I also want to tell you I’ve been knitting and crocheting for many many many years. It’s the first time I screwed up on two rows on my block had the pearls where the nets were and so on you know how it goes so instead of ripping the whole thing out and saying.###### I what is it? You call it when I just took the two rows out tink.. whatever that’s why I started watching your channel this afternoon even though I’ve seen it probably 12 times had to reassure myself that I would do this and finish it and not have it as a WIP in three years down the road, but I am so proud of myself in my triple 20s(60’s) it’s the first time for an Afghan that I am following the pattern not the written part the pattern so again big thanks from Canada once again you are the best🇨🇦🥰🙃☺️
Hi Jana, I knitted my swatch yesterday (Thursday) and now that after washing it and thoroughly allowing it to dry (laying flat near the wood stove) Finally Im casting on 60 stitchers!!!!! Having ordered my yarn late I am now planning on making two of these lovely afghans - Yahooo 🎉 Thank you for making this KAL something for us all to look forward to!!!!
Hi Jana, while knitting on my actual block, I’m sitting watching you with block one talking to Allison just wanna say I think you should go to work for Barraco because I have never seen two people talk and you know more than the person that is the guest way way way more? I’m so enjoying the banter and I love the look on your face. It is just making my afternoon. I just had to say that Nothing against Allison. I think she’s just so cute but you are hilarious. You’re cracking me right up. thank you for this and by the way, the block is going great. I will post later your Canadian friend.🇨🇦😉👏🏼
Thank you so much for this tutorial I learned so many things that I did not know before I have never counted my stitches. The way you have with the ruler I have been one of those people to use other things. lol, but I’ve never blocked my pattern before counting makes so much sense when you watch it thank you for opening my eyes .
I just ordered my yarn and am so grateful you are doing these beginner friendly videos! I use to knit when my daughter was young so about 30 years ago 😊 I was self taught and I’m sure learned bad habits so having a step by step will really help!
Although I am a subscriber, I'm late to the party. Clicked your video and decided I needed to join this KAL. Since 2025 is a low buy year for me and I have yarn SABLE, I'm going to use what I have in the house. Still excited to to join you!
Thank you for adding what my question was gonna be. Did you possibly have the pattern for your beautiful wrap/Shawl‼️ Also you and I are hanging out as I’m following you to learn how to make socks toe up new to me. I thank you for that as well. I’m sure saying that we’re gonna hang out in the next year. We’ll speak again thank you for all your wonderful tutorials you are a pretty awesome lady. I am so glad we have met.👏🏼🇨🇦
Not necessarily. I may not swatch for subsequent blocks if the gauge is the same as this one. So it's important to keep good notes. I will swatch again for the second January block though, since it's gauge is different. Hope that helps!
Hi Jana! Thanks for the helpful video. You mentioned using carbon fiber needles when you usually use Chiaogoos (I’m presuming the metal ones?). Why Karbonz for this project? I hear great things about both types and am trying to decide between the two.
Thank you for doing these videos! I knitted my swatch using Berroco Ultra Wool instead of their Vintage yarn, and I ended up with 17 stitches per 4 inches instead of the 20 stitches. So I'm going to reswatch with a smaller needle. I would like to reuse the yarn from my first swatch for the second. Do I need to anything to the yarn to straighten it out so I get an accurate second swatch or is it ok to reuse the yarn as is?
There are certainly varying opinions about this. I prefer to swatch with yarn that hasn’t been knitted before because I think it’s more accurate. So you could knit your second swatch using yarn from the ball and then reuse your first swatch later if you need to
Hi Jana, I made my swatch and blocked it. Got 18 stitches over 4 inches. Should I make another swatch going up one needle size. I used a size 7 needle for my swatch.
If you want to get the same gauge as the pattern, you'll need more stitches per inch, so you'd want to make smaller stitches and go down a needle size. Try a US size 6. If you. like the fabric that you got and don't think it's too airy, then you could go with it, but know that you're yarn requirements will change then also.
Hi jana, I'm a little confused because i always learned that you have to either slip the first or the last stitch of every row because otherwise you would be creating nots, but in the pattern it says to knit both. I dont really know what to do with that
Follow the pattern. If you slip the first stitch, then that elongated stitch will equal 2 rows. That's find for some patterns, but it may be more difficult when we go to seam these together. The designers are wanting you to create a garter stitch selvage edge instead.
I do have a question and I am not sure if I should ask you or the Berroco team. Are the estimated skeins enough to do a swatch for each block? (My apologies if this is a duplicate question. I searched, but didn't see this had been asked duiring the FB live or in the Ravelry thread.)
Potentially? I wouldn't count on it though because it would depend on whether you're making a swatch for every block or not, how large the swatch is and how much yarn you use with your specific tension. I'd keep in mind the possibility that you'll use your swatch.
This link shows the number of 100 gm hanks of Berroco Vintage (each at 218 yds) that are needed for each color. It's the first line item under YARN about 1/3 of the way down the page. berroco.com/patterns/mystery-blanket-knit-along/
Hi coach! I didn’t need another blanket so I opted to make one for charity. Not knowing if the recipient might have wool sensitivities (I do too) I chose to use an acrylic/polymide blend from a big box store. It fit my budget better too. Deviating from the suggested yarn (which is lovely!) means my results may differ along the way but I’ll figure it out. I’m sure Jana will reply but thought I’d weigh in in the meantime 😊
@@LoriNeu19 I love that you called her coach. I was thinking on doing that in my reply and I thought no so I’m glad you did. I’m sure we will run into one another again in class a fellow student from🇨🇦(Alberta)

Thank you Jana for this new Year KAL🙏💗
Love your podcast🙏
The pattern has a garter stitch edge. Is it okay to change it to stockinette edge stitches for mattress stitch seaming?

Because my other needles are occupied at the moment!! Too many WIPS 🤣

I might have missed it but is there a reason you did not check your row gauge? These are supposed to be square when complete.
I didn't worry about it too much since the pattern says to repeat rows 1-8 until the piece measures 12" ending after completing a wrong side row.
Thank you Jana.

Why do you pin it down? Shouldn’t it just dry in a natural state?
I want to make sure that the piece is pinned to the 12” square dimension so it will match all the other blocks
Jana I looked at the Berroco page it does not tell how much yarn we need total do you know those specifications thanks?!

Hi do you have to use same yarn. Wool is not something my skin likes.

You can use any worsted weight yarn that will give you the same gauge.
Be aware that cotton will stretch though, and not the same "memory" as wool.
