    Foreigners need to understand that most of us Spaniards don't really take a siesta except for during the holidays, specially during summer holidays, everything is closed from 2pm to 5pm because we eat at home. So we need time to get home, make lunch, eat lunch (in our culture lunch is the main meal that you have with your family, so its atleast 1h. to 1h.30min. long), clearing up the table and tidying up the kitchen and getting back to work. 2pm to 5pm for all that is actually quite tight, 3h when you spend atleast 1 just eating isn't that much when you factor in cooking and traveling around town. There's no time for siesta, it's mostly foreigners that take siestas thinking it's super normal and common. Also, there's nothing that Spanish about a siesta, siesta is just Spanish for nap, all cultures nap here and there.

      Agree. I lived in Madrid and we never took siestas.

      I Mexican, I take naps, but usually great part of the grown population doesn't do it. It's something more popular between the young's, the grows see it as a lose or time and being unproductive, at least here.

    2:26 In France we also close small shops at noon to eat, but that does not mean that we go to sleep! haha In Germany it is also closed at noon to eat, as in Italy. It has nothing to do with Siesta. It is the hours of the small family business. It is a very typical mistake.
    www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20170609-its-time-to-put-the-tired-spanish-siesta-stereotype-to-bed
    "siesta , elsewhere in Spain it seems the days may be numbered for one of the country’s most enduring stereotypes. The siesta is now as alien to most Spaniards as it is to the foreigners who package it into their image of Spain."
    It is important that you do not constantly repeat the same stereotype. I suppose you don't like that the stereotypes of your country are constantly repeated, right?

    2:30 "Its all close". It is not true. Only small family businesses close. The rest of the Industry, and services is open. In Madrid we have 15 million square meters of offices that DO NOT CLOSE AT NOON. In industries, which is 25% of the country's GDP, they don't close at noon either. In the Tourism sector, they don't close either. Nothing really closes at noon, except small family businesses. You must live more realities so as not to generalize with something so basic.

      @@DarViajar As a constructive critic if you let me, I'd consider fair to elaborate a bit that work break for small businesses is not "well the Spaniards are that way, it is a cultural thing I guess". The explanation is logical: the climate. Temperatures are crippling in summer and part of spring. Except northern Spain, late spring, the whole summer and the beginning of autumn are even dangerous if you are not hydrated and protected against solar radiation. Speaking of radiation, sunlinght is present in Spain until much later than the rest of Europe so if you sum 2+2 you get people make that break to avoid dangerous and uncomfortable temperatures even more considering daylight is available until late in the day. As the comment below points out, Cuenca is (with all due respect) rural Spain. It is like defining life in the United States acording to the experience of living in Wichita. 48,5% of Spainards live in the largest cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Bilbao, A Coruña, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Málaga) so life in Cuenca is pretty much slow and rural to you as it is to a urban Spaniard used to 24/7 way of life.

      Everybody thinks they can teach English! Don't do it! It is badly paid, there are more teachers than pupils and it is just a myth really. Some get lucky, but don't base making a living on it. That way lies trouble. Also your degree will probably not be recognised here, unless you are a Qualified teacher already. In all honesty, Yes, you probably will end up washing up. IF you are lucky. If you are going to Need to work I would get a job First! You will need to get a load of red tape to work legally too. If you have a decent job with a good employer they may do all that for you. Honestly not much on the standard lenguage. Thank to rule the homogeneous grammar and structure since 1492. Other way it's the slang and the fast accents as costeño on Mexico or andaluz on Spain with a a silent ending s, and chopping and shorting the words.

    • @hogwashmcturnip8930
      @hogwashmcturnip8930 Рік тому +3

      There is a Whole load of difference in Spanish language .I have never been to Mexico, but I am sure it is the same there. Basque and Catalan were mentioned, but then get we down to Regional variations. Valenciano is almost intelligible to outsiders as it is a form of Catalan. Mallorquin is another variant. Andaluz is different to Extremeño, which in some places is almost Portuguese. He seems a nice bloke, but like most Americans he has lived somewhere for 5 minutes and knows it all. You Never know it all, especially in Spain. And never claim to be fluent! You will be in for a total shock I know people who claim they 'get by, but can barely order a coffee. Spaniards in my current town tell me I am good, which is odd because in the last place I lived they told me I was rubbish! It is all relative.
      He has the right idea, but he hasn't even got past the nursery slopes yet.
      My advice would be read every book, watch every vlog, every language course you can, and then totally Ignore them! The whole joy of Spain is it is a little surreal. If you expect it to fit Your rules and perceptions you will Fail. If you come with an open heart and mind and a willingness to learn, you will be welcomed. One of the biggest compliments I ever got was when someone who had lived in the UK and been married to an English person, turned to me and said 'Are you Sure you are English? You are nothing like them! You think like Us!' Home at last!

    • @richiandino8187

      Only slangs change. But they are literally the same, also the accents. But people will understand everything you say. Now if you use latin american slang like speaking like salvadorans. Then yeah, they will have a hard time. I write books and i am fed up with people trying to say that spanish and castillan are two different languages. They are not.

    • @hogwashmcturnip8930
      @hogwashmcturnip8930 11 місяців тому

      @@euskoferre Spanish and Mexican are different. As a Non native speaker I was always made aware of that. Also my point was that Castilian is Not the natural language of Spain. Anymore than RP is what the average English person speaks. Each region has its own variant and some are easier than others. A Spanish person will know Exactly where you come from, or where you learned, by how you use Castilian. Some regions speak mixtures that are well away from ' Received Castilian' Extremeno is nearer to Portuguese and Valenciano is nearer Catalan. They are both ostensibly Spanish. My point in mentioning Catalan is try speaking 'Spanish' around there and you will get short shrift. Better to speak French. So, I think my point is, don't think that because you speak Hispano Spanish or school Castilian it will be instantly recognised or welcomed.

The legacy is not as visible in Spain as in the US since most of this was happening in the colonies, but it's certainly the case that Spain engaged in the practice.

You got the reconquista completely wrong. 700 years didn't pass since the catholics ruled over the peninsula. 700 years passed since the 1st moors stepped on the peninsula until the last moors stepped off, and the moors didn't take the whole peninsula instantly, it was 700 years of them conquering due north and then the Christian kingdoms reconquering due south. So it is a reconquista without a doubt. You completely fell into Spanish leftwing wokeness right there.

      I agree that it was Reconquista, but how much good did it do Spain.?

    I love Spain, but hate the siesta. It's a pain in the ass because you can't get anything done. For example, most financial institutions close at 1...for the day. So, it should not come as any surprise that Spain consistently ranks low on world productivity and GDP. I do realize that money is not the measure of everything, but, it's a bit ridiculous...and it accounts for the average salary in major cities to hover around 1,400 euros a month. Typical retail stores open somewhere between 10-11AM, then close at 1:30 and MAYBE reopen at 4 or 5 or just never re-open. Why bother opening a business? Also, you see lots of restaurants that don't open until 8:00 pm and it's very common to see the owners or employees turning people away at 7 pm. One place I decided to observe turned away at least 10 tables. All those potential customers spent their money elsewhere. I guess the mentality of most business owners is to just get by. The businesses that stay open do a thriving business.

      As a Spaniard I couldn't agree more with you, and I as well hate the siesta, as you said, it makes Spain lose productivity. Now, I honestly don't think people in major cities make around 1400 euro a month, I'm personally from a very small town and that salary would be considered very low, close to the minimal salary. Not sure how it is in big cities, but I honestly don't think it is around 1400.

My American pc, 'corrects' my UK spelling and I have to go back and correct It. Then we have this 'Math' thing. What is that about?Suddenly the Maths we have all been using for thousands of years is insufficient, so we now have a situation where a simple sum like 2+ 3 x15 -4 has 6 different answers! depending on what 'system' you use. I Wish we had that flexibility when I was at school! Instead of just getting things Wrong.
