining even more!
Wine?
True men have Jack Daniels with their cocoa puffs.
Jim Beam can be substituted in a pinch.
Found an old dog and he seems to like me ...
