    it depends on how formal u speak and how much u want to express. if u try to speak like an essay with all complete and grammatically correct sentences and rigorous logical reasoning and full detailed explanations, of course it sounds more complicated. but in real life everyone speaks in a more concise and informal way and we dont always need to explain why we make a certain choice. while u can say "can lah" in singlish when ordering a meal, we can simply say "yup" in english instead of doing a ton of nonsense compliment for the food to show we want to eat it.

    • @KENN_LHS

      Anmin Kang I agree. This vid is just exaggerating how English is supposed to be spoken

  • @lemakeup13
    @lemakeup13 7 років тому +15

    it's true haha. I like Singlish but as a foreigner I find it's a bit difficult for foreigners because they mix up the english with malay and many dialects of chinese. let's say in a sentence they can use hokkien with english but in another words they will mix it with teocheow or mandarin or cantonese or even malay. the participle they use to end a sentence even uncanny for some people. maybe some neigbouring tourists from malay and indo can understand about the term of -lah and whatever but they even cannot fully understand the whole singlish.

    • @bruhgangsta3205
      @bruhgangsta3205 7 років тому

      lemakeup13 but the main thing is we do mix up all languages and it became singlish :)

    • @skeletons5674

      It's ok to find Singlish confusing at first. Honestly speaking, it's not really something that can be learnt in a class or textbook. Only real life interaction and time can truly 'teach' someone Singlish.

    Saw a cartoon recently. You can use 4 languages locally in one sentence in Singapore.
    Caption :
    Annek, kopi o dua, kosong , tar pow, please.
    (Indian, malay, chinese, english)
    Means: brother, 2 coffee without sugar, take away, please.

    Singlish is very unique with combination of Old British and America English blended with Hokkien, Cantonese and Malay accent. Singlish is consider a languages widely used by Singaporean, PR and foreign workers. Singlish should be officially register as new language unique in Asia.

    and tank?you mean tanking right?like waiting to strike,more for gaming?where got such wrd...
    could use pon tang(skip class/work) or ton(staying up late/overnight to chill with frds)
    Also,singlish isnt jus certain words/vocab.sentence structure and accent also play a role...

    what's the meaning of "liao"? I'm korean and lived in sg for a half year only so still dunno :L

    • @hongyisim1917
      @hongyisim1917 8 років тому +5

      Think of 'liao' as already. E.g. "Eh you full already?" "I full liao" - Same as "I full already". "Watch this movie already?" "Watch liao" - "Watch already". You get the drift.

    • @RonLarhz
      @RonLarhz 8 років тому +5

      liao is from chinese word.means (something) is already done.
      example : eat liao/do homework liao/sleep liao
      double empahsis example : eat finish liao/shop finish liao/finish nagging liao or not

    • @epicinferno6703
      @epicinferno6703 3 місяці тому

      Liao is a different way of saying the character in Chinese that makes the past tense, 'Le'. 了. Liao is used for emphasis to really emphasise that something is indeed over. For example, 'I finish eat liao.' This means that the speaker has indeed finished eating and wants you to really understand that he has already finished eating.
